Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction I compiled the information in this book to explain why the Heisman Memorial Trophy Award was created. This book is a must for football fans. I also added The Life of Jim Thorpe, who reportedly began his Athletic career at Carlisle in 1907 when he walked past the track and beat all the school's High Jumpers with an impromptu 5-ft 9-in Jump still in Street clothes. His earliest recorded Track and Field results come from 1907. He also competed in football, baseball, lacrosse and even ballroom dancing, winning the 1912 Intercollegiate Ballroom Dancing Championship. The Heisman Trophy is Awarded annually to the player deemed the most outstanding player in Collegiate football. It was created in 1935 as the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy and renamed in 1936 following the death of the Club's Athletic Director, John Heisman (former Brown University and University of Pennsylvania player; head football Coach at Oberlin College, Auburn University, Clemson University, Rice University, and the University of Pennsylvania; and football, basketball, and baseball head Coach and Athletic Director at Georgia Tech). The Award is presented by the Heisman Trophy Trust in early December before the postseason Bowl Games. It is the oldest of several overall Awards in college football, including the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and the AP Player of the Year. The Heisman and the AP Player of the Year are the only Awards to honor the most outstanding player, while the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award recognize the best player, and the Archie Griffin Award recognizes the most valuable player. All football players in all divisions of college football are eligible for the Award, though winners usually represent Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools. There are three categories of persons eligible to vote for the Award winner: Sports Journalists Previous Heisman winners Fans the survey collected by ESPN.com constitutes one Heisman vote. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s nothing quite as controversial in American sports as college football’s national championship, making it common fodder for talk around the water cooler as well as loftier debates among professional journalists in the sports pages. Walsh takes a comprehensive view of over a century of controversy, breaking teams down into one of three categories: perennial powers, contenders, and former greats. He then reviews the ten most controversial championships, suggests candidates for the best overall football program, and concludes with some thoughts on the future of the BCS. A comprehensive appendix lists national champions since 1869; AP and USA Today/UPI final polls; final BCS standings; first-team All-Americans; and College Football Hall of Fame inductees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When coach Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa in 2007, he boldly proclaimed &“We want to be a champion in everything that we do.&” Since that time, Alabama has won three national championships and become the nation's number one destination for recruits and the top source of NFL talent while simultaneously graduating its players. No other program has won more games, captured more awards, or come close to approaching the kind of consistent success as the Crimson Tide. In Nick Saban vs. College Football, author Christopher Walsh not only explains what separates Saban from his peers and compares his accomplishments to some of the all-time legends, but tells why, if there were a Mount Rushmore of college football coaches, Saban's face would already be on it. From his upbringing in West Virginia to his relationship with legendary coach Bill Belichick, &“the process&” has not only led to Saban having a statue along Alabama's &“Walk of Champions&” in front of Bryant-Denny Stadium, but the establishment of a new standard that may be unparalleled in college football history.

Book excerpt: The first authorized and definitive biography of the man behind the most famous individual award in sports, including never-before-published photos and correspondence. No other football trophy captures the country’s imagination like the Heisman does. Each September, as the college football season begins, every player has the same singular aspiration—to hold aloft the Heisman Trophy in New York come December. Yet very little is known about John W. Heisman, the man the Downtown Athletic Club of New York honored in 1936 when it named its national player of the year award for him. In this richly illustrated official biography, the legendary coach’s great-nephew joins with New York Times bestselling author Mark Schlabach to reveal the real story behind the iconic image. Drawing on thousands of pages of personal documents, writings, playbooks, and correspondence with some of college football’s most famous coaches, the authors chronicle Heisman’s life from a young boy growing up on the oil fields of northwest Pennsylvania to one of football’s most innovative and successful coaches. For football fans, this is a fascinating and insightful look at the man linked forever with one of sport’s most enduring symbols.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides unique insight into how American colleges and universities have been significantly impacted and shaped by college football, and considers how U.S. sports culture more generally has intersected with broader institutional and educational issues. By documenting events from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries including protests, legal battles, and policy reforms which were centred around college sports, this distinctive volume illustrates how football has catalyzed broader controversies and progress relating to race and diversity, commercialization, corruption, and reform in higher education. Relying foremost on primary archival material, chapters illustrate the continued cultural, social, and economic themes and impacts of college athletics on U.S. higher education and campus life today. This text will benefit researchers, graduate students, and academics in the fields of higher education, as well as the history of education and sport more broadly. Those interested in the sociology of education and the politics of sport will also enjoy this volume.

Book excerpt: Very few college football coaches earn the distinction of becoming their programs' winningest, but Gary Pinkel has done it twice. From his nine-year tenure at the University of Toledo to his career at the University of Missouri from 2001 to 2015, Pinkel has shown he has the talent and meddle to take his teams to the top. These remarkable achievements have been met by challenges along the way in Pinkel's personal and professional life, including a DUI and a divorce, a threatened team boycott at Mizzou which dominated national news headlines, and ultimately, a decision to step away from it all following a diagnosis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. In The 100-Yard Journey, Pinkel offers a glimpse into the mind of a winner as well as an honest reflection on meeting and overcoming the unexpected. Follow along from the start of Pinkel's coaching career at Kent State, the same program for which he played as a tight end, through stops at Washington and Toledo, and finally, taking over at the helm of Missouri, a program he guided to 10 bowl games in 15 years, a No. 1 AP ranking at the end of the 2007 season, and SEC Coach of the Year honors in 2014. Whether you're a Tigers fan or just interested in what makes a successful head coach tick, anyone can find something to relate to in Pinkel's personal memoirs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black college football began during the nadir of African American life after the Civil War. The first game occurred in 1892, a little less than four years before the Supreme Court ruled segregation legal in Plessy v. Ferguson. In spite of Jim Crow segregation, Black colleges produced some of the best football programs in the country. They mentored young men who became teachers, preachers, lawyers, and doctors--not to mention many other professions--and transformed Black communities. But when higher education was integrated, the programs faced existential challenges as predominately white institutions steadily set about recruiting their student athletes and hiring their coaches. Blood, Sweat, and Tears explores the legacy of Black college football, with Florida A&M's Jake Gaither as its central character, one of the most successful coaches in its history. A paradoxical figure, Gaither led one of the most respected Black college football programs, yet many questioned his loyalties during the height of the civil rights movement. Among the first broad-based histories of Black college athletics, Derrick E. White's sweeping story complicates the heroic narrative of integration and grapples with the complexities and contradictions of one of the most important sources of Black pride in the twentieth century.
