Book excerpt: Ancient religions are definitely complex systems of gods, which resist our understanding. Divine names provide fundamental keys to gain access to the multiples ways gods were conceived, characterized, and organized. Among the names given to the gods many of them refer to spaces: cities, landscapes, sanctuaries, houses, cosmic elements. They reflect mental maps which need to be explored in order to gain new knowledge on both the structure of the pantheons and the human agency in the cultic dimension. By considering the intersection between naming and mapping, this book opens up new perspectives on how tradition and innovation, appropriation and creation play a role in the making of polytheistic and monotheistic religions. Far from being confined to sanctuaries, in fact, gods dwell in human environments in multiple ways. They move into imaginary spaces and explore the cosmos. By proposing a new and interdiciplinary angle of approach, which involves texts, images, spatial and archeaeological data, this book sheds light on ritual practices and representations of gods in the whole Mediterranean, from Italy to Mesopotamia, from Greece to North Africa and Egypt. Names and spaces enable to better define, differentiate, and connect gods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines and establishes the sociological relevance of the concept of populism and illuminates the ideological use of sport, leisure, and popular culture in socio-political populist strategies and dynamics. The first part of the book — Themes, Concepts, Theories — sets the scene by reviewing and evaluating populist themes, concepts, and theories and exploring their cultural-historical roots in and application to cultural forms such as mega-sports events, reality television programmes, and the popular music festival. The second part — National Contexts and Settings — examines populist elements of events and regimes in selected cases in South America and Europe: Argentina, Brazil, Greece, Italy, and England. In the third part — Trump Times — the place of sport in the populist ideology and practices of US president Donald Trump is critically examined in analyses of Trump’s authoritarian populism, his Twitter discourse, Lady Gaga at the Super Bowl, and populist strategy on the international stage. The book concludes with a discussion of the strong case for a fuller sociological engagement with the populist dimensions of sport, leisure, and popular cultural forms. Written in a clear and accessible style, this volume will be of interest to sociologists and social scientists beyond those specialising in popular culture and cultural politics of sport and leisure, as the topic of populism and its connection to popular cultural forms and practices has come increasingly into prominence in the contemporary world.

Book excerpt: The Italian love affair with sport is passionate, voracious, all-consuming. It provides a backdrop and a narrative to almost every aspect of daily life in Italy and the distinctively pink-coloured newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport is devoured by almost half a million readers every day. Narrating the history of modern Italy through its national passion for sport, Sport Italia provides a completely new portrayal of one of Europe's most alluring, yet contradictory countries, tracing the highs and lows of Italy's sporting history from its Liberal pioneers through Mussolini and the 1960 Rome Olympics to the Berlusconi era. By interweaving essential themes of Italian history, its politics, society and economy with a history of the passion for sport in the country, Simon Martin tells the story of modern Italy in a fresh and colourful way, illustrating how and why sport is so strongly embedded in both politics and society, and how it is inseparable from the concept of Italian national identity. Showing sport's capacity to both unite and deeply divide, this book reveals a novel and previously unexplored element of the history of a society and its state, which will be an essential read for sports fans, historians and students alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of 12 articles from the December 2021 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. When one thinks of evangelization and missionary life, often one of the first people to spring to mind is St Paul. In our December issue one of our regular contributors Prof. Marc Rastoin from the Pontifical Biblical Institute of Rome looks at the life of St Paul, the apostle par excellence. Continuing his series on the Virtues, Giovanni Cucci looks at Fortitude: A demanding virtue, revealing it is an indispensable virtue for living together. When it is lacking, evils of all kinds flourish, because those who could prevent them fail to take a stand! Andrea Vicini, one of our regular U.S. contributors and another educator, is a moral theologian and bioethicist at Boston College. In Pope Francis, Vaccines and Global Health he reflects on the importance of commitment to health care and identified three significant areas that comprise one solution: traditional health care practice; public health; and global health. Pope Francis’ new motu proprio Traditionis Custodes (“Guardians of Tradition”), addresses necessary changes to the Roman Missal in Unity and Concord in the Use of the Roman Missal: An analysis of ‘Traditionis Custodes’. Francis himself is our guide, explaining in this letter the reasons that led him to pronounce on the use of this liturgical book that for more than thirty years has been in search of peace. Following on from Spiritual Parents, published in the November issue, we have another piece from Miguel Angel Fiorito Spiritual Discernment. Fiorito explains the search for God at every moment is the hinge on which Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s whole doctrine of spiritual discernment turns.

The two exhibitions - which for us mark the start of a dialogue between the new space in Milan designed by Rem Koolhaas and our venue in Venice, in Ca’ Corner della Regina - depitct antiquity as being different from how we customarily think of it: whereby statuary white was color, uniqueness was multiple, and authorship shared."--Page 45.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
