Book excerpt: There is a paradoxical relationship between democracy and development in Nigeria. In the twenty years of electoral democracy, poverty, inequality, unemployment, underemployment and insecurity have increased. The hopes of citizens that democracy would lead to improved living standards have been dashed. Social justice and inclusive sustainable development have also been elusive. The economy has remained dependent on 2 primary sectors - agriculture and oil - and low value added services. The aspiration that by 2020, Nigeria would become one of the twenty leading economies in the world has not been achieved, the political elite have captured the state for personal gains and unsurprisingly, Nigeria remains one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

Book Synopsis Fixing Stereotypes...My Way: My Story of Two Decades in Nigeria by : Harbhajan S. Batth
Download or read book Fixing Stereotypes...My Way: My Story of Two Decades in Nigeria written by Harbhajan S. Batth and published by Harbhajan S. Batth. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of stereotyping is commonly used to make things mindlessly easier for us to understand. To categorize individuals and to classify them into groups so we can make sense of the world. We use it in various contexts: "Indians are snobs, arrogant and underendowed, Chinese do not know how to drive, blondes are dumb, Nigerians are scammers etc." We are all guilty of stereotyping at some point in our lives. It may be base on nationality, color of skin, gender, race etc. The categorization of a group of people that we tend to pigeon-hole is based on but limited to our personal experiences, what is showcased and broadcast in media, the stories that we have heard and so on; but we make the mistake to apply it to an entire group.Having spent two decades of my life in West Africa, through this book I intend to challenge the epidemic of stereotyping of Nigeria. There is corruption in Nigeria but don't label the entire country as being corrupt, there is corruption in India too. There are scams in Nigeria but don't label all Nigerian as scammers, there are scams in Hong Kong too. There is drug trafficking in Nigeria but don't label all Nigerian as drug peddlers, there is drug trafficking in Mexico too. What follows in this book shall give a window into the consciousness of the minds housing Nigerian stereotypes. Please be mindful that along the way the filter of typecasts will cloud your vision. Therefore, through my narrative based on first-hand experiences, I invite you to get to know what Nigeria and Nigerians are all about.Remember, oftentimes the reality is far more attractive and superior than we dare to acknowledge.

This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persons living with disabilities (PLWDs) are imbued with inalienable human rights and have talents and potential that would aid in the Nigerian government’s unceasing pursuit of economic development. However, under Nigeria’s Fourth Republic since 1999, implementation of disability laws has been lethargic. In Improving Disability Laws under Nigeria's Fourth Republic: Ten Measured Steps into the Future, Philip C. Aka and Joseph Abiodun Balogun explore measures for improving the capacity of the Nigerian national government to implement regional and global treaties related to disability that are human rights-centric. They emphasize the need for a human rights focus and for the Nigerian government to implement laws that support the potential of PLWDs, including their contributions to socioeconomic development.

Book Synopsis Young People, Violence and Strategic Interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Kammila Naidoo
Download or read book Young People, Violence and Strategic Interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Kammila Naidoo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume offers a rich collection of up-to-date research and critical scholarship from various African institutions on incidents of youth violence, intervention and prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. It integrates thinking, evidence, responses, and debates relating to this topic, laying the basis for fresh insights and innovative strategies. The chapters capture a spectrum of pertinent issues such as economic hardship, lockdowns, sexual and reproductive health, pregnancy, online sexual harassment, xenophobic violence, and micro-aggressions in school contexts, and present guidelines on how countries might learn from successful interventions recently implemented. They explore young people’s access to familial and community resources, state-sponsored initiatives, peer counselling, youth-friendly services, and other relevant structures. Thus, among other things, this volume stimulates further debate on what is driving violence in different African contexts—specifically, how intersectional identities create vulnerabilities to violence—and influences ways of dealing with the issue. This interdisciplinary and cross-cutting volume serves as a vital resource for experts at universities, in international organisations, civil society groups and intergovernmental organisations who wish to both analyse and take action to address and prevent the type of violence that currently afflicts young people sub-Saharan Africa today.

Book excerpt: I am an American Soldier, well trained, educated, nurtured and raised to be honest, to reduce waste, to do every project successfully at less cost and with military discipline and precision, to do what is right, legally and morally, and to unite and treat everyone, men and women, equally, fairly and justly. I am a Nigerian first and foremost. I am also an American citizen. I was born and raised in Ugborodo Village (where Chevron exploits crude oil), Delta State of Nigeria. I am the best Candidate for the Presidency of Nigeria in 2015 because I have a vision to rescue Nigeria "s economy, by investing heavily in science and technology with our oil money, establishing new universities, the equivalent of Harvard, Yale, MIT and Oxford or better, in the rural areas of Nigeria, to pull people from the congested cities to a more siren, natural environment in the rural areas, to establish a state-of-the-art science laboratory attached to these new universities in the rural areas, establish farm and manufacturing plant to be attached to every university in Nigeria, because everything taught in the new Nigerian schools, colleges and universities must have real life applications to the students, and most important, to establish a Federal and State agencies for the protection of the environment, from pollution and damage to our ecology and our environment, with strict enforcement and punitive measures for violators, because my leadership is going to protect Nigeria "s fresh water (both underground water, surface water, etc), and establish beautiful National Parks all over the new Nigeria and under my leadership in the new Nigeria, the government is going to invest heavily in fresh water (as the next equivalent of crude oil) and export it to countries all over the world, as a major source of revenue. Also, by providing free education, the equivalent of the education at Harvard and Oxford universities, or better, for all Nigerians to get a professional degree or skill and to get free monthly allowance of $100-$500, plus free feeding and accommodations for all the students while in the university (and a lump sum of three million naira to the graduates in the New Nigeria to settle down), to share the oil wealth with all Nigerians by giving out grants of $2,500 to $6,500 to all Nigerians who cannot attend the university, to start a business and become self-reliant, to provide for all Nigerians with the oil wealth by giving monthly allowance of $100-$500 to all disabled people and all old people of 65 years and above with no source of income, to invest heavily in science, technology, agriculture, infrastructures, eliminate crime almost to zero level, by making everyone in the new Nigeria well educated and well taken care of financially, and placing so much emphasis on integrity, morality and ethics (that is, doing only what is excellent, doing what is right, legally and morally) and thereafter bring American big corporations, Chinese corporations and European corporations to outsource into Nigeria "s economy with friendly rules and without any tax if they commit to help our economy, to develop the Nigerian economy to be on the same level with the United States in about four years with the help of Nigerians and with the help of some of the best engineers and scientists in the United States Army (where I am a member) and/or in the United States society, and thereby making Nigeria and the United States of America have unbreakable bonds, economically, politically, socially and otherwise.
