Book Synopsis Government Confronts Culture by : Bruce Fuller
Download or read book Government Confronts Culture written by Bruce Fuller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitional societies—struggling to build democratic institutions and new political traditions—are faced with a painful dilemma. How can Government become strong and effective, building a common good that unites disparate ethnic and class groups, while simultaneously nurturing democratic social rules at the grassroots? Professor Fuller brings this issue to light in the contentious, multicultural setting of Southern Africa. Post-apartheid states, like South Africa and Namibia, are pushing hard to raise school quality, reduce family poverty, and equalize gender relations inside villages and townships. But will democratic participation blossom at the grassroots as long as strong central states—so necessary for defining the common good—push universal policies onto diverse local communities? This book builds from a decade of family surveys and qualitative village studies led by Professor Fuller at Harvard University and African colleagues inside Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beyond Inequalities series presents the situation of women and men in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as a region, and in each member country; and reviews the roles and responsibilities, access to and control over resources, decision-making powers, needs and constraints of women vis-a-vis men. The series is forward looking, based on an assessment that inequalities are now generally acknowledged as an impediment to development and economic growth in most countries and regions of the world. The twelve country profiles document and analyse information along themes drawn from the Critical Areas of Concern identified in the Beijing Platform for Action and derived from what the countries of the region consider to be priorities. Each profile is in three parts: Situation Analysis, Policies and Programmes, and the Way Forward, and each has references, bibliography, appendices, and illustrative tables, figures and boxes.

Book Synopsis As Long as They Dont Bury Me Here by : Inge Tvedten
Download or read book As Long as They Dont Bury Me Here written by Inge Tvedten and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of poor Southern Africans live in poverty-stricken urban slums or shantytowns. Focusing on four shantytowns in the northern Namibian town of Oshakati, this book analyses the coping strategies of the poorest sections of such populations. The study is based on fieldwork conducted intermittently during a period of ten years. It combines theories of political, economic and cultural structuration, and of the material and cultural basis for social relations of inclusion and exclusion as practise. The poorest shanty dwellers are marginalised or excluded from vital urban and rural relationships and forced into social relations of poverty amongst themselves. Having experienced long-term processes of impoverishment, the very poorest and most destitute in the shantytowns tend to give up improving their lives and act in ways that further undermine their position.
Download or read book Opting Out written by Joanna Davidson and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women around the world are opting out of marriage. Through nuanced ethnographic accounts of the ways that women are moving the needle on marital norms and practices, Opting Out reveals the conditions that make this widespread phenomenon possible in places where marriage has long been obligatory. Each chapter invites readers into the lives of particular women and the changing circumstances in which these lives unfold - sometimes painfully, sometimes humorously, and always unexpectedly. Taken together, the essays in this volume prompt the following questions: Why is marriage so consistently disappointing for women? When the rewards of economic stability and the social status that marriage confers are troubled, does marriage offer women anything compelling at all? Across diverse geographic contexts in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, this book offers sensitive and powerful portrayals of women as they escape or reshape marriage into a more rewarding arrangement.
