When such sources are used as a point isotropic, secondary standard, inaccuracies occur due to the following reasons: (1) The neutron output is not isotropic, (2) the neutron output increases with time due to the build-up of Americium-241, resulting from the impurity of Plutonium-241, (3) the output spectrum is continuous from approximately 0.5 MeV to 10 MeV, (4) gamma rays exceed the number of neutrons emitted from the source. This report (1) presents the angular distribution of the neutron output of an 80 gram (4.81 curie) Plutonium-Beryllium neutron source, (2) shows that the increase in neutron output, due to the build-up of Americium-241 is 5.3 percent for a period of 43 months, (3) presents the neutron and gamma ray spectral distribution and intensity, (4) shows a neutron to gamma ray intensity ratio of 0.61:1 and a neutron to gamma ray dose (first collision-rads tissue) ratio of 9.36:1, (5) shows that a correction factor of 6.6 percent is required when the source is used as a point isotropic source of neutrons. Neutron spectra measurements by threshold foil techniques indicated practically no change in the fast-neutron spectrum above 2.5 Mev in BeO. Thus, beryllium appears to lie in the transition region between the very light elements that harden a fission spectrum and the heavier elements that soften it. The ratio of fast-neutron fluxes below and above 2.5 Mev increased rapidly with distance through the BeO. Information indicated that the flux peaked at around 1.5 to 2.5 Mev. In this energy range the scattering cross section of beryllium goes through a minimum. Fast neutron dose measurements through BeO were compared with those calculated by the moments method. The removal cross section for BeO was determined from fast-neutron dose rates measured in the water behind the slabs. Gamma dose rates were measured through and be hind the BeO slabs with a carbon chamber. The gamma dose rate decreased with a relaxation length of about 11 cm near the source. The relaxation length increased with distance through BeO, indicating spectrum hardening. Gamma spectra were measured at intervals behind BeO slabs with a collimated sodium icdide crystal. The 6.8 and 3.41 Mev beryllium capture gamma rays became dominant as the distance through the BeO increased. Thermal flux was measured through and behind the BeO with both a fission chamber and gold foils. Thermal flux distributions for these tests were calculated by a multilevel diffusion code. The calculations differ from the experiment at large penetration distances through BeO. (auth).

It involves circulating a liquid with dissolved chemicals between a localized neutron field and a remote area where neutron-induced radioactivities are measured continuously. This approach employs reactions which generate relatively short-lived radioactive byproducts. Sensitivity to the neutron energy spectrum is achieved by choosing several reactions with differing thresholds. Neutron field strengths and their time variations can be derived from experimental data using the known radioactive-decay properties, cross sections, detector efficiencies, liquid flow rates and composition of the liquid. The concept has been demonstrated by measurements which utilized an aqueous solution of yttrium chloride hexahydrate, a 14-MeV neutron generator and Ge gamma-ray detectors. The 16O(n, p)16N, 37Cl(n, p)37S and 89Y(n, n(prime)){sup 89m}Y activation reactions served as dosimeters.
