Book Synopsis The Old Latin Manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke by : Annette Weissenrieder
Download or read book The Old Latin Manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke written by Annette Weissenrieder and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Codex Vercellensis is one of the great treasures of the Vercelli library, containing the four Gospels. Written during the fourth century, it is the oldest remaining Latin manuscript of the Greek New Testament and one of the most important witnesses to the early understanding of the Gospels. In this edition, Weissenrieder and Visinoni provide the Latin text of the work parallel to spectral images, indicating abbreviations, lineation, foliation and staurograms as well as a (reconstructed) critical edition with references to the most important texts of the Old Latin tradition as well as Greek and Syriac manuscripts and a commentary to this unique Latin translation. The analyses involved will be: (1) digital methods, (2) philological and theological, (3) translation theories in antiquity as well as (4) genealogical. The authors call into question assumptions about the text preserved in the manuscript, arguing that it represents an early stage of the Latin Gospels. The manuscript will be examined in light of its wide-ranging cultural and historical context. As such, the project aligns itself methodologically with the field of manuscript studies and attempts to integrate the specialized expertise of various disciplines in the study of a single object.

Download or read book Demonic History written by Kirk Wetters and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-31 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious book, Kirk Wetters traces the genealogy of the demonic in German literature from its imbrications in Goethe to its varying legacies in the work of essential authors, both canonical and less well known, such as Gundolf, Spengler, Benjamin, Lukács, and Doderer. Wetters focuses especially on the philological and metaphorological resonances of the demonic from its core formations through its appropriations in the tumultuous twentieth century. Propelled by equal parts theoretical and historical acumen, Wetters explores the ways in which the question of the demonic has been employed to multiple theoretical, literary, and historico-political ends. He thereby produces an intellectual history that will be consequential both to scholars of German literature and to comparatists.

Book Synopsis Towards a General Theory of Translational Action by : Katharina Reiss
Download or read book Towards a General Theory of Translational Action written by Katharina Reiss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of the seminal book by Katharina Reiß and Hans Vermeer, Grundlegung einer allgemeinen Translationstheorie, first published in 1984. The first part of the book was written by Vermeer and explains the theoretical foundations and basic principles of skopos theory as a general theory of translation and interpreting or ‘translational action’, whereas the second part, penned by Katharina Reiß, seeks to integrate her text-typological approach, first presented in 1971, as a ‘specific theory’ that focuses on those cases in which the skopos requires equivalence of functions between the source and target texts. Almost 30 years after it first appeared, this key publication is now finally accessible to the next generations of translation scholars. In her translation, Christiane Nord attempts to put skopos theory and her own concept of ‘function plus loyalty’ to the test, by producing a comprehensible, acceptable text for a rather heterogeneous audience of English-speaking students and scholars all over the world, at the same time as acting as a loyal intermediary for the authors, to whom she feels deeply indebted as a former student and colleague.
Book Synopsis 40 Days of Dating by : Timothy Goodman
Download or read book 40 Days of Dating written by Timothy Goodman and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What would happen if Harry met Sally in the age of Tinder and Snapchat? . . . A field guide to Millennial dating in New York City” (New York Daily News). When New York–based graphic designers and long-time friends Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh found themselves single at the same time, they decided to try an experiment. The old adage says that it takes forty days to change a habit—could the same be said for love? So they agreed to date each other for forty days, record their experiences in questionnaires, photographs, videos, texts, and artworks, and post the material on a website they would create for this purpose. What began as a small experiment between two friends became an Internet sensation, drawing five million unique (and obsessed) visitors from around the globe to their site and their story. 40 Days of Dating: An Experiment is a beautifully designed, expanded look at the experiment and the results, including a great deal of material that never made it onto the site, such as who they were as friends and individuals before the forty days and who they have become since.

Book Synopsis Hovering over the face of the deep by : Gertrud Yde Iversen
Download or read book Hovering over the face of the deep written by Gertrud Yde Iversen and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Why does everyone need to die?', 'Does my hamster have a soul?' Theologians and philosophers have always wrestled with such questions. The articles gathered in this book - which represent recent educational approaches to philosophizing and theologizing with children - are very diverse in approach and emphasis. Nevertheless all underline the importance of supporting children and young people in their efforts to discuss questions of meaning. Quotations in the articles capture with vividness and immediacy their intense engagement with the puzzles of existence. Educators may learn better to support such processes, and by the same token be enriched by the interaction. Such processes resemble the phenomenon of the Black Sun where starlings get together from different directions in large flocks in order to survive the night. Both, as indicated in the title of this book are hovering over the face of the deep. This book offers a meeting place for theologians and philosophers, and although the conversation does a great deal to clarify their relationship, differences in opinion remain. Its contributors are from Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.
