Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough examination of the recent economic (mis-)fortunes of Nigeria, the so-called giant of Africa, would reveal the unrealistic economic practice of depending on one major resource to fund the running of government, economic growth, and infrastructural development. This impractical approach to the management of the economy is magnified by the fact that Nigeria, as a country, is put in a precarious situation whenever there is a temporal or permanent price decline in the global crude oil market as this automatically translates to a reduction of the revenue available to government. This work is an attempt to present discussions into developing a Long-term and Strategic Economic Development Module for all regions and government in Nigeria. It is aimed at exposing Nigeria and Nigerians to the numerous benefits accruable in the development of its indigenous maritime economy. An attempt is made here to empirically rationalize the diversification of the Nigerian economy with its recent cabotage policies forming the foundation of an economy that emphasizes on shipping and associated mining and agricultural industries for the majority of its revenue. In order to justify this position, we undertake a careful analysis of the business histories of credible shipping companies like the precolonial Elder Dempster line and also the fast-growing Chinese auto manufacturing industries with a view to magnify their successes worthy of emulation. We have also compared some aspects of the US internal maritime structure with that of Nigeria and have exposed the practice of Japan in developing regions through the establishment of sea ports. It is intended that this book would serve as a personal and patriotic contribution to the Heads of Government as they strategize the reestablishment of Nigeria as the brightest investment destination in the global economic horizon in a bid to spark the recognition of our great nation as an emerging giant in the World Economic Order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Paucity of literature in the area of maritime law in Nigeria was what motivated the author to embark on this project and as such this book is the authors attempt to contribute to the bridging of the gap in knowledge in this area of the law. This book is written in simple and understandable English to ensure fluidity of reading. It is presented in such a way as to provide information in the areas of commercial law, carriage of goods by sea, maritime law as well as practical steps in maritime law litigation and related actions. Particular consideration has been given to the study of carriage of dangerous goods by sea, a subject which existing legal literature in Nigeria merely mentioned in passing. Suffice it to say that this book is the first Nigerian legal literature that has explored that subject, taking into consideration our domestic laws and international treaties; most of which are yet to be ratified and domesticated in Nigeria. Though the work has Nigeria as its geographical location it has discussed the subject with comparative analysis of contemporary development in some areas of maritime law; with special reference to the United Kingdom and the United States. It is the authors belief that this book, apart from providing practical guide to maritime litigation in Nigeria, would also serve as veritable tool for teaching and studying of maritime law and related courses in Nigerian Universities and other territory institutions and would be immeasurably useful to legal practitioners, members of the bench an research fellows. Book excerpt: This is the most comprehensive review of maritime cabotage law. It introduces the new theory of Developmental Sovereignty to jurisprudence. The maritime cabotage law provisions and approaches as adopted in many states and jurisdictions has been extensively scrutinised. This book challenges the established and accepted wisdom surrounding maritime cabotage by presenting new reasoning on the underpinning principles of the concept of maritime cabotage law. The book offers a vibrant discussion on the adjustment in the regulatory approaches of maritime cabotage, from one that was intrinsically premised on the idea of national sovereignty, to one that now embraces the broader ideology of development. It investigates what the common understanding of the law of maritime cabotage should be and on what intellectual basis it can be justified. It reduces the inconsistencies and confusion that surround the concept and application of maritime cabotage law, to provide a more certain and more robust concept of maritime cabotage.

Book excerpt: “There is a lot of competition around Africa, and the only way to make investors more interested in our offerings is by showcasing the real opportunities present in our country and our appetite in technology transfer.” Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. The Energy Year Nigeria 2021 highlights Nigeria’s ambitious quest to ramp up production via marginal fields, increase its refining capacity through modular plants, advance gas utilisation with virtual pipelines and revamp its entire power sector to ultimately become Africa’s energy powerhouse. “Our strategy and focus for gas in 2021 is to drive the implementation of the country’s “Decade of Gas” initiatives and grow the overall importance of the industry via increasing its contribution to Nigeria’s GDP.” Engr. Sarki Auwalu, Director and CEO, Department of Petroleum Resources The Energy Year Nigeria 2021 elucidates how Nigeria’s energy industry has remained resilient while it undergoes a unique reshaping through its recently passed Petroleum Industry Bill, as well as the launch of its “Decade of Gas” initiative and the materialising of its “refining revolution” – all of which are propelling the country on its path towards energy transition and self-sufficiency. Produced in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Power, the Department of Petroleum Resources and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, this eighth edition of The Energy Year’s Nigeria series provides investors deep insight on the efforts made to push the country’s energy sector beyond the Covid-19 crisis. The report gives a detailed picture of the opportunities surrounding crude oil, natural gas and power at a time when Nigeria is driven by its pursuit of greater efficiency and a viable energy transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining local content law and policy in the oil and gas industry, this book uses Nigeria as a primary case study, comparing its approach to countries such as Brazil and Norway which have also adopted local content laws in relation to their gas and oil industries. In considering various aspects of local content law and policy as they apply to the oil and gas industry, the book examines the factors behind the formulation of local content policies by petroleum producing states, and the various strategies they have employed to implement them. It analyses arguments against local content requirements from the perspective of international trade and investment law, and from liberal market economic theorists, who argue against its overall usefulness. The book highlights salient aspects of the oil and gas industry such as regulation, national oil companies, treatment of minorities, and policy formulation and implementation.

Book excerpt: Arrested Development takes a hard look at the state of Nigeria's shipping sector and concludes that the sector has failed to live up to expectation. Inconsistent government policies, mediocrity, poor planning, and a general lack of understanding of the role of shipping in national development have all contributed to the sorry state of the shipping sector. The author traced the history of Nigeria's shipping sector from the precolonial era to the present time and concludes that a lot more needs to be done if meaningful development of the sector is to be attained.

Nna-Emeka Okereke, examines various aspects of Cameroon-Nigeria relations since the countries attained independence in 1960. The Cameroonian and Nigerian contributors contextualize core topical issues that have featured prominently in the course of bilateral relations between both countries, ranging from the theoretical underpinnings required to understand the dynamics of Cameroon-Nigeria relations to contending issues and areas of mutual interests driving diplomatic relations between them. This book reveals trends and dynamics while also accommodating divergent perspectives that demonstrate how theories can be applied to achieve real results. Of significant import is the prognosis that stimulates concerns for the future of Cameroon-Nigeria relations bearing in mind the strategic positions of both countries in West and Central Africa. Cameroon-Nigeria Relations is an indispensable resource for scholars, diplomats, and foreign policy actors that will enrich understanding and inform opinions on charting future courses for healthy bilateral relations between Cameroon and Nigeria.
