Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and the School The problem of religion in public education, although doubtless of first rate importance, is frequently felt to be one of considerable difficulty. While it seems clear, on the one hand, that religious ideas and institutions have been of too great significance in the cul tural history of the race for the school wholly to absolve itself of the duty of introducing the child to this part of his social inheritance, grave and insur mountable difiiculties are often believed to exist in the way of introducing the subject of religion into the public school. These difficulties seem to me to be largely gratuitous and avoidable. They are created, on the one hand, by a somewhat stiff and one-sided concep tion Of religion itself, and, on the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and the Public School: An American Problem At the meeting of the Inter-Church Conference in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November, 1905, at which twenty-nine Protestant Churches of America were represented, one of the papers treated the question of Weekday Religious Instruction. Its main proposition was favorably received, and the following resolution was adopted by the Conference: Resolved, That in the need of more systematic education in religion, we recommend for the favorable consideration of the Public School authorities of the country the proposal to allow the children to absent themselves without detriment from the public schools on Wednesday or on some other afternoon of the school week for the purpose of attending religious instruction in their own churches; and we urge upon the churches the advisability of availing themselves of the opportunity so granted to give such instruction in addition to that given on Sunday. The further consideration of the subject was referred to the Executive Committee. By direction of this Committee a report on Week-day Instruction in Religion was presented at the First Meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, held in Philadelphia in 1908. As to the correctness of the conclu sion, and the pertinency and power of the argu ment to sustain it, the reader can fairly judge only by perusing the entire series of essays. If he will turn to the last number, entitled The Conclusion, he will find a summary of the whole discussion, and be the better able to judge of the relations of its several parts to each other. No one aspect of the question exhausts it and no examination of it can be deemed at all thorough or complete that does not carefully consider the principles and ends of civil government, especially as constitutionally es tablished in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of Adolescents In selecting and preparing the material for this little volume, the author has intentionally avoided the exclusively academic and scholastic point of View. The needs Of parents, teachers and other adult leaders, who are facing practical problems, have been kept in mind. Indeed, many of the paragraphs were written for the express purpose Of answering questions which had been asked by per sons who were facing perplexing situations in their own homes or schools. During the past three years, the author has delivered several short courses of lectures in con munity schools Of religious education and in sum mer schools on such subjects as: The Psychology Of Adolescent Boyhood, The Religious Nurture Of Adolescent Young People, The Psychology of Religion, and Principles and Methods Of Recrea tional Leadership. As collateral reading in these courses, one monograph Of a series Of pamphlets formerly published by the American Institute of Child Life Of Philadelphia: The Government Of Adolescent Young People, prepared by William Byron Forbush, was used. The demand for it soon exhausted the third edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education: A Comprehensive Text Book This Text Book is the outcome of a wide demand for a complete Handbook, covering fully all phases of Religious Education in the Church. There was no such book hitherto extant. It took a library of some thirty or more volumes to cover the necessary field, as laid down in the Standard Course for teacher-training set forth by the Joint Commission on Sunday Schools. Such reading was overwhelm ing, unnecessary (for often but a few pages or precepts of a writer applied directly to Religious Education), and costly in the purchase of so many volumes. The author prepared a smaller book, Sunday School Teaching, a compilation of authorities covering 175 pages, in 1903, which has gone through three large editions in five years, being the Guide Book for the training of several thousand Sunday School teachers, of all religious bodies. Even day school educators found it suggestive and illuminat ing. It will be continued in the market. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion in the Common Schools: Three Lectures Delivered in the City of Cincinnati, in October, 1869 But now comes up another question, ' equally momentous alike involving a fundamental change in our system of public instruction. The Constitution of Ohio declares that the public school moneys shall not be used in support of any religious or other sect. The proposition now is to banish religion itself from all the public schools of Cincinnati; a proceeding which would deliver up our magnificent system of instruction to the smallest, least influential and most intolerant of all sects, the sect of atheists; the other sect which denies the existence of God, the Spiritual nature of man, the union of religion and morality and the immortality of the soul. It proposes virtually to place the million dollars, now raised for the education of the people in this city, and the fifty thousand school-children of Cincinnati, in the hands of a sect which denies every great religious belief that has prevailed since the creation of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church School and the Sunday School Normal Guide Plain men, indeed, were the fishermen of Galilee who first taught the Gospel, but they were not uneducated men. They may not have been familiar with the subtle ties of Greek philosophy, nor were they ranked as schol ars in the then approved Jewish schools. But they Were men of native strength, taught in the Hebrew Scriptures. They enjoyed intimate fellowship with the wisest of teachers for three years. They were earnest men and then, there came upon them a supernatural baptism. This gave them power over the dogmatists of Judea, the false philosophers of Greece, and the masses of the people, both Jews and Greeks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Religions: Being Three Lectures Delivered, at the Summer School of Harvard University in July, 1908 When the invitation to deliver these lectures came, it was probably intended that they should discuss the attitude of present day Christian teachers towards those of other religions. This, however, seemed fruitless. The attitude of Christian teachers to-day towards their brothers who do not know the Father is practically determined by the individual's apprehension of the Message he is sent to deliver. The one who understands that it is a Message from the One Father to His children everywhere will approach other teachers as brother draws near to brother.
