A Supply Chain (SC) can be regarded as a hybrid between a market relationship and a hierarchical organization and as such requires specific tools to support the efficient planning and execution of the order fulfillment proc ess. Software vendors have developed so called Advanced Planning Systems (APS) to overcome deficiencies of traditional Enterprise Resource Planning systems and to better support the planning functions needed in SCM. However, APS are based on the principles of hierarchical planning which are well-suited for intra organizational SCs but fall short when non-hierarchical collaboration between partners (companies) is needed. This is particularly true when a buyer and a sup plier have to align their medium term order and supply plans.

However, the organizational structures are more and more characterized by networks containing equal partners which restricts the application of coordination mechanisms. Collaborative planning aims at covering the resulting requirements and gains more and more attention in research and practice. Within these approaches, the companies' shared decision-space is collaboratively explored and evaluated by means of formally specified interaction processes which are connected to local planning models. These procedures allow to find a mutually agreed and beneficial planning solutions which improve the supply chain's overall performance. Within this domain, a limited degree of practical implementations has been identified. Thus, a large potential for supporting supply chain planners and IT-departments in the selection, customization, and implementation of suitable and promising coordination mechanisms exists. Addressing these potentials, as part of his doctoral studies Peer Kuppers developed the Framework for Intelligent Supply Chain Collaboration (FRISCO). It contains methods and tools for designing and modelling collaborative planning concepts as well as an agent-based simulation environment for the use case-driven and quantitative evaluation of their coordination performance. The framework's utility has been shown in various scenarios from different industries which emphasizes its generalizability. German description: Um dem Leistungsdruck einer globalisierten Wirtschaft begegnen zu konnen, streben Unternehmen verbesserte Koordination zur Steigerung der Supply Chain-Effizienz bzw. -Effektivitat an. Jedoch weisen heutige Organisationsstrukturen, die vielfach durch Netzwerke mit teilweise gleichberechtigten Partnerschaften gekennzeichnet sind, Restriktionen fur Koordinationsmechanismen auf. Die Kollaborative Planung stellt einen Koordinationsansatz dar, der diese Anforderungen berucksichtigt und stetig an Bedeutung in Forschung und Praxis gewinnt. Durch die formelle Spezifikation von Interaktionsprozessen und deren Anbindung an lokale Planungsmodelle wird der Supply Chain-weite Entscheidungsraum kollaborativ durchsucht. So wird - aufgrund der Komplexitat meist IT-basiert - einvernehmliche Koordination erreicht und die Gesamtperformance verbessert.Hinsichtlich dieser Planungskonzepte konnte ein geringer Grad der praktischen Durchdringung und somit grosses Potential zur Unterstutzung von Supply Chain-Planern und IT-Abteilungen in der Auswahl, Anpassung und Implementierung geeigneter Koordinationsmechanismen identifiziert werden. Daher entwickelte Peer Kuppers im Rahmen seiner Promotion das Framework for Intelligent Supply Chain Collaboration (FRISCO). Es enthalt Methoden und Werkzeuge zur Gestaltung und Modellierung Kollaborativer Planungskonzepte sowie eine agentenbasierte Simulationsumgebung zur Bewertung der Koordinationsleistung im Anwendungsfall. Der Nutzen des Frameworks konnte anhand verschiedener Szenarien aus unterschiedlichen Branchen dargestellt und damit dessen Generalisierbarkeit unterstrichen werden.Peer Kuppers, Jahrgang 1981, studierte Technische Informatik an der Technischen Universitat Berlin und Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der Westfalischen Wilhelms-Universitat Munster. Im Anschluss war er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) tatig. Im November 2013 erfolgte die Promotion zum Doktor der Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Seit 2015 arbeitet er als Data Scientist im Bereich Internet of Things. Zuvor war er als IT-Projektmanager in der Luftfahrtindustrie tatig.

The goal of the thesis is to develop an assessment tool that enables supply chain managers to critically evaluate the current state of chain volatility of a product’s supply chain. Building on a systematic literature review and insights from two group exercises with supply chain managers, the thesis develops a conceptualization of the dimensions and sources of supply chain volatility. Based on that, the impact of supply chain volatility sources is assessed by applying a Analytic Hierarchy Process and strategies dealing with the most important sources are developed. Subsequently, the supply chain volatility assessment tool is developed that is based on a performance benchmark among 87 manufacturing firms. Additionally a supply chain volatility management framework is proposed that outlines the main management areas and antecedents of successful supply chain volatility management. Diese Doktorarbeit zielt darauf ab, durch drei einzelne Studien einen Beitrag zur Erforschung von Volatilität in Logistiknetzen zu leisten. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines Bewertungsinstruments, das es Supply Chain Managern ermöglicht, den aktuellen Zustand der Volatilität einer Lieferkette eines Produkts kritisch zu bewerten. Aufbauend auf einer systematischen Literaturrecherche und den Erkenntnissen aus zwei Workshops mit Supply Chain Managern entwickelt die Arbeit eine Konzeptualisierung der Dimensionen und Quellen von Volatilität in Logistiknetzen. Basierend darauf werden die Auswirkungen der Quellen von Volatilität in der Lieferkette durch Anwendung eines analytischen Hierarchieprozesses bewertet und Strategien für den Umgang mit den wichtigsten Quellen entwickelt. Anschließend wird das Tool zur Bewertung der Volatilität in Logistiknetzen entwickelt, das auf einem Performance-Benchmark unter 87 produzierenden Unternehmen basiert.
