Book excerpt: Since 2001 the Statistical Offices in Germany offer access to micro level panel data that linked information from various waves of a survey over time. These panel data enormously extended the research potential of data from official statistics by allowing dynamic analyses and control for unobserved heterogeneity via panel econometric methods. A second generation of data sets which became available recently has an even higher research potential. These new data combine information for firms gathered in different surveys (or from external sources) that could not be analyzed jointly before. Merging firm level data from different surveys to construct data sets that cover information on a wider range of variables than the ones collected in any of these surveys, one at a time, is the basic idea of the project AFiD. AFiD is an acronym for the German Amtliche Firmendaten fr Deutschland (official firm data for Germany). The papers in this issue present first results generated with this new type of firm level data and discussions.

Book excerpt: Empirical and theoretical evidence on the German service sector is inversely related to its growing overall importance for the entire economy. This monograph offers a comprehensive theory-based econometric treatment of three important and severely understudied issues related to services: innovative activity, the effects of innovation on the demand for labour, and the performance of newly founded firms. In addition, the book contains detailed descriptive statistics on innovative activity, skill mix as well as on growth and current economic importance. It offers researchers, policy makers, and practitioners a unique opportunity to gain knowledge on the new German service economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate governance is an important issue on the research agenda of financial economists. Using a new and unique data set of German corporations this book examines three topics that are crucial to a better understanding of corporate governance: (a) the frequency, causes, and consequences of control transfers, (b) the determinants of acquisition and failure, and (c) the role of corporate governance and market discipline for productivity growth. This book points out methodological drawbacks of previous empirical studies and provides suggestions on how to avoid these problems in research practice.

Book excerpt: Recent empirical studies suggest that there is a rising trend of market power across sectors in advanced economies. We contribute to this line of research by providing industry-specific evidence for German manufacturing industries, based on representative high-quality firm level data from official statistics that cover firms from all size classes with more than 20 employees (2005{2013). We compare firm-specific markups and industry concentration as market power indicators and discuss the role of digitization. Our results do not suggest an overall average increase in market power in German manufacturing. However, if we look at changes in individual industries, then we do find increasing markups and an increasing concentration in many industries. We also demonstrate the ambiguous relationship between the two indicators and find no clear evidence that digital transformation and market power go hand in hand.

Book excerpt: Economic globalisation and technological change are the two issues that concerned people in the past, concern them today and will concern them in the future - all over the world, poor or rich. Traditionally, questions about allocative effects are asked: What are the labour market implications? Who loses? Who wins? What is the net aggregate welfare effect after an adjustment period? However, two points are rarely taken into consideration: How do globalisation and technological change interact and what are the potential long-run implications for economic growth? This book addresses the interplay of these megatrends. It asks how economic globalisation may affect innovation and technology of individual firms and eventually the growth prospects of countries. Thereby it shows that protectionism not only harms static efficiency but might as well lead to dynamic losses. The book provides a systematic overview of the theoretical underpinnings of the openness-growth nexus and summarises the conceptual problems and important findings of the empirical analyses so far. The theoretical insights are supported by two empirical studies, the first dealing with the innovative behaviour and the “within-multinational” technology transfer of Spanish firms that were acquired by foreign companies and the second analysing productivity growth rate implications from exporting for German manufacturing firms.

Book excerpt: This publication provides a comprehensive compendium of the current state of Germany’s research infrastructure in the social, economic, and behavioural sciences. In addition, the book presents detailed discussions of the current needs of empirical researchers in these fields as well as of opportunities for future development. The importance of solid data for both public policy and the social and economic sciences is obvious. Today, empirical research is essential in finding solutions to many of the major challenges our society faces, such as environmental change, turbulent financial markets, and population growth. Based on 68 advisory reports by more than 100 internationally recognised authors from a wide range of fields, the book provides recommendations by the German Data Forum (RatSWD) on how to improve the research infrastructure so as to create conditions ideal for making Germany’s social, economic, and behavioural sciences more innovative and internationally competitive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the relationship between firm dynamics, innovation and globalization, the processes that are essential for long term economic growth and welfare creation. This volume deals with these three issues in three sections titled respectively: entrepreneurship, new firm formation and growth; productivity-innovation-growthnexus; globalization, multinational firms and producers’ dynamics. The book presents new studies written by distinguished researchers in the field, who use state-of-the-art methodologies and extensive sources of firm- and plant-level longitudinal data to analyze and understand these major economic issues facing modern economies. In the first section, the book proposes two comprehensive introductory surveys which explore in detail the underpinnings of entrepreneurship, new firm formation and growth in advanced and developing countries. The second fundamental issue, productivity-innovation and firm dynamics, is approached by examining key drivers of selection mechanisms such as size, scale elasticity, innovative efforts, financial fragility of the firms, barriers to entry and exit, capital and financial market distortions, institutional inefficiencies and other market imperfections which affect the ability of firms to expand or enter. The third section examines differences, linkages and intertwined evolution of foreign and domestic firms in their dynamics of survival and growth in different institutional contexts and periods. Each chapter includes a detailed discussion of the implications of the respective analyses for enterprise policy. In a concluding chapter the overall implications for enterprise policy of the analyses presented in the different chapters are drawn by the Editors. This approach ensures that the book is integrated around a coherent central theme in comprehensive framework. The book responds to a growing concern among scholars, professionals, and policy makers over the recent decades about firm ability to survive and compete in a context of increasing globalization and international competition. The approach adopted is both theoretical and empirical with consideration of paradigmatic case studies in Europe, Africa and Asia, providing new evidence on developed, developing and transition economies in a comparative perspective. The cases selected represent different levels of development, different firms strategies and paths, with distinct outcomes. The book is an essential reading for scholars and students concerned with industry development, public policy and globalization, as well as to all those involved professionally in such issues.
