Book excerpt: "In order to develop design guidelines for optimum operations of internal combustion engines fueled with alternative fuels, a comprehensive understanding combustion behavior and the pollutant formation inside the cylinder are needed. The first part of this thesis aimed to numerically study the engine performance and in-cylinder pollutant formation in a spark ignition engine fueled with hydrogen. Advanced simulations were performed using multi- dimensional software AVL FIRE coupled with CHEMKIN. The detailed chemical reactions with 29 steps of hydrogen oxidation with additional nitrogen oxidation reactions were also employed. Formation rates of nitrogen oxides (NO[subscript x]) within the engine were accurately predicted using the extended Zeldovich mechanism with parameters adjusted for a carbon-free fuel. The computational results were first validated against experimental results with different equivalence ratios and then employed to examine a spark-ignition engine fueled with hydrogen under different operating conditions. Strategies that could have significant effects on the engine performance and emissions, such as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and ignition timing were also investigated. Furthermore, the maximization of engine power and minimization of NO[subscript x] emissions were considered as conflicting objectives for preliminary optimization. Finally, a skeletal reaction mechanism was developed to include the reaction kinetics of diesel and hydrogen fuel mixtures to investigate in-cylinder combustion processes of such a dual fuel compression-ignition engine. The model was then employed to examine the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and N2 dilution on NO[subscript x] emissions"--Abstract, page iv.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is contradictory literature about whether hydrogen (H2) supplementation may increase or decrease the likelihood of knock in spark ignition (SI) engines. Such contradictory literature may correlate to the fast laminar flame speed property of H2, which increases the burning rate. Faster combustion allows less time for end-gas autoignition to occur, but also increases the end-gas pressure and temperature, which may reduce the time required for autoignition. Firstly, via experiments, this thesis demonstrates that "knocking cycles are the cycles with faster burning rate when they are compared with normal cycles". Then, via simulations, it is verified that faster combustion promotes knock. Secondly, the thesis shows that H2 supplementation practically promotes knock in an experimental manner. This implies that the knock promotion effects of the fast laminar flame speed and the lower heat capacity of H2 dominate the knock suppression effect of the high research octane number rating. Therefore, from the knock perspective, H2 is not an ideal supplement for gasoline SI engines. Thirdly, an alternative use of H2 supplementation has been studied, i.e. for idle condition. In this part, both performance and emissions are studied. In performance, it is demonstrated that H2 supplementation reduces the cycle-to-cycle variation by increasing the burning rate. Net indicated efficiency, as well as fuel economy, are significantly improved with H2 supplementation. In emissions, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and unburned hydrocarbon are greatly reduced with H2 supplementation. On the other hand, due to the high adiabatic flame temperature of H2, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions are increased. However, this is less important as the idle NOx emissions are very small relative to the normal operation condition.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present study considers combustion of hydrogen in IC engines. In general, the work focuses on simulating the engine performance and emissions at different operation parameters, and using optimization techniques. Task I work deals with the engine performance and emissions of a single cylinder spark-ignition (SI) engine fueled by hydrogen. The engine was simulated at different equivalence ratios, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and ignition timing. The results indicate that NOx emissions, engine power, and efficiency are reduced by increasing EGR level, and increased with increasing equivalence ratio and advanced ignition timing. The best operating conditions for hydrogen engines were obtained by solving the multi-objective problem of maximizing engine power and efficiency while minimizing the NOx. Task II deals with the engine performance and emissions of dual-fuel CI engines fueled by a hydrogen/diesel mixture. The engine was simulated under conditions of various hydrogen levels (%) by energy, diesel injection timing, and EGR levels (%). More hydrogen present inside the engine cylinder led to lower soot emissions, higher thermal efficiency, and higher NOx emissions. Ignition timing delayed as the hydrogen rate increased, due to a delay in OH radical formation. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) method and diesel injection timing were considered as well, due to their potential effects on the engine outputs. To obtain the best possible maximum efficiency along with lower NOx and soot emissions, optimization methods in (Task III) for the operating parameters were considered. Multi-objective problem with conflicting objectives was solved by using regression analysis, artificial neural networks, and genetic algorithms"--Abstract, page iv.
