Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every Teacher's Problems Books dealing with the technic of teaching have almost invariably emphasized the importance of the inductive method. These same books have commonly proposed certain principles based upon psychology, and have sought to indicate the validity of these generalizations by more or less pertinent illustrations; but they have been almost wholly deductive in their method of dealing with the principles of teaching. The author of this book has em ployed the inductive method in his discussion of every teacher's problems. Book excerpt: Teacher's Manual for First-Year Mathematics is a book written by George William Myers, a Professor of the Teaching of Mathematics and Astronomy at the University of Chicago. The book is intended as a teaching manual for teachers instructing their students using a textbook called First Year Mathematics. Myers' book is intended as a companion piece to the textbook First Year Mathematics, released by the same publishing company, The University of Chicago Press. The book makes effort to assist the teacher by providing them with a detailed how-to regarding teaching the specific problems presented in the textbook. Teacher's Manual is presented in chapters, each corresponding to a chapter in First Year Mathematics. Specific references are made to page numbers and problems presented in the textbook. In total, the book contains fourteen different chapters. Teacher's Manual for First-Tear Mathematics can only be used in conjunction with the appropriate textbook. Without access to First Year Mathematics, the book is of no use. It is however an excellent companion piece to the textbook, and those able to access the original textbook will surely find this text to be highly beneficial. While a well-written teacher's manual, George William Myers' book assumes the reader has access to the original textbook. If you are interested in making use of this manual, do ensure that you are also able to access First Year Mathematics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Talks to Teachers Twenty Talks to Teachers is an epitome of some of the discussions used by the author in teachers' institutes. It is not a profound book. It was not intended to be. Its object is to call the attention of young teachers to some of the every day conditions and problems which they must solve for themselves. The average term of service of teachers is little over three years, hence the great mass of teachers are young in service. A number of these have expressed themselves as being pleased with the discussions in institutes, especially so because they were plain homely talks rather than learned discussions. Perhaps these and others may appreciate them as well in the printed form. No one is expected to agree with all that is said. If the topics are suggestive to young teachers, if the book helps them over a few of the hard places, if it sets them thinking on some topics, if the advice that is given proves sound, and if it should encourage a few to deeper study, better preparation and broader reading, it will have done well. Trusting that it may form the basis of profitable discussions in teachers' institutes and meetings it is submitted to the great body of young teachers whose zeal, enthusiasm and optimism, has done so much in the past, is doing yet, and will continue to do so much for our schools and out of whose work must grow in the future a worthy profession of teaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Teachers It may help the reader to interpret the doctrines embodied in the following essays if he has before him a brief synopsis of the writers opinions on the education of teachers. Every man who has patiently studied the problems of education has formed for himself, little by little, an educational creed, or confession of faith; and it is well on such an occasion as the writing of a book to throw into articulate form the articles of ones faith or belief as they relate to the field of thought traversed by writer and reader. Teaching is a spiritual art and classifies with music, poetry and oratory, rather than with the mechanic arts, the arts that deal with matter and its fixed and uniform relations. As teaching has to do with spirit, methods of teaching should not be fixed and invariable, but flexible and fluid, adapted to the modes and phases of variable spirit. In all intelligent and effective teaching, principles, rather than rules, should be held at a premium. Versatile teaching will draw its methods from prolific principles and will reflect the personality of the teacher who uses them. When methods become uniform, teaching becomes mechanical and wooden. Teachers should be educated rather than trained, education pointing to versatility and freedom, training to uniformity and mechanism. A teachers education should be of the liberal type. Book excerpt: In the past, correct spelling, the multiplication tables, the names of the state capitals and the American presidents were basics that all children were taught in school. Today, many children graduate without this essential knowledge. Most curricula today follow a haphazard sampling of topics with a focus on political correctness instead of teaching students how to study. Leigh Bortins, a leading figure in the homeschooling community, is having none of it. She believes that there are core areas of knowledge that are essential to master. Without knowing the multiplication tables, children can't advance to algebra. Without mastery of grammar, students will have difficulty expressing themselves. Without these essential building blocks of knowledge, students may remember information but they will never possess a broad and deep understanding of how the world works. In The Core, Bortins gives parents the tools and methodology to implement a rigorous, thorough, and broad curriculum based on the classical model, including: - Rote memorization to cement knowledge - Systematic learning of geography, historical facts, and timelines - Reading the great books and seminal historical documents instead of adaptations and abridged editions - Rigorous training in math and the natural sciences

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School Problem It must be evident to all thoughtful persons that the high school stands upon the threshold of a larger career of effectiveness. The utterances in favor of socializing and vitalizing high-school work are prophetic. The changing conditions of life, both social and economic, seem to call for a readjustment in our high-school procedure. This call will be more insistent as time goes on, and the school which fails to heed the call will find itself relegated to a position of subordinate importance as a determining factor in social and economic affairs. Conceding, to the utmost, the influence of colleges of education and normal schools in the way of inculcating better methods of teaching, there still remains much for high-school teachers, themselves, to do in the way of taking a generous survey of their work so as to give direction and potency to civilization. Tradition, alone, will not avail. The high school should lead, not follow; but this high function will not be attained until it can preview civilization and prepare the way. This privilege appertains to each individual teacher, nor can this function be either abrogated or delegated. The teaching of beginning reading, the standards to be maintained in erecting school buildings and in their equipment, the organization of the supervisory and administrative staff, the control of public schools by a board of education that operates under a state law all are important in the equipment of a teacher charged with the education of a child in the first grade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pedagogical Pep: A Book of Help and Inspiration for Teachers The aim of Pedagogical Pep is to help and inspire the school teachers of America. To this end an open invitation was extended to the readers of Normal Instructor-Primary Plans to enter, in a prize contest, articles that would be of assistance and inspiration to their fellow teachers. Teachers from every state in the Union, as well as from our territorial possessions and a few foreign countries, responded to our invitation with articles telling of various phases of their experience in school work. The response was both enthusiastic and generous. More than two thousand manuscripts were submitted for the contest, out of which one hundred and twenty-nine prize articles have been chosen to make Pedagogical Pep. The articles in this book deal with the teaching of school subjects, with the children, with the community, and with the schoolroom itself. The selection of each article was based upon its educational value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to the National Arithmetic: Containing Full Solutions to Nearly All the Problems; Designed for the Use of Teachers and Private Students It was the original intention of the author to give, in the Key, merely a series of brief hints upon the solutions of the more difficult problems. Be'was led to modify this plan and to issue the work in its present form, chiefly from the consideration that as there are in the country many young persons who, from various causes, are unable to avail themselves of the advice and assistance of a teacher, it would be a great boon to these to have access to a book to which they might refer with the certainty of having every doubt removed as to the correctness of their work and methods of solution.
