Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of work on the theological hermeneutics of Scripture in recent years has challenged and reimagined the divisions between systematic theology and biblical studies on the one hand and academy and church on the other. Also notable, however, has been the absence of a full-length treatment of theological interpretation from a Wesleyan perspective. This monograph develops a Wesleyan theological hermeneutic of Scripture, approached as a craft learned from a tradition-constituted appropriation of John Wesley’s hermeneutics. This hermeneutic requires a descriptive analysis of the context, grammar, and ruled reading of the literal sense in Wesley’s interpretive practices, as well as critical interaction with the analysis in light of contemporary issues. As a result of this interaction, continuity and discontinuity between Wesley’s and Wesleyan interpretation emerges and is accounted for. The Wesleyan theological hermeneutic developed here defines the church as Spirit-formed context within the larger divine economy of salvation, in contrast with Wesley’s emphasis on individual soteriology and underdeveloped ecclesiology. Within this community context, Wesleyan theological interpretation is a means of grace whereby the Holy Spirit reinterprets the identity of readers into children of God. Theological interpretation invites readers on a Wesleyan account to participate in the textually mediated identity of Jesus Christ through the gracious work of the Holy Spirit. Wesleyan identity is therefore a figurally created identity based on the literal sense of Scripture. Wesley’s analogy of faith, which rules his reading of Scripture, thus gives way to a more explicitly trinitarian rule of faith.

Book Synopsis The Whole Christ for the Whole World by : H. Ray Dunning
Download or read book The Whole Christ for the Whole World written by H. Ray Dunning and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the theological presuppositions that have informed the major explanations of the work of Christ from the perspective of Wesleyan theology's commitment to the universality of the atonement and its provision for both justification and sanctification. The Whole Christ for the Whole World proposes a paradigm that the author describes as "personal-relational" for understanding the work of Christ. Dunning argues that this "personal-relational" paradigm more adequately captures the "whole tenor of Scripture" than do the legal paradigms that have dominated the Western church, and Dunning seeks to demonstrate that the Wesleyan understanding of the work of Christ has been significantly informed by the mentality of the Eastern church.

Book Synopsis Encountering Jesus in Revelation by : Ben Boeckel
Download or read book Encountering Jesus in Revelation written by Ben Boeckel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-07 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Revelation really worth the effort? Does its message resonate with followers of Jesus in the here and now? Encountering Jesus in Revelation offers pastors and laypeople an accessible tool for studying Revelation within the local church. It situates Revelation in its ancient context while stressing how its apocalyptic nature addresses God’s people at every point in history, including our own. It does this by introducing apocalyptic writing as a form of literature and then surveys the alternative perspective Revelation offers on the world of its readers. That perspective is one in which we encounter Jesus and his call to leave behind the often-unrecognized beasts and monsters that inhabit our world. Readers who find themselves reluctant to study Revelation because of the confusing nature of its contents—and of academic books written about it—will find that Encountering Jesus in Revelation offers accessible and applicable insights as it explores how Revelation addresses its readers today.

Download or read book Global Dictionary of Theology written by William A. Dyrness and published by IVP Academic. This book was released on 2008-11-10 with total page 996 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological dictionaries are foundational to any theological library. But until now there has been no Global Dictionary of Theology, a theological dictionary that presumes the contribution of the Western tradition but moves beyond it to embrace and explore a full range of global expressions of theology. The Global Dictionary of Theology is inspired by the shift of the center of Christianity from the West to the Global South. But it also reflects the increase in two-way traffic between these two sectors as well as the global awareness that has permeated popular culture to an unprecedented degree. The editorial perspective of the Global Dictionary of Theology is an ecumenical evangelicalism that is receptive to discovering new facets of truth through listening and conversation on a global scale. Thus a distinctive feature of the Global Dictionary of Theology is its conversational approach. Contributors have been called on to write in the spirit of engaging in a larger theological conversation in which alternative views are expected and invited. William A. Dyrness, Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, Juan F. Martinez and Simon Chan edit approximately 250 articles written by over 100 contributors representing the global spectrum of theological perspectives. Pastors, theological teachers, theological students and lay Christian leaders will all find the Global Dictionary of Theology to be a resource that unfolds new dimensions and reveals new panoramas of theological perspective and inquiry. Here is a new launching point for doing theology in today's global context.
