Download or read book Exporting Japan written by Toake Endoh and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exporting Japan examines the domestic origins of the Japanese government's policies to promote the emigration of approximately three hundred thousand native Japanese citizens to Latin America between the 1890s and the 1960s. This imperialist policy, spanning two world wars and encompassing both the pre-World War II authoritarian government and the postwar conservative regime, reveals strategic efforts by the Japanese state to control its populace while building an expansive nation beyond its territorial borders. Toake Endoh compellingly argues that Japan's emigration policy embodied the state's anxieties over domestic political stability and its intention to remove marginalized and radicalized social groups by relocating them abroad. Documenting the disproportionate focus of the southwest region of Japan as a source of emigrants, Endoh considers the state's motivations in formulating emigration policies that selected certain elements of the Japanese population for "export." She also recounts the situations migrants encountered once they reached Latin America, where they were often met with distrust and violence in the "yellow scare" of the pre-World War II period.

Book Synopsis Supply Pressure and the Export-Import Performance in the Japan-U.S. Bilateral Trade by : Yusuke Onitsuka
Download or read book Supply Pressure and the Export-Import Performance in the Japan-U.S. Bilateral Trade written by Yusuke Onitsuka and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1994-05-01 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper examines the effects of the supply pressure of the exports in the Japan-U.S. bilateral trade. A simultaneous equation approach with a Almon lag structure is adopted. Two factors of supply pressure, i.e., full-employment capacity and inventory are specified, and positively-sloped export supply functions with these two shift factors are successfully estimated. While capacity is positively correlated with exports, the inventory is often negatively correlated. It is also shown that export supply pressure is much stronger in Japan’s exports than in the U.S. exports, and that supply pressure often affects exports with a lag structure spreading over twelve quarters.

Book Synopsis Japan and Protection by : Syed Javed Maswood
Download or read book Japan and Protection written by Syed Javed Maswood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s, the extent of Japanese export penetration into other Western economies, particularly the USA, became a matter of international concern. There were demands for Japan to reciprocate on imports, for the Japanese market to be 'opened up' and, by some people, for sanctions or a trade war if the Japanese did not respond. This book, first published in 1989, examines the growth of protectionist sentiment and the Japanese response to it. It examines in detail the debates within Japan and discusses the measures which the Japanese took, including the voluntary export restraint measure in the motor sector. It concludes that, broadly, the Japanese did indeed respond to world demands for their market to be opened up but that successful exporting to Japan depended equally on efforts by Western companies to service that market, which they were slow to do.

Book Synopsis Exporting Japanese Aesthetics by : Tets Kimura
Download or read book Exporting Japanese Aesthetics written by Tets Kimura and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exporting Japanese Aesthetics brings together historical and contemporary case studies addressing the evolution of international impacts and influences of Japanese culture and aesthetics. The volume draws on a wide range of examples from a multidisciplinary team of scholars exploring transnational, regional and global contexts. Studies include the impact of traditional Japanese theatre and art through to the global popularity of contemporary anime and manga. Under the banner of soft power or Cool Japan, cultural commodities that originate in Japan have manifested new meanings outside Japan. By (re)mapping meanings of selected Japanese cultural forms, this volume offers an in-depth examination of how various aspects of Japanese aesthetics have evolved as exportable commodities, the motivations behind this diffusion, and the extent to which the process of diffusion has been the result of strategic planning. Each chapter presents a case study that explores perspectives that situate Japanese aesthetics within a wide-ranging field of inquiry including performance, tourism, and visual arts, as well as providing historical contexts. The importance of interrogating the export of Japanese aesthetics is validated at the highest levels of government, which formed the Office of Cool Japan in 2010, and which perhaps originated in the 19th century at governmentally endorsed cultural courts at world fairs. Increased international consumption of contemporary Japanese culture provides a much needed boost to Japans weakening economy. The case studies are timely and topical. As host of the 2020/2021 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2025 Osaka Expo, Cool Japan will be under special scrutiny.

Book Synopsis Japan out of the Lost Decade by : Mr.Kazuo Ogawa
Download or read book Japan out of the Lost Decade written by Mr.Kazuo Ogawa and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A surge of exports in the 2000s helped Japan exit the severe decade-long stagnation known as the lost decade. Using panel data of Japanese exporting firms, we examine the sources of the export surge during this period. One view argues that the so-called "divine wind" or exogenous external demand boosted Japanese exports. The other view emphasizes the role of supply factors such as productivity gains, materialized after long-fought restructuring efforts during the lost decade. Estimating the firm-level export function allows us to assess the relative importance of these demand and supply factors. Evidence shows that firms' efforts were more important than the divine wind.
