Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeding Beef Cattle in Alabama Among the facts of importance demonstrated in this bulletin are (1) the outstanding value of a ration of cottonseed meal and cotton seed hulls as a standard beef-making ration in Alabama when fed in winter; (2) the small necessity for shelter for beef cattle in Alabama; and (3) the great importance of the use of pasture for cattle when fed a summer ration of cottonseed cake. The authors have Opened Up an additional field for the use of pasture by their investigations of the relative value of Short and long period feeding on summer pasture. In this connection I take the Opportunity again to point out the importance of these investigations not only to Alabama and other parts of the South but to the entire country as well. This work is laying the foundation for rational and profitable beef production under southern conditions and will grow in in uence with the advance of the boll weevil and the eradication of the Texas-fever cattle tick. In this respect it will be worth far more to the South than the entire amount of the appropriation which makes it possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fattening Cattle in Alabama The buying of commercial feeds to use for wintering stock cattle has been practiced to a certain extent, though it is far. More common in the South to turn the cattle loose on the range and let them take care of themselves the best they can during the winter. Cattle treated in this manner always become very thin before spring, and some lo'sses occur. A few of the better stock'men, who handle their mature cattle in this manner, sometimes drive up the thinnest of the cattle during the latter part of the winter and give them some feed until grass comes in the spring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeding Beef Cattle Fig. 1. - The ratio between cattle and corn prices during the 12 years 1910-1921, inclusive, was highest in February. 1913, when the value of good beef steers at Chicago per 100 pounds equaled that of bushels of corn. The ratio was lowest in November, 1917, when 100 pounds of live cattle had a value equal to 5 bushels of corn. In general, 10 to 14 bushels of corn have a value equal to 100 pounds of cattle. In 1921 corn was cheap compared with cattle, 100 pounds of cattle equaling about 15 bushels of corn. Note that the scale of the graph has not been carried down to zero. - Graph by Bureau of Agricultural Economics, U. S. Dept. Agriculture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Attening Calves in Alabama: Investigations in Cooperation With the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station The farmer who has as many as 30 breeding cows on his farm should make it a rule to fatten their offspring himself; he can Seldom afford to sell the calves to the professional feeder. The feeder usually makes money on the process of fattening, and the man who raises calves in sufficient numbers Should keep this extra profit at home. Furthermore, the farmer who has from 8 to 12 calves or steers ready for the feed lot will usually find it profitable to buy a sufficient number of feeders to complete the load, and he can then finish all of them on his own farm. There are many ways Of disposing of beef calves or cattle, and the farmer Should be watchful and avoid methods by which money might be lost. It is possible to raise beef cattle properly and by selling them improperly to lose money on the business, in just the same way that it is possible to raise good apples, potatoes, and peaches and lose money on them when the marketing part of the business is not studied and given proper attention. When beef cattle are bred, fed, and marketed in a scientific and businesslike manner, satisfactory profits should be realized. This is proved by the experience of good cattle men, and by the cooperative experimental work between the Bureau of Animal Industry and the Alabama Experiment Station. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Tick Eradication on the Cattle Industry of the South The more progressive farmers in sections where the cattle tick has been eradicated have purchased good bulls to use in grading up their herds. The result has been wonderful. High-grade cows, produc ing deep, broad, blocky calves that mature into '800 to 900 pound steers at 2 years old have now replaced the small, cheap scrubs that were formerly on the farm. Scrub calves that were formerly worth from $4 to $7 at 12 months of age are supplanted by the grade beef calves that weigh 450 to 600 pounds at a year old and sell 'for $15 to $30 a head. Such grade calves have been marketed for the last three years by the Bureau of Animal Industry in the Alabama cattle-feed ing experiments at prices ranging from $25 to $36 a head when fattened before being put upon the market.1 Good profits were made on raising and feeding them. Book excerpt: Mad Cow U.S.A. shatters the false belief that the government and food industry would never let it happen here. Even as tens of thousands of cows died in Britain, the government denied the risk to human beings. Knowing the similar risk in the U.S., government and industry have managed a successful public relations offensive to keep Americans in the dark. Rampton and Stauber expose, for the first time, the deadly game of "dementia roulette" being played with our food supply.
