Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He should've killed me when he had the chance!" When April Cofield Essix delivers those words in her motivational speeches, people sit up and take notice. Within the last year alone, well over two thousand people have heard that statement and it has changed their lives. A former crack addict, prostitute and prison inmate, Essix is an authority on the life of someone with a drug addiction. She speaks candidly about the destructive behavior that almost took her life and the one power on earth strong enough to help her live through it. From Crack to Christ: A Witness is the written testimony of her life, and, for readers, a straightforward voice that speaks from experience of a pandemic that has spread across the nation.

Book excerpt: There is so much to say about a woman who doesnt know the meaning of the word cant. Kimily has the passion to heal, deliver, and set free. God uses this passion to continuously renew her faith, instilling her belief that with Christ all things are possible. Although Kimily has had more than her fair share of obstacles to overcome, she is, what one may call, a Bodacious woman of Faith an individual who quickly arises at the sound of Gods voice, with great conviction. Kimily will not stop short of carrying out her purpose and call in any given season. I dont know if she realizes it, but she has the ability to empower life and prosperity in the life of another in the midst of a mere conversation. This life story is a great testimony of humility, acceptance, grace and love. It is with great zeal that I recommend this book to all readers, young and seasoned. At one time or another, we all will have addictions to overcome. Whether it is drugs, alcohol, sex, or plain negativity, true problems occur when an individual is not willing to face their weaknesses. When weaknesses are not acknowledged and dealt with accordingly, the individual is inevitably suffocated by their own challenges. When reading through the pages of this book, you will witness Kimilys ability to persevere through the miry muck and walk forth in great favor and God given ability. To Kimily Thompson Jenkins, God is our father and He is a fan of your success. Thank you for understanding the process. Youre God Daughter, Absolute (Portia Bryant)

Book excerpt: This book is an honest and telling, real-life story of tragedy, abandonment, addiction and loss but ultimately of how deposits of rejection unchecked and uncured left a child still screaming for her father even though her body had matured. This truly is an insignia to the writer of her triumphs and through the extremes of her many challenges, we find all our stories being interwoven into the tapestry of each chapter.

These valuable lessons would prove useful later in my life as I looked for a way out of a bad situation I was in due to bad decisions that I had made. Questioning my self-worth as a child, I turned away from the church trying to find a place to fit in. Not realizing the extent of how much I did not know at the age of twelve, I started to get lost in the world of drugs and alcohol. My addictions became stronger as I got older and experienced a life where not all things worked the way I hoped they would. While my addictions went from drinking beer and smoking marijuana to smoking crack and drinking anything available, a place to fit in became more of a place of isolation for me as I no longer felt comfortable being around most family members if I had something stronger than just a few beers. This was in most cases when I would get high with other addicts or alone because for me a drink was always better with crack. At least that was the lie I would tell myself, along with the lie that my problem wasn't that bad. Finally, after thirty years of addiction, on June 6, 2006, I hit my rock bottom, but I remembered what I had learned as a child about a power above all other powers. I prayed to the highest power, and God, my Father in heaven, made a way for me to get into a drug-and-alcohol treatment program. I went through the program and took what I needed from it with the understanding that words also have power. Because of my faith and what I had learned in church as a child, I refuse to put the words of man. Addicts suffer from a disease for which there's no cure above the word of God. You are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37) and By his stripes you are healed (1 Peter 2:24). I do not believe that Jesus died for me and rose from the dead with power over all things except an addiction. I believe He came to conquer ALL sin so that all lost sinners who believed in Him and worked on building a personal relationship with Him could be recovered when He returned.

