Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and the Public School: An American Problem At the meeting of the Inter-Church Conference in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November, 1905, at which twenty-nine Protestant Churches of America were represented, one of the papers treated the question of Weekday Religious Instruction. Its main proposition was favorably received, and the following resolution was adopted by the Conference: Resolved, That in the need of more systematic education in religion, we recommend for the favorable consideration of the Public School authorities of the country the proposal to allow the children to absent themselves without detriment from the public schools on Wednesday or on some other afternoon of the school week for the purpose of attending religious instruction in their own churches; and we urge upon the churches the advisability of availing themselves of the opportunity so granted to give such instruction in addition to that given on Sunday. The further consideration of the subject was referred to the Executive Committee. By direction of this Committee a report on Week-day Instruction in Religion was presented at the First Meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, held in Philadelphia in 1908. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education in the Public Schools of the State and City of New York: A Historical Study In consequence of disagreement between the Nine Men and the Director, in 1649, the former presented a memorial and remonstrance to the states-general Of Holland, setting forth the reasons and cause Of the great decay of New Netherland, and in what manner New N ether land should be relieved. Under the latter head is found the following complaint: There ought to be also a public school provided with at least two good teachers, so that the youth, in so wild a country, where there are so many dissolute people, may, first of all, be well instructed and indoctrinated not only in reading and writing, but also in the knowledge and fear Of the Lord (n. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Social Theory of Religious Education What consequences for religious education follow from the now widely accepted social interpretation of the Christian mes sage? The present work is an attempt to answer this question. The answer is not simple. For the social message does not require us merely to insert this or that new duty into our present scheme of living, but also to judge every detail of conduct from a higher point of view. We are required to organize the whole of life upon a different level. It would be strange indeed if the new meaning that this gives to every-day affairs did not change our outlook upon child life. If we are to be logical and practical in our social Christianity, we must revise our policies with respect to children at least as much as our policies with respect to adults. The chapters that follow undertake to show the directions that this revision will need to take. As we proceed, it will appear that the whole perspective of religious education undergoes a change. The central purpose, to begin with, grows more specific because the nature of good ness is seen to be as concrete as the neighbor who lives next door. Christian experience comes out of the clouds, because in our dealings with our brother whom we have seen we are deal ing with the Father whom we have not seen - yes, we here come into relation with what is deepest in his character and purposes. To Christian ears these statements do not sound strange, per haps, yet when they are applied to the religious life of the young they do sing a new melody. A profounder significance attaches to the will of a child, and especially to his relations with persons, whether children or adults. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of Adolescents In selecting and preparing the material for this little volume, the author has intentionally avoided the exclusively academic and scholastic point of View. The needs Of parents, teachers and other adult leaders, who are facing practical problems, have been kept in mind. Indeed, many of the paragraphs were written for the express purpose Of answering questions which had been asked by per sons who were facing perplexing situations in their own homes or schools. During the past three years, the author has delivered several short courses of lectures in con munity schools Of religious education and in sum mer schools on such subjects as: The Psychology Of Adolescent Boyhood, The Religious Nurture Of Adolescent Young People, The Psychology of Religion, and Principles and Methods Of Recrea tional Leadership. As collateral reading in these courses, one monograph Of a series Of pamphlets formerly published by the American Institute of Child Life Of Philadelphia: The Government Of Adolescent Young People, prepared by William Byron Forbush, was used. The demand for it soon exhausted the third edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and for the Healing of the Church It seems strange that Luther in neither of his treatises on the establishment of public schools speaks specifically of the religious education of the child. His catechisms were not written for the school, but for 'pastors and teachers, ' as the preface to the Small Catechism says, and for 'house-fathers, ' as the headings of the various parts say. Even Gerhard looks to the ministers and not to the schools for the religious training of the children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Emphasis in Religious Education In the reform that is now taking place in religious education certain things are funda mental, others accessory. The accessories were the first to attract popular attention. We were told that the hands of Sunday-school pupils, as well as their minds, require occupa tion. Teachers were urged to learn how to make a lesson plan, how to ask questions, how to tell stories. Great stress was laid upon the gradation of pupils and of lessons. All this advice is indispensable, and it is having excel lent results. But there is a prior question, namely, What sort of men and women do we want our pupils to become, and therefore what principles shall control the content of our teaching? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education: A Comprehensive Text Book This Text Book is the outcome of a wide demand for a complete Handbook, covering fully all phases of Religious Education in the Church. There was no such book hitherto extant. It took a library of some thirty or more volumes to cover the necessary field, as laid down in the Standard Course for teacher-training set forth by the Joint Commission on Sunday Schools. Such reading was overwhelm ing, unnecessary (for often but a few pages or precepts of a writer applied directly to Religious Education), and costly in the purchase of so many volumes. The author prepared a smaller book, Sunday School Teaching, a compilation of authorities covering 175 pages, in 1903, which has gone through three large editions in five years, being the Guide Book for the training of several thousand Sunday School teachers, of all religious bodies. Even day school educators found it suggestive and illuminat ing. It will be continued in the market. