Book excerpt: Life has never been so deadly. Ben Reed’s search for the truth of his identity has hit a snag. The one person who knows anything refuses to talk. When an old enemy of the city of Ashdale emerges, Ben is thrown into the chaos of a violent and lethal danger. Shocked by the cruelty of man, he begins to care more than he thought possible. When visions of old memories impose on him with more force than ever before, he begins to suspect the body he occupies can take no more of his presence. Peter’s familiar and safe world changed the day Ben lost his memory. Now he must face not only the prospect of his friend never coming back but the existence of people with otherworldly abilities as well. Peter must put his doubts aside, or embrace them fully, to aid Ben in his fierce quest to corner the richest man in the city. But as Evy, an elusive and distrustful woman on the run, gets entangled in their mission, Ben and Peter find themselves hunted by people with mystical skills and dangerous employers. While on the run in a scarred and wounded city, Ben and his friends must work together to survive. As Ben can’t contain his increasing powers, the body begins to give in. With the imminent threat, Ben is unsure if dying will send him back to his old existence or somewhere else entirely. Can he even survive death? Grave Intent is the second novel in the Ashdale Reaper Series, a tale of loyalty and friendships, strength, the search for truth, and souls refusing to stay all that dead.

Book excerpt: A seemingly simple murder leads a Newcastle DCI with a criminal past to a dark underworld in this mystery by the author of Open Grave. An eighteen-year-old petty criminal is brutally tortured and left in a farmer’s field to die. DCI Jack Lambert and his team think they have it all figured out. It’s a robbery gone wrong. Suspicion immediately falls on the man who called it in. What Jack doesn’t realise is that this is just the beginning. An escaped prisoner, an attempted hit, and a seemingly unending trail of violence and retribution follows. As the mystery unfolds, Jack begins to suspect the existence of a secret, but powerful, syndicate operating on the very edges of the North East’s criminal underworld. With the situation spiralling out of control, Jack finds himself at a crossroads—one which could lead him back into the kind of life he has spent a career running away from. Time is running out, and this case might not only cost Lambert his job, but also his life . . . Grave Intent is the second novel featuring DCI Jack Lambert but can easily be read as a stand-alone. A fast-paced police procedural, full of stunning twists and turns, it will appeal to fans of authors like Angela Marsons, Joy Ellis and Helen H. Durrant. “From its very first gut-wrenching chapter, I was completely hooked.” —Howard Linskey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores, for the first time, the turbulent social history of churchyards and cemeteries over the last 150 years. Using sites from across rural North Yorkshire, the text examines the workings of the Burial Acts and discloses the ways in which religious politics framed burial management. It presents an alternative history of burial which questions notions of tradition and modernity, and challenges long-standing assumptions about changing attitudes towards mortality in England. This study diverges from the long-standing tendency to regard the churchyard as inherently ‘traditional’ and the cemetery as essentially ‘modern’. Since 1850, both types of site have been subject to the influence of new expectations that burial space would guarantee family burial and the opportunity for formal commemoration. Although the population in central North Yorkshire declined, demand for burial space rose, meaning that many dozens of churchyards were extended, and forty new cemeteries were laid out. This text is accessible to undergraduates and postgraduates, and will be an essential resource for historians, archaeologists and local government officials.

Book excerpt: Archaeologists excavating burials often find that they are not the first to disturb the remains of the dead. Graves from many periods frequently show signs that others have been digging and have moved or taken away parts of the original funerary assemblage. Displaced bones and artefacts, traces of pits, and damage to tombs or coffins can all provide clues about post-burial activities. The last two decades have seen a rapid rise in interest in the study of post-depositional practices in graves, which has now developed into a new subfield within mortuary archaeology. This follows a long tradition of neglect, with disturbed graves previously regarded as interesting only to the degree they revealed evidence of the original funerary deposit. This book explores past human interactions with mortuary deposits, delving into the different ways graves and human remains were approached by people in the past and the reasons that led to such encounters. The primary focus of the volume is on cases of unexpected interference with individual graves soon after burial: re-encounters with human remains not anticipated by those who performed the funerary rites and constructed the tombs. However, a first step is always to distinguish these from natural and accidental processes, and methodological approaches are a major theme of discussion. Interactions with the remains of the dead are explored in eleven chapters ranging from the New Kingdom of Egypt to Viking Age Norway and from Bronze Age Slovakia to the ancient Maya. Each discusses cases of re-entries into graves, including desecration, tomb re-use, destruction of grave contents, as well as the removal of artefacts and human remains for reasons from material gain to commemoration, symbolic appropriation, ancestral rites, political chicanery, and retrieval of relics. The introduction presents many of the methodological issues which recur throughout the contributions, as this is a developing area with new approaches being applied to analyze post-depositional processes in graves.
