Book excerpt: From Saturday Night Fever to Jersey Shore, Italian American youth in New York City have appropriated—and been appropriated by—popular American culture. Here, Donald Tricarico investigates how Italian ethnicity has been used to fashion Guido as a distinct youth style that signals inclusion in popular American culture and, simultaneously, the making of a new ethnic subject. Emerging from a wave of Italian immigration after World War II in outer borough neighborhoods such as Bensonhurst, the story of the Guido is an Italian American story, symbolizing the negotiation of a negatively privileged ethnicity within American society. Tricarico takes up questions about the definition of Guido, the role of disco, and the identity politics of Jersey Shore in order to reconsider the significance of Guido for the study of Italian American ethnicity.

This book contains a selection of hitherto unpublished photographs that Guidi took between 1984 and 1989, using a Deardorff 8X10. This was the first time he had used a large format camera for a whole project, which concentrated on an area in the central Veneto, an area known for having rapidly turned into a deeply uncertain, marginal landscape, one intimately hierarchy-free. The places he visited, in the provinces of Treviso, Vicenza, Padua and Venice, seem to be almost part of the same drawing, of the same place, bearing stark testimony to the process of change that has led to the transformation of a huge rural area, driving it into a form of fragmentation known as urban spread. By amazing coincidence he met my wife with in the first month in San Francisco and she was also an expatriate from Brooklyn. His first job was in carpentry then buying and selling refurbished houses then started an Electrical contracting business in San Francisco. He moved on to hard wiring computer systems for telecommunications company in northern and central California until his retirement. He and his wife have two children a boy and a girl and two grandchildren. Guido was born in Florence in Tuscany but under the worst circumstances he was abandoned to the street as an urchin who has a telltale six fingers on his left hand. This will dog him the rest of his life. He is rescued by the Sisters of Clare and is taken to a doctor and his wife. He was home schooled by the doctors wife who was a linguist. He quickly accelerated his studies and was considered a genius at a very young age. Consequently he was fluent in reading and writing in all the romance languages. He was accepted into the University of Bologna the age of sixteen where he excelled in translating the ancient languages of Greek Latin and Hebrew. He finished his studies before his eighteenth birthday and returned to Florence. He was duped into following a man to Spain that he has unintentionally offended this starts his trek through Spain being pursued by the inquisition which eventually leads him the London where he begins his startling career.

At the end of his life and in the first two decades of the twentieth century, Gezellewas hailed by the avant-garde as the founder of modern Flemish poetry. His unique voice was belatedly recognised in the Netherlands and often compared with his English contemporary Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889).
