Tertiary volcaniclastic deposits occur only as small outliers on downthrown sides of faults. Erosion has removed the thin Tertiary section to expose the 1365 m section of Cretaceous limestones, which are mostly biomicrite (wackestone). Tertiary diabase sills have extensively intruded upper Cretaceous limestone, but intruded the entire interval from .the upper Comanchean Buda Limestone to the middle Oligocene Mitchell Mesa Tuff, inclusive. The sills form part of a belt of mafic sills which extends into Mexico as much as 70 km to the southeast.

Book excerpt: In the southeastern Davis Mountains, Trans-Pecos Texas, the Tertiary Buck Bill volcanic aeries, 4,600 feet thick, covers most of the Cathedral Mountain quadrangle, where it is more nearly complete than in Buck Hill and other quadrangles to the south. Northward from this typical southern sequence the Duff formation changes from dominantly rhyolite tuff to lavas, tuff, and conglomerate (Decie member), the Potato Hill andesite gradually changes from highly porphyritie to nonporphyritic rook, and the Crossen trachyte gains an appreciable amount of quartz. The name Pruett is restricted to the lowermost unit of tuff, sandstone, conglomerate, and nonmarine limestone; accordingly, it is overlain in ascending order by the Crossen trachyte, Sheep Canyon basalt, and Potato Hill andesite. The age of the Pruett tuff (restricted), on the basis of vertebrate fossils, is upper Eocene (Duchesne); it is equivalent to the lower Vieja series, to the Huelster formation of the McCutcheon series, and probably to the lower Chisos beds. The volcanic rocks rest unconformably on the Cretaceous Boquillas and Buda limestones. Other sedimentary formations exposed are the Grayson marl, Georgetown limestone, Edwards limestone, and conglomeratic sandstone of Trinity (?) age of the Comanche series; and the Permian Capitan limestone and Word formation of the Guadalupe series. Small areas along streams and over valley flats are veneered with Quaternary alluvium. Intrusive bodies of alkalic microsyenite, later than the youngest volcanic unit, are numerous; some effected considerable local deformation of the layered rocks. Effects of five crustal disturbances can be seen---mid-Mesozoic; late Cretaceous, pre-upper Eocene; and three in the late Cenozoic. Differential erosion of the intruded, folded, and faulted volcanic succession has fashioned a rough and diversified landscape
