Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in previous volumes, readers will find a multidisciplinary forum for communicating knowledge related to the botany, horticulture, and pharmacology of herbs, spices, and medicinal plants. While magical and mystical powers have been associated with these plants through the ages, continued investigations in such areas as production, nomenclature, uses, chemical constitution, and dynamics help elucidate the affiliated chemical and physical processes that contribute to their unique flavor, fragrance, pharmacological, and other bioactive properties. This collection of articles examines the potential of natural products as pesticides, the richness of the Chinese Pharmacopeia, the similarities of Eastern Asian and Eastern North American medicinal plants, the use of borage as a source of gamma linolenic acid, and the botanical nomenclature of medicinal plants.

Book excerpt: Biological invasions by alien (non-native) species are widely recognized as a significant component of human-caused global environmental change and the second most important cause of biodiversity decline. Alien species threaten many European ecosystems and have serious environmental, economic and health impacts. The DAISIE (Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventories for Europe) project has now brought together all available information on alien species in Europe (terrestrial, aquatic and marine) and from all taxa (fungi, plants, animals). Thus for the first time, an overview and assessment of biological invasions in the Pan-European region is finally possible. The Handbook of Alien Species in Europe summarises the major findings of this groundbreaking research and addresses the invasion trends, pathways, and both economic as well as ecological impact for eight major taxonomic groups. Approximately 11.000 alien species recorded in Europe are listed, and fact sheets for 100 of the most invasive alien species are included, each with a distribution map and colour illustration. The book is complemented by a regularly updated internet database providing free additional information. With its highly interdisciplinary approach, DAISIE and its Handbook will be the basis for future scientific investigations as well as management and control of alien invasive species in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a state-of-the-art guide to linguistic fieldwork, reflecting its collaborative nature across the subfields of linguistics and disciplines such as astronomy, anthropology, biology, musicology, and ethnography. Experienced scholars and fieldworkers explain the methods and approaches needed to understand a language in its full cultural context and to document it accessibly and enduringly. They consider the application of new technological approaches to recording and documentation, but never lose sight of the crucial relationship between subject and researcher. The book is timely: an increased awareness of dying languages and vanishing dialects has stimulated the impetus for recording them as well as the funds required to do so. The handbook is an indispensible source, guide, and reference for everyone involved in linguistic and cultural work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an element of fascination which many people feel about geographical maps, because these maps allow fantasies about strange landscapes, other peoples, travels, even adventures. Distribution maps, depicting the area which a plant (or animal) species occupies, would appear to be less romantic, but they are equally able to exercise our imagination, or rather: to stimulate our scientific curiosity. Some distribution patterns are repeated time and time again, although rarely fully identical, and with their study comes the inescapable question: what is it that determines a plant's area of distribution? Almost immediately we find ourselves in the area of ecology, for it is the plant's demands of its environment (climate, soil) which determines where it will be able to grow and where not. However, that is not all there is to it, for species as well as landscapes have their history, and one needs to be informed about the climate and about the distribution of land and sea in the past, for instance, before one can understand present distributions. This aspect of change in space and time (historical plant geography) is possibly the most fascinating part of plant geography. However this atlas, covering a minuscule part of the world, is not meant to be primarily a book of historical plant geography. It is true that a dynamic aspect is very prominent, but this is on the smaller time-scale of man-made changes, which mostly led to impoverishments.