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It aims to de scribe the needs of the future, and to equip the childhood of the present for the mature life that is to be. Teaching must always proceed on the as sumption that its test is to be found not in the im mediate product which it sends out from the class room, but in the wider circles Of influence which it will exert on the days and the activities that are to be. A wise teacher concerns himself pri marily with the task of equipping human souls for life's service. It lays the emphasis of its concern not upon the scraps of knowledge which it gives from day to day, but upon the fiber of character which it builds for all the years to come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Materials of Religious Education: Being the Principal Papers Presented At, and the Proceedings of the Fourth General Convention of the Religious Education Association, Rochester, New York February 5 7, 1907 That state of things has forever vanished. We have seen the rise and marvelous development of our great public school system, con trolled and administered by the State. We have seen the founding and growth of state universities, dominating entire systems of education, and forbidden to ally themselves with any religious creed. We have seen the acceptance of the educational philosophy of Froebel and Pestalozzi, whose attitude toward childhood is hardly that of Cotton Mather and Jonathan Edwards. We have seen great educational gifts made by men whose success has been in the financial rather than the moral world. We have met teachers whose interest is not in students, but in studies, and who, confining themselves to the search for facts, deliberately relegate character building to the churches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament in Modern Education Recent events have undoubtedly brought a great increase of interest in the significance of Morality and Religion for Education. The Science and Art of religious Education are, however, still in their infancy. The most fundamental problems still await scientific discussion and'a practical solution. The specific features of the educational ideal, the definite value and application of psychological study and its results - both personal and soc1al - the educational significance of Religion and Theology, the relation between Home, School and Church as educational agencies, and many similar questions still represent difficulties that have not been overcome. Rather unfortunately, almost exclusive attention has been given to the elaboration of educational methods, to the comparative neglect of the content, and material of moral and religious instruction. The latter, however, must become our primary study, for how we teach must in the end depend upon what we want to teach. So far the Bible - and that the mediaeval Bible - has been taken for granted in educational discussion, but in reality it presents a problem of ultimate significance. After all, wh should we, in the schools of the twentieth century, teac as an important element in our instruction, the literature and history of an ancient Semitic race or the fugitive writings of a little group of Hellenistic religious enthusiasts of the first century On the face of it such a question demands a far more thorough and scientific discussion than has yet been given to it. Our very right to live comfortably m the modern world as distinguished from the Middle Ages depends upon the answer we give to 1t. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and the School The problem of religion in public education, although doubtless of first rate importance, is frequently felt to be one of considerable difficulty. While it seems clear, on the one hand, that religious ideas and institutions have been of too great significance in the cul tural history of the race for the school wholly to absolve itself of the duty of introducing the child to this part of his social inheritance, grave and insur mountable difiiculties are often believed to exist in the way of introducing the subject of religion into the public school. These difficulties seem to me to be largely gratuitous and avoidable. They are created, on the one hand, by a somewhat stiff and one-sided concep tion Of religion itself, and, on the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic View of the Public School Question: A Lecture, Delivered in the Hall of the Cooper Institute, Sunday Evening, January 16, 1870 The following lecture is only the substance of the discourse which I had the honor to give in the 000per Institute on Sunday evening last. I have written it out from my memory of what I then said, for two im portant reasons, - first, to avoid all possible misunder standing of the Catholic View on so important a sub jcet; and secondly, to put on record the arguments which I then brought before the American public. Many, also, who were not able to be present, may wish to know the nature of the claims which we address to that sense of justice which eminently belongs to our countrymen. The immediate occasion of the lecture is explained by the following correspondence. I take this Opportunity to thank the distinguished gentlemen who honored me by their consideration, the audience who received me with so much kindness, and the es teemed members of my own congregation, to whom I feel myself largely indebted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City Institute for Religious Teachers The progress in religious education in the last few years has been highly encouraging. The subject has attained something of a status as a scientific study, and significant investigative and experimental work has been done. More than that, trained men and women in increasing numbers have been devoting themselves to the endeavor to work out in churches and Sunday schools the practical problems of organization and method. It would seem that the time has come to present to the large body of workers in the field of religious education some of the results of the studies and practice of those who have attained a measure of educational success. With this end in view the present series of books on "Principles and Methods of Religious Education" has been undertaken. It is intended that these books, while thoroughly scientific in character, shall be at the same time popular in presentation, so that they may be available to Sunday-school and church workers everywhere. The endeavor is definitely made to take into account the small school with meager equipment, as well as to hold before the larger schools the ideals of equipment and training.
