Probably no state in the USA can compete with Louisiana in terms of bird spectacles. Bird density in general is higher here than almost anywhere in the country, and some of the concentrations are stunning. This birdfinding guide will help more people appreciate our state for the special birding area that it is." J. Van Remsen, Jr., Ph. D.

Book excerpt: Design and Operation of heat Exchangers and Their Networks presents a comprehensive and detailed analysis on the thermal design methods for the most common types of heat exchangers, with a focus on their networks, simulation procedures for their operations, and measurement of their thermal performances. The book addresses the fundamental theories and principles of heat transfer performance of heat exchangers and their applications and then applies them to the use of modern computing technology. Topics discussed include cell methods for condensers and evaporators, dispersion models for heat exchangers, experimental methods for the evaluation of heat exchanger performance, and thermal calculation algorithms for multi-stream heat exchangers and heat exchanger networks. - Includes MATLAB codes to illustrate how the technologies and methods discussed can be easily applied and developed - Analyses a range of different models, applications, and case studies in order to reveal more advanced solutions for industrial applications - Maintains a strong focus on the fundamental theories and principles of the heat transfer performance of heat exchangers and their applications for complex flow arrangement

Book excerpt: Policy-making for urban transport and planning of economies in the developing world present major challenges for countries facing rapid urbanisation and rampant motorisation, alongside growing commitments to sustainability. These challenges include: coping with financial deficits, providing for the poor, dealing meaningfully with global warming and energy shortages, addressing traffic congestion and related land use issues, adopting green technologies and adjusting equitably to the impacts of globalisation. This book presents a contemporary analysis of these challenges and new workable responses to the urban transport problems they spawn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STORY: Barry and Grace Enterprise, a couple in their seventies, have two sons; one a thriving two-year-old and the other Arnold, a young man in his thirties who crawls on all fours, insists on a lemon peel in his martini, and is forever misplacing his coloring book. The Enterprises also have a lavish air raid shelter complete with a library of old Our Gang movies and four years' worth of Readers Digest back copies; plus a rather snippy black maid whose feelings have been ruffled by their offer of a separate-but-equal shelter for her. As for Arnold, the Enterprises' concern about him has led to a consultation with Miss Sympathy, a pert, young psychiatric social worker who comes by to do what she can to help straighten him out-and up. She and Arnold are hitting it off rather well when the alert sounds for an air raid drill, and it's down to the shelter for everyone-except that Millie, the maid, has already locked herself in, and the white imperialists out. So Miss Sympathy joins Arnold on the floor (an accepted crisis position) and their increasingly intimate confessions continue to an off-stage obligato by the senior Enterprises. Arnold admits that he has rediscovered the forgotten value of being naughty, and Miss Sympathy concedes that she finds him overpoweringly attractive but what if the all-clear should sound? But it won't. It's broken. That's what Arnold did that was naughty today.

Book excerpt: The era of globalisation brought waves of consolidation in business ownership alongside Leviathon-like state actors. Digital disruption too can leave market power in a relatively small number of hands. In organisational and economic terms, global oligopoly is now a fundamental idea for business and society, which this book explores and analyses. This book focuses on global oligopolies, starting with an analysis of global concentration and profits in all sectors, before moving on to illuminate the geographical spread and global strategic orientation choices and performance outcomes of global oligopoly. Contemporary cooperation modes, such as cross-border M&As and strategic alliances, niche and Emerging Market champion strategies are also analysed in detail to move the reader towards understanding likely future directions for the field. Presenting empirical data on strategies and performance outcomes, the book covers a range of industries to provide practical, research-based guidance for more effective global business strategies and policy perspectives.

Book excerpt: This volume, which gathers contributions presented at the annual conferences of l'Association pour le développement de l'histoire culturelle (ADHC), questions the subjects and boundaries of cultural history in France – with regard to neighboring approaches such as cultural studies, media studies, and gender studies – to elaborate a "social history of representations." Historians, philosophers and sociologists address a large variety of topics and methodological proposals. Definitions, objects and actors, memories and cultural transfers: this book depicts the major questions that underlie the historical debate at the beginning of the 21st century.
