They are inspired with ideas and techniques for quickly evaluating those ideas to discover solutions that work: they are valuable, usable, feasible and viable. This book is about the idea and reality of "achieving extraordinary results from ordinary people". Empowered is the companion to Inspired. It addresses the other half of the problem of building tech products?how to get the absolute best work from your product teams. However, the book's message applies much more broadly than just to product teams. Inspired was aimed at product managers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empowered Design is about creating the life you are meant to live starting from the inside out. Design is all-encompassing; from creating a passionate plan for life, to your personal space supporting your energy. Let's face it, Designers are like therapists and we are the go-to people for our clients, not only for style but for life advice. Well, it takes hard work and determination to live your best life! Design has been my life for over twenty years, and I realized that designing the life we are meant to live is connected to the space we live in. My book is about creating a passionate plan that will start with figuring out what direction will empower you and not drain you. It's important to understand the difference between the white noise that creates fear, and the fear that tells you that you're on the right track. Fear doesn't scream at you, it whispers most of the time. Everyone is afraid of anything worth doing, but how you react to that fear can be a game changer. One way that I can tell the difference between the two is if I were to imagine I was given the same opportunity that I was afraid of, except this time I was guaranteed that I could not fail. Would you still want to do it? You see, knowing the difference between how your feelings and your body reacts to different situations is at the core of fine tuning your barometer. You can't make the right decisions if you don't know the difference between the feeling of the right road or the wrong road. It seems so simple, but you would be surprised at how much people make decisions that they think are right, but really, they just chose the less scary and easy route. I'm not inventing the wheel, but I am infusing a lot of old world knowledge and common sense with my own stories of how I moved past obstacles, and how I'm still pushing past the obstacles that get in my way. I think that it's really easy to let the experiences in your life define your life. When life gives you obstacles, you need to use them as your own stepping stones. I am a fusion of Interior Design and Energy Design, and so my book will be a fusion of the two, that make up what I call Empowered Design. Now most of us know what Interior Design is, but I'm sure you're wondering what in God's name Energy Design is. And no I'm not referring to "GREEN" or Energy Efficient Design. I refer to Energy Design as the Designing of the emotional and non-physical space that surrounds you or that affects you on a daily basis. It's about taking your emotional pulse so that you can make choices that will build you up, and not bring you down. This calls for self-awareness, where you step away from yourself enough to be the watcher instead of the reactor. I have made a commitment to live my life on purpose, and I believe that I can show readers that there are no boundaries to achieving great personal success. It looks different to all of us and it's what makes your space and your journey unique. The life we are all meant to live is as much about how you feel, to what your space looks like when you wake up in the morning. It's as simple as if your house is cluttered then your brain feels cluttered. So I ask you, does your space feel authentic and does it support who you are? But I guess a better question to ask yourself is "Does your life feel authentic to who you are and who you want to be?" If the answer isn't a hard "YES" then we've got work to do!

Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

It’s no surprise principals feel overwhelmed and exhausted. Every day, they deal with federal and state regulations, district policies, and parental pressures. The expectations on educators are higher than ever, tempting many principals to consider alternate livelihoods. Former school leader and teacher Angela Kelly Robeck helps principals who feel discouraged at the lack of control they feel over their job and personal life, allowing them to find a new perspective on working to exhaustion, saying yes when they don’t want to, and completely dreading going to work each day. The Empowered Principal provides relief for readers by pointing out that they have the power and ability to manage the results in their life by adjusting their approach and being mindful of their thoughts and emotional state—regardless of whether they choose to stay in their job or even pursue an alternate career. Angela shares how to manage feelings of overwhelm, reasons why school leaders stay in their jobs, how to confidently stay or peacefully go (and how to choose, and why educators are afraid to speak up. The Empowered Principal guides principals to reform the way they live and work as an educational leader and allows them to work each day with joy and accomplishment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the crossroads of various disciplines, this collective work examines the possibility of a new end-user “engagement” in ongoing digital/technological products and services development. It provides an overview of recent research specifically focused on the user’s democratic participation and empowerment. It also enables readers to better identify the main opportunities of participatory design, a concept which encourages the blurring of the role between user and designer. This allows people to escape their status as “end-user” and to elevate themselves to the level of creator. This book explores new avenues for rethinking the processes and practices of corporate innovation in order to cope with current socio-economic and technological changes. In so doing, it aims to help companies renew industrial models that allow them to design and produce new ranges of technological products and services by giving the user an active role in the development process, far beyond the basic role of consumer. Intended for designers, design researchers and scientists interested in innovation and technology management, this book also provides a valuable resource for professionals involved in technology-based innovation processes.

Book excerpt: In this paradigm-shattering book, leading behavioural economist and food psychologist Brian Wansink - dubbed the 'Sherlock Holmes of food' and the 'wizard of why' - offers a radical new philosophy for weight loss. The answer isn't to tell people what to do: it's to set up their living environments so that they will naturally lose weight. Using cutting-edge, never-before-seen research from his acclaimed Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, Wansink reveals how innovative and inexpensive design changes - from home kitchens to restaurants, from grocery stores to schools and workplaces - can make it mindlessly easy for people to eat healthier and make it more profitable for the companies who sell the food. In Slim by Design, Wansink argues that the easiest, quickest and most natural way to reverse weight gain is to work with human nature, not against it. He demonstrates how schools can nudge kids to take an apple instead of a cookie, how restaurants can increase profits by selling half-size portions, how supermarkets can double the amount of fruits and vegetables they sell, and how anyone can cut plate refills at home by more than a third. Interweaving drawings, charts, floor plans and scorecards with new scientific studies and compelling insights that will make you view your surroundings in an entirely fresh way, this entertaining, eye-opening book offers practical solutions for changing your everyday environment to make you, your family and even your community slim by design.
