Book Synopsis Protecting Groundwater for Health by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Protecting Groundwater for Health written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides a structured approach to analyzing hazards to groundwater quality, assessing the risk they may cause for a specific supply, setting priorities in addressing these, and developing management strategies for their control. This book summarizes which pathogens and chemicals are relevant to human health, how they are transported, reduced, removed or retarded; provides practical guidance on characterizing the drinking-water catchment area and assessing potential health hazards; provides guidance on prioritising both hazards and management responses; presents key information on potential management actions and explains their integration into a comprehensive Water Safety Plan from catchment to consumer; and describes policy, land-use planning and implementation of pollution prevention, groundwater, with overviews of specific management approaches applicable to agriculture, sanitation, industry, mining, military sites, waste disposal and traffic.--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply by : National Research Council
Download or read book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, New York City adopted a mammoth watershed agreement to protect its drinking water and avoid filtration of its large upstate surface water supply. Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens. Other recommendations, which are broadly applicable to surface water supplies across the country, target buffer zones, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and effluent trading.

Book Synopsis Security of Water Supply Systems: from Source to Tap by : Jaroslav Pollert
Download or read book Security of Water Supply Systems: from Source to Tap written by Jaroslav Pollert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reality of the post-September 11 situation forces the operators of water supply systems through the world to examine the security and safety of their systems, its vulnerability to intentional interference and sabotage with respect to quantity and quality of potable water. In assessing system vulnerability, there is an urgent need to develop emergency response plans providing ways and means for alternative water supply at the moment of system operation disruption, and system remediation and recovery after the attack. Security of Water Supply Systems: from Source to Tap presents the state-of-the art with a view to the future, conclusions from past experiences are highlighted and future developments are suggested in the field of drinking water safety.
Book Synopsis Groundwater Quality Protection by : Stephen S. D. Foster
Download or read book Groundwater Quality Protection written by Stephen S. D. Foster and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater is an essential natural resource for the economic and secure provision of drinking water supplies. Pollution hazard assessment is an essential part of environmental best practice for water supply utilities, both in terms of protecting groundwater quality from future pollution and mitigating threats posed by existing activities. This book looks at the need for groundwater protection strategies, and provides a technical guide to methodological approaches including: mapping aquifer pollution vulnerability; the delineation of groundwater supply protection areas; developing an inventory of subsurface contaminant load; and the assessment and control of groundwater pollution hazards. The guide is particularly relevant for the Latin American and Caribbean region where many cities are highly dependent upon groundwater resources.

Book Synopsis Groundwater Engineering by : Rajandrea Sethi
Download or read book Groundwater Engineering written by Rajandrea Sethi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook employs a technical and quantitative approach to explain subsurface hydrology and hydrogeology, and to offer a comprehensive overview of groundwater-related topics such as flow in porous media, aquifer characterization, contaminant description and transport, risk assessment, and groundwater remediation. It describes the characterization of subsurface flow of pristine and polluted water and provides readers with easily applicable tools for the design of water supply systems, drinking-water source protection, and remediation interventions. Specific applications range from groundwater exploitation as a drinking water supply to the remediation of contaminated aquifers, from the definition and safeguarding of drinking-water sources to the assessment of human health risks in connection with groundwater contamination events. The book represents an ideal learning resource for upper-undergraduate and graduate students of civil engineering, environmental engineering, and geology, as well as practitioners in the fields of water resource management and environmental protection who are interested in groundwater engineering and technical hydrogeology.
Download or read book Water Sources written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first step in supplying safe drinking water is to ensure the quality of the source water. Every water source is different. Consequently, drinking water professionals must be knowledgeable about the source or sources that are used to provide water to the public. Completely revised and updated, Water sources includes information about the following: water supply hydrology, groundwater sources, emergency and alternative water sources, the use and conservation of water, factors affecting source water quality, water source protection.--From back cover.
