Book Synopsis Mathematical Genetics by : Andreĭ Nikolaevich Volobuev
Download or read book Mathematical Genetics written by Andreĭ Nikolaevich Volobuev and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, mathematical aspects of a population genetics are considered. On the basis of the Hardy - Weinberg law, the standard approach to population genetics problems is stated. Along with the standard approach, the necessity of separate research of family tree genetics and population genetics, which represent set of the family trees, is shown. Family trees are investigated by methods of discrete mathematics in a discrete time scale which is defined by alternation of generations. It is necessary to transit to a continuous time scale, continuous functions, therefore the Hardy-Weinberg law is written down in the form of the differential equation of the second order. Transition to continuous functions has allowed us to receive new and certainly not trivial results in population genetics. In particular, a new approach to problems of a mutations occurrence under radiation is discussed, of a new growths occurrence, and migrations of populations under various conditions to reveal nonlinear character of inbreeding and natural selection. The book can be useful to geneticists, students-biologists, post-graduate students and everyone who is interested in problems of population genetics.

Book Synopsis Evolutionary Theory by : Sean H. Rice
Download or read book Evolutionary Theory written by Sean H. Rice and published by Sinauer Associates Incorporated. This book was released on 2004 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary Theory is for graduate students, researchers, and advanced undergraduates who want an understanding of the mathematical and biological reasoning that underlies evolutionary theory. The book covers all of the major theoretical approaches used to study the mechanics of evolution, including classical one- and two-locus models, diffusion theory, coalescent theory, quantitative genetics, and game theory. There are also chapters on theoretical approaches to the evolution of development and on multilevel selection theory. Each subject is illustrated by focusing on those results that have the greatest power to influence the way that we think about how evolution works. These major results are developed in detail, with many accompanying illustrations, showing exactly how they are derived and how the mathematics relates to the biological insights that they yield. In this way, the reader learns something of the actual machinery of different branches of theory while gaining a deeper understanding of the evolutionary process. Roughly half of the book focuses on gene-based models, the other half being concerned with general phenotype-based theory. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the fundamental relationships between the different branches of theory, illustrating how all of these branches are united by a few basic, universal, principles. The only mathematical background assumed is basic calculus. More advanced mathematical methods are explained, with the help of an extensive appendix, when they are needed.
Book Synopsis The Fundamentals of Modern Statistical Genetics by : Nan M. Laird
Download or read book The Fundamentals of Modern Statistical Genetics written by Nan M. Laird and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-13 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the statistical models and methods that are used to understand human genetics, following the historical and recent developments of human genetics. Starting with Mendel’s first experiments to genome-wide association studies, the book describes how genetic information can be incorporated into statistical models to discover disease genes. All commonly used approaches in statistical genetics (e.g. aggregation analysis, segregation, linkage analysis, etc), are used, but the focus of the book is modern approaches to association analysis. Numerous examples illustrate key points throughout the text, both of Mendelian and complex genetic disorders. The intended audience is statisticians, biostatisticians, epidemiologists and quantitatively- oriented geneticists and health scientists wanting to learn about statistical methods for genetic analysis, whether to better analyze genetic data, or to pursue research in methodology. A background in intermediate level statistical methods is required. The authors include few mathematical derivations, and the exercises provide problems for students with a broad range of skill levels. No background in genetics is assumed.

Book Synopsis Foundations of Genetic Algorithms 1993 (FOGA 2) by : FOGA
Download or read book Foundations of Genetic Algorithms 1993 (FOGA 2) written by FOGA and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Genetic Algorithms, Volume 2 provides insight of theoretical work in genetic algorithms. This book provides a general understanding of a canonical genetic algorithm. Organized into six parts encompassing 19 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of genetic algorithms in the broader adaptive systems context. This text then reviews some results in mathematical genetics that use probability distributions to characterize the effects of recombination on multiple loci in the absence of selection. Other chapters examine the static building block hypothesis (SBBH), which is the underlying assumption used to define deception. This book discusses as well the effect of noise on the quality of convergence of genetic algorithms. The final chapter deals with the primary goal in machine learning and artificial intelligence, which is to dynamically and automatically decompose problems into simpler problems to facilitate their solution. This book is a valuable resource for theorists and genetic algorithm researchers.

Book Synopsis Heterogeneity in Statistical Genetics by : Derek Gordon
Download or read book Heterogeneity in Statistical Genetics written by Derek Gordon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogeneity, or mixtures, are ubiquitous in genetics. Even for data as simple as mono-genic diseases, populations are a mixture of affected and unaffected individuals. Still, most statistical genetic association analyses, designed to map genes for diseases and other genetic traits, ignore this phenomenon. In this book, we document methods that incorporate heterogeneity into the design and analysis of genetic and genomic association data. Among the key qualities of our developed statistics is that they include mixture parameters as part of the statistic, a unique component for tests of association. A critical feature of this work is the inclusion of at least one heterogeneity parameter when performing statistical power and sample size calculations for tests of genetic association. We anticipate that this book will be useful to researchers who want to estimate heterogeneity in their data, develop or apply genetic association statistics where heterogeneity exists, and accurately evaluate statistical power and sample size for genetic association through the application of robust experimental design.
