Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern electronic devices and novel materials often derive their extraordinary properties from the intriguing, complex behavior of large numbers of electrons forming what is known as an electron liquid. This book provides an in-depth introduction to the physics of the interacting electron liquid in a broad variety of systems, including metals, semiconductors, artificial nano-structures, atoms and molecules. One, two and three dimensional systems are treated separately and in parallel. Different phases of the electron liquid, from the Landau Fermi liquid to the Wigner crystal, from the Luttinger liquid to the quantum Hall liquid are extensively discussed. Both static and time-dependent density functional theory are presented in detail. Although the emphasis is on the development of the basic physical ideas and on a critical discussion of the most useful approximations, the formal derivation of the results is highly detailed and based on the simplest, most direct methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive primer by a Nobel Physicist covers the electronic spectra of metals, electrical and thermal conductivities, galvanomagnetic and thermoelectrical phenomena, the behavior of metals in high-frequency fields, sound absorption, and Fermi-liquid phenomena. Addressing in detail all aspects of the energy spectra of electrons in metals and the theory of superconductivity, it continues to be a valuable resource for the field almost thirty years after its initial publication. Targeted at undergraduate students majoring in physics as well as graduate and postgraduate students, research workers, and teachers, this is an essential reference on the topic of electromagnetism and superconductivity in metals. No special knowledge of metals beyond a course in general physics is needed, although the author does presume a knowledge of quantum mechanics and quantum statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electron liquid paradigm is at the basis of most of our current understanding of the physical properties of electronic systems. Quite remarkably, the latter are nowadays at the intersection of the most exciting areas of science: materials science, quantum chemistry, nano-electronics, biology and quantum computation. Accordingly, its importance can hardly be overestimated. During the past 20 years the field has witnessed momentous developments, which are partly covered in this new volume. Advances in semiconductor technology have allowed the realizations of ultra-pure electron liquids whose density, unlike that of the ones spontaneously occurring in nature, can be tuned by electrical means, allowing a systematic exploration of both strongly and weakly correlated regimes. Most of these system are two- or even one-dimensional and can be coupled together in the form of multi-layers or multi-wires, opening vast observational possibilities. On the theoretical side, quantum Monte Carlo methods have allowed an essentially exact determination of the ground-state energy of the electron liquid, and have provided partial answers to the still open question of the structure of its phase diagram. Starting from the 1980s some truly revolutionary concepts have emerged, which are well represented in this volume.

Book excerpt: A treatment of the Fermi-liquid theory of high-frequency phenomena in metals, in paricular the effects due to local features in the geometry of the Fermi surface. The text develops a consistent theory of several effects, such as cyclotron resonances in magnetic fields normal to the surface. Topics covered include: basic equations of the Fermi-liquid theory; cyclotron Doppler on waves; local anomalies in the Fermi surface; cyclotron resonancce in metals; magneto-acoustic oscillations and the local geometry of the Fermi surface.

Book excerpt: The problem of conventional, low-temperature superconductivity has been regarded as solved since the seminal work of Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS) more than 50 years ago. However, the theory does not allow accurate predictions of some of the most fundamental properties of a superconductor, including the superconducting energy gap on the Fermi surface. This thesis describes the development and scientific implementation of a new experimental method that puts this old problem into an entirely new light. The nominee has made major contributions to the development and implementation of a new experimental method that enhances the resolution of spectroscopic experiments on dispersive lattice-vibrational excitations (the "glue" responsible for Cooper pairing of electrons in conventional superconductors) by more than two orders of magnitude. Using this method,he has discovered an unexpected relationship between the superconducting energy gap and the geometry of the Fermi surface in the normal state, both of which leave subtle imprints in the lattice vibrations that could not be resolved by conventional spectroscopic methods. He has confirmed this relationship on two elemental superconductors and on a series of metallic alloys. This indicates that a mechanism qualitatively beyond the standard BCS theory determines the magnitude and anisotropy of the superconducting gap.

Physical models (like extended BCS model, bipolaron model, spin bag model, RVB (resonating valence bond) model, preformed Cooper pairs and antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation (AFSF) based models, stripe phase, paired cluster (spin glass (SG) frustration based) model, Kamimura-Suwa (Hund's coupling mechanism based) model, electron- plasmon interaction, electron- phonon interaction, etc.), theoretical methods (methodologies) (like generalised BCS-Migdal-Eliashberg theory, Hubbard model, t-J model, t-t'-U model, Hubbard-Holstein model, Fermi-, non Fermi- and marginal Fermi- liquid concepts, generalised Hartree-Fock formalism, etc.) and, experimental status and methodologies are all described there. For comparison with cuprates, fullerenes, ruthenates, organic-, non Cu-containing oxide-and conventional (elemental, A15)- superconductors, molecular crystals, nickelates, manganites, borides etc. are also discussed.
