Book excerpt: Research on the use of composite materials in structural applications started more than 30 years ago but still remains active. The challenges that accompany those applications are diverse and seem to increase as the variety of applications grows. There are several fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems that have been introduced through the years for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Those systems focus on strengthening of slabs, beams and columns. The present study pertains to seismic retrofit of rectangular RC columns. The typical FRP materials used in structural applications are introduced, as well as, how FRP materials become an integral part of the force-resisting system. In addition, analysis work pertaining to a series of strengthened RC columns was conducted and the results were compared to the experimental data. Moreover, deficiencies of typical material models were highlighted. Design guidelines are discussed and recommendations about current design practices are provided. Finally, research gaps and future research recommendations are identified.

On April 20-21, 2021, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the workshop Developing Evaluation Metrics for Sexual Harassment Prevention Efforts. The workshop explored approaches and strategies for evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of sexual harassment interventions being implemented at higher education institutions and research and training sites, in order to assist institutions in transforming promising ideas into evidence-based best practices. Workshop participants also addressed methods, metrics, and measures that could be used to evaluate sexual harassment prevention efforts that lead to change in the organizational climate and culture and/or a change in behavior among community members. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) are increasingly used for seismic retrofit of undamaged bridge columns. The addition of a confining jacket increases overall strength and ductility of the column. However, FRPs can also be used for repair of a damaged bridge column after a seismic event. This research project explores the application of FRPs for retrofit of damaged circular columns. A decision tree for the emergency repair of damaged columns is presented. The decision tree aids field engineers first in assessing the extent of damage to a column from a seismic event, impact or any other source of damage. Once the level of damage is specified, the decision tree can be used to determine the feasibility of FRP retrofitting. If an FRP jacket is a viable option, suggested simplified design guidelines can be used to determine the design thickness and type of required FRP jacket that should be used for the emergency repair of the column. The project included detailed evaluation of existing confining models and a proposition of a new model based on a large database of previously tested specimen columns. Several design equations were also evaluated in order to find the most accurate yet simple approach for the design thickness. The end result is a step-by-step simplified guide for engineers to use in the field for emergency repair of damaged circular bridge columns.

Book excerpt: "This study aims at developing, characterizing and validating an integrated composite confinement system of conventional jackets for: (1) repair and retrofit of existing bridge columns; and (2) construction of new bridge columns, subjected to earthquake excitations. A new composite steel confinement jacket was proposed by combining a thin steel sheet and prestressing strands as a hybrid jacket, incorporating active and passive confining pressure on damaged RC columns. Both experimental and analytical studies were conducted to understand the performance and effectiveness of the proposed repair method. The experimental study involved two 1/2-scale lap-spliced deficient RC bridge columns originally tested to failure under reversed cyclic loading. The proposed jacket was designed and implemented to repair the damaged columns to achieve the required performance level after repair intervention for service and ultimate limit states. Experimental results indicated that both repaired columns exceeded the strength and ductility of their as-built columns. The stiffness of the second column designed for ultimate limit state was completely restored. Analytical studies and collapse analyses on the seismic performance of post-mainshock repaired bridges subjected to mainshock-aftershock sequences demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed technique under severe mainshock-severe aftershock attacks. Another new composite confinement system of a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheet wrapped around a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tube with energy dissipation medium in between was developed for new bridge columns construction. This composite system is essentially a FRP-confined concrete-filled PVC tube, featuring exceptional durability properties of PVC materials in addition to high strength of the FRP fabrics. Experimental tests under uniaxial compression and flexural loading were undertaken to establish the representative stress-strain behavior of confined concrete filled PVC tubes (CCFPT). Experimental studies clearly demonstrated that the CCFPT system outperforms conventional FRP jacket. The intermediate energy dissipation medium is critical to make the post-peak behavior more ductile. Analytical studies were conducted and equations were derived for the prediction of the ultimate strength and strain of a CCFPT system"--Abstract, page iv.