Book excerpt: This book having been years in the making is a remarkable testimony of God's Amazing grace and saving power! A one hundred percent true account of a transition out a backslidden state of a gun-toting life of crime and addiction, to a "fiery love affair" with Jesus and a strong commitment to advancing His Kingdom. From sacrificial giving, mentoring, volunteer work, and evangelizing, I am no longer a prisoner of the state of Alabama, but a "prisoner of The Lord." My only desire for this book is that it reaches those it has been ordained to reach for the Kingdom of God. God has commissioned me to take this message of hope where it is needed most. To a lost and dying world. Jesus has done the impossible in and through me. He's transformed me from a dope dealer to "hope dealer."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book will make a profound difference for the church in this moment in history." — The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry Sometimes it takes disruption and loss to break us open and call us home to God. It’s not surprising that a global pandemic and once-in-a-generation reckoning with white supremacy—on top of decades of systemic decline—have spurred Christians everywhere to ask who we are, why God placed us here and what difference that makes to the world. In this critical yet loving book, the author explores the American story and the Episcopal story in order to find out how communities steeped in racism, establishment, and privilege can at last fall in love with Jesus, walk humbly with the most vulnerable and embody beloved community in our own broken but beautiful way. The Church Cracked Open invites us to surrender privilege and redefine church, not just for the sake of others, but for our own salvation and liberation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The path of addictions is often ugly and grave, it is the pit of hell. This story is the result of surrending my mind, my heart, and my soul with prayers unto God for over seven years to take the risk and courage to pen my life's story of an addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol for over 25 years. I was hooked to crack, and its devastating lifestyle. My prayer and heartfelt desire is for those people who read the book may find hope, empowerment, and compassion that those people who suffer from all kinds of addictions, substance abuse, crack addiction, alcoholism, and other family dysfunctions will find freedom and healing from their addictions. It was nobody but God who has given me a brand new life. A transformed life from the ravages of a filthy existence due to my crack addiction. The memoir takes you on a journey into the crack(s) of my life past and present and the underlying causes of how I got hooked on crack cocaine and how it brought me to my knees. Spiritually, many of us are bankrupt, dysfunctional, running from God instead of running to God. I've learned some of these same crack(s)are common to all people in the world. Most of all, God has anointed me to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. I never dreamed or planned to become a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. God called me and the power of God delivered me. I do believe that miracles do happen. Jesus touched me in the bowels of my crack addiction. I pray through this story that you feel the power of God touching you. God answers prayers and miracles do happen. With precious adoration to my Mother, Mrs. Ruth Darwin, a wonderful Mom, a faithful Woman of God, my Royal Queen, and to my late beloved Father, William R. Darwin who is now resting with the King of Glory, my soldier, my hero. To my children and grandchild, Swen, Raquel, and Keysaun whose patience, love, and understanding gave me plenty of room to grow, to write, and to make mistakes knowing that God is real and that God cares about us. Thank you Swen and Raquel, I love you! and they love me, unconditionally! To my husband, Willie B. whose love never fades, a King's kid. Thank you for being the best you can be, more importantly, a man of God. A man after God's own heart. All of them share a special place in my heart; all of them share in this journey of life's struggles, and memoirs with me.

Book excerpt: Conversations matter. Yet, recently, good conversations about faith have been increasingly squeezed out of the public sphere. Seeking to reopen the debate, Justin Brierley began to invite atheists and sceptics on to Premier Christian Radio to air arguments for and against the Christian faith. But how has ten years of discussion with atheists affected the presenter’s faith? Reflecting on conversations with Richard Dawkins, Derren Brown and many more, Justin explains why he still finds Christianity the most compelling explanation for life, the universe and everything. And why, regardless of belief or background, we should all welcome the conversation. ‘Beautifully written, brilliantly argued, Justin’s book will thrill Christians and challenge atheists.’ R. T. Kendall, author and pastor ‘Justin has that happy knack of being able to get people of diametrically opposed opinions debating the big issues.’ John Lennox, Professor of Mathematics, University of Oxford

In Addicted to Christ, Helena Hansen provides an in-depth analysis of Pentecostal ministries in Puerto Rico that were founded and managed by self-identified 'ex-addicts.' Richly ethnographic, the book melds Hansen's dual expertise in public anthropology and psychology. Through her interviewees' stories, she examines key elements of the Pentecostal system: mysticism, ascetic practice, and the idea other-worldliness. She then shares the strategies of Pentecostal ministries, which, according to street ministries, are the core elements of spiritual victory over addiction: transformation techniques to build spiritual strength and authority through pain and discipline; cultivation of alternative masculinities based on male converts' reclamation of domestic space; and radical rupture from a post-industrial 'culture of disposability.' By contrasting the ministries' logic of addiction with that of biomedicine, Hansen rethinks roads to recovery while discovering unexpected convergences with biomedicine, revealing the true sway of street corner ministries"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Writing in response to our current “constitutional crisis,” New York Times bestselling author and Christian activist Jim Wallis urges America to return to the tenets of Jesus once again as the means to save us from the polarizing bitterness and anger of our tribal nation. In Christ in Crisis Jim Wallis provides a path of spiritual healing and solidarity to help us heal the divide separating Americans today. Building on “Reclaiming Jesus”—the declaration he and other church leaders wrote in May 2018 to address America’s current crisis—Wallis argues that Christians have become disconnected from Jesus and need to revisit their spiritual foundations. By pointing to eight questions Jesus asked or is asked, Wallis provides a means to measure whether we are truly aligned with the moral and spiritual foundations of our Christian faith. “Christians have often remembered, re-discovered, and returned to their obedient discipleship of Jesus Christ—both personal and public—in times of trouble. It’s called coming home,” Wallis reminds us. While he addresses the dividing lines and dangers facing our nation, the religious and cultural commentator’s focus isn’t politics; it’s faith. As he has done throughout his career, Wallis offers comfort, empathy, and a practical roadmap. Christ in Crisis is a constructive field guide for all those involved in resistance and renewal initiatives in faith communities in the post-2016 political context.
