Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The model of English that should be used in classrooms has long been a subject of debate. This book (with an accompanying audio CD) describes selected varieties of World Englishes, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of selecting a particular variety from the point of view of both teachers and learners. It aims to examine and re-evaluate concepts such as 'standard', 'variety', 'native speaker' and 'non-native speaker', and to validate the role played by multilingual and multicultural English language teachers, arguing that context and learner needs should determine the variety to be taught.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of International Communication examines the profound changes that have taken place, and are continuing to take place at an astonishing speed, in international media and communication. Building on the success of previous editions, this book maps out the expansion of media and telecommunications corporations within the macro-economic context of liberalisation, deregulation and privitisation. It then goes on to explore the impact of such growth on audiences in different cultural contexts and from regional, national and international perspectives. Each chapter contains engaging case studies which exemplify the main concepts and arguments.

This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International communication as a field of inquiry is, in fact, not very “internationalized.” Rather, it has been taken as a conceptual extension or empirical application of U.S. communication, and much of the world outside the West has been socialized to adopt truncated versions of Pax Americana’s notion of international communication. At stake is the “subject position” of academic and cultural inquirers: Who gets to ask what kind of questions? It is important to note that the quest to establish universally valid “laws” of human society with little regard for cultural values and variations seems to be running out of steam. Many lines of intellectual development are reckoning with the important dimensions of empathetic understanding and subjective consciousness. In Internationalizing "International Communication," Lee and others argue that we must reject both America-writ-large views of the world and self-defeating mirror images that reject anything American or Western on the grounds of cultural incompatibility or even cultural superiority. The point of departure for internationalizing “international communication” must be precisely the opposite of parochialism – namely, a spirit of cosmopolitanism. Scholars worldwide have a moral responsibility to foster global visions and mutual understanding, which forms, metaphorically, symphonic harmony made of cacophonic sounds.

Book excerpt: New Interchange is the second edition of Interchange, one of the world's most successful English courses for adult and young adult learners at the beginning to intermediate levels. New Interchange incorporates suggestions from students and teachers using the first edition from around the world. It offers more comprehensive grammar presentation and practice, more opportunities to develop listening skills and build fluency, as well as fresh new content in every unit. New Interchange features high-interest topics, a focus on both accuracy and fluency, and a multi-skills syllabus integrating themes, structures, functions, vocabulary, and pronunciation. The underlying philosophy of the course is that language is best learned when used for meaningful communication. New Interchange is written in American English, but reflects the fact that English is the major language of international communication, and is not limited to any one country, region, or culture.

Students learn how to contribute in everyday scenarios and overcome potential communication challenges, with specific advice pertaining to academic interactions, social situations, leisure time, and job opportunities. This text is both unique and highly practical, as its content was assembled by an instructor with over 30 years of teaching international students and is based on international students' points of view, lived experiences, and suggestions. Opening chapters address common intercultural issues in communication, forms of communication, stereotypes, and cultural beliefs about learning. Additional chapters cover couple culture, email etiquette, networking, using technology, acculturation, and public speaking. Students learn about daily conversations and greetings, intercultural friendships, interviewing for jobs in the United States, improving their listening skills, and more. Communication Skills for International Students is an exceptional resource for courses in English as a second language (ESL), intercultural and international communications, mass communication, global and international studies, and international affairs. This text stands out as a useful tool for any international student interested in building their skill set and self-confidence with the English language and everyday communication.
