Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Progress: Stories of Sucessful Americans This book is planned to give as general a view of recent American achievement as possible without becoming of unwieldy size. Invention, discovery and exploration, art, music, philanthropy, kindness to animals, industrial success, aviation, pure and applied science, are all represented. To select the names of the men and women of achievement has not been easy. Some thirty have been carefully chosen with the aim of introducing those whose work reached its consummation within the last half-century; but in a few instances men have been included whose inventions have been greatly developed in recent years, even though by other hands. In making the selection a number of children's librarians have been consulted, with the wish to include as many as possible of the people about whom children come to them for information. There is seldom difficulty in finding biographies of authors, soldiers, or statesmen. For this reason such names have been omitted from this book. The qualities which led these men and women to success have been brought well to the front; and while financial rewards have often been mentioned, success is reckoned in value to the world, rather than in money acquired by the individual. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Greco-Roman civilisation is as exciting and innovative today as it has ever been. This intriguing collection of essays by contemporary classicists reveals new discoveries, new interpretations and new ways of exploring the experiences of the ancient world. Through one and a half millennia of literature, politics, philosophy, law, religion and art, the classical world formed the origin of western culture and thought. This book emphasises the many ways in which it continues to engage with contemporary life. Offering a wide variety of authorial style, the chapters range in subject matter from contemporary poets' exploitation of Greek and Latin authors, via newly discovered literary texts and art works, to modern arguments about ancient democracy and slavery, and close readings of the great poets and philosophers of antiquity. This engaging book reflects the current rejuvenation of classical studies and will fascinate anyone with an interest in western history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Modern Progress, 1920: With a Preliminary Survey of Earlier Progress Mr Modem History, of eighteen years ago, and its successor, The Modem World, taught insistently and, for long in rather lonely fashion, the perils in Prussian militarism and autocracy. In 1902, when worship of Bismarckian "efficiency" was at its height in America and England, after presenting details, I ventured to sum up this matter thus (Modem History, page 477): The story of the making of Germany shows plainly enough that the process was one not merely of "blood and iron" but also of fraud and falsehood. It is hard to tell the story of such gigantic and successful audacity and craft without seeming to glorify it... Bismarck's success has tended too, probably, to lower the tone of international morality; and his policy of fraud and violence has left to Germany a legacy of burning questions which will grieve it long. The rule of the drill-sergeant and of the police officer, the hostility to the Empire felt by the Danes of Sleswig and the French of Alsace-Lorraine, the bitter jealousy between Prussia and Bavaria, and the immense armies of all Europe are among the results of his policy. It 18 too early yet to say that that policy is truly victorious. Because of this anti-Prussianism, the book suffered heavily in the years before the war from both open and secret pro-German attacks. But when the war came, no hurried revision was necessary to justify the volume to American schools. Nor is any change of attitude on these matters needed now. In the golden age Dike or Astraea wandered about the earth freely; in the silver age her visits became fewer, and in the brazen age she set out for heaven and became the constellation Virgo. Perhaps Horace had read the lament of the goddess: 'what a race the golden Sires have left - worse than their fathers and your offspring will be baser still.' In the third century after Christ, when civilization was really crumbling, Pagans and Christians join in a chorus of woe. On the other side, the triumphs of man over nature are celebrated by the great tragedians, and the Introduction to the First Book of Thucydides sketches the past history of Greece in the spirit of the nineteenth century. Lucretius has delighted our anthropologists by his brilliant and by no means idealized description of savage life, and it is to him that we owe the blessed word Progress in its modern sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways of Progress About this conviction centre much of our public thought, most of our public discussion, nearly all of our public action. The methods suggested or adopted may be mistaken; may, and indeed often do, lead in the wrong direction. But the aspiration is true and it is constant. It searches always among policies, devices, inventions and systems for the few broad ways that lead to a real advance all along the line. This is the ancient method of natural selection, by which men and nations have improved upon their own past. It teaches both by precept and example. If the example is good the lesson is uplifting. The lives of good men and women are practical object lessons; and the history of such lives is a rich inheritance to the world. It constitutes the chief part of a nations wealth. The nineteenth century was a record-breaking period, in the way of producing great men and women. Men and women who have distinguished themselves by their wise words and noble deeds. It was the author's good fortune to be born in the early part of that century, and to live his manhood life during the last half of it, and to enjoy the personal acquaintance of some of those great souls who have been prominent actors in the drama of progress. In this book the author gives his impressions of those headlights of humanity, in the form of brief biographical sketches and personal reminiscences. Our life is a steady, ceaseless progress toward an um seen goal. What is the haven toward which you are making? What is the end of life toward which you are drifting or steering? Before we make up our minds how to steer from day to day, we must know where we are going in the long run. Then we can shape our course to fit our purpose. We can change our direction to avoid obstacles and dangers. If we keep the thought of our de sired haven clearly before us, all the other points can be more easily and wisely settled. We ought to know what it is that we really want to do in the world. No ship that sails the sea is as free to make for her port as you are to seek the haven that your inmost soul desires. There are really only four great practical ends for which men and women can work in this world, Pleasure, Wealth, Fame, and Usefulness. We owe it to ourselves to consider them carefully, and to make up our minds which is to be our chief object in life.
