Book excerpt: Sphalerite concentrates prepared during processing of Missouri lead ores contain small percentages of cobalt and nickel which adversely affect zinc electrolysis. The Bureau of Mines has evaluated solvent extraction and precipitation techniques to remove and recover cobalt and nickel from zinc sulfate solution prior to zinc electrolysis. Prepared zinc sulfate solutions containing about 190 gpl of zinc and 50 ppm of both cobalt and nickel were treated using various combinations of complexing reagents, solvent, pH, concentration, time, and temperature. The following complex reagents gave the best results a-nitroso-ßnaphthol, ß-nitrosos-a-napthol, 1,2 cyclohexane dione dioxime (nioxime), di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime, and dimethglyoxime. These reagents in suitable solvents lowered the cobalt and nickel levels to

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic Geothermometry explores, presents and explains the new technique of temperature estimation within the Earth’s interior; the Electromagnetic technique will identify zones of geothermal anomalies and thus provides locations for deep drilling. This book includes many case studies from geothermal areas such as Travale (Italy), Soultz-sous-Forêts (France) and Hengill (Iceland), allowing the author and reader to draw conclusions regarding the dominating heat transfer mechanisms, location of its sources and to constrain the locations for drilling of the new boreholes. Covering a topic that so far has very little coverage (due to its newness) Electromagnetic Geothermometry presents ground breaking information on the interpretation of MT signals. And as such, is similar to the work that was done to develop new generations of seismic inversion methods that have since come to dominate the oil industry. Up until now geophysical methods have had difficulty resolving temperature differences which have been critical in the understanding of location and magnitude of geothermal resources Authored by the world’s foremost geothermometry experts who combined have more than 40 years of experience on the subject Presents case studies, allowing the author and reader to draw conclusions regarding the dominating heat transfer mechanisms, location of its sources and to constrain the locations for drilling of the new boreholes Provides important information on the constraints for drilling of new exploration boreholes Describes techniques that will dramatically decrease the costs associated with exploration drilling Includes information to help the reader improve the accuracy of the temperature estimations in the interwell space as well as far beneath boreholes

Book excerpt: Basic Principles of Induction Logging provides geoscientists with the information required to survey the electrical conductivity of rocks surrounding a borehole. The formation conductivity distribution in the borehole vicinity is critical information required in formation evaluation and geosteering applications. Developing a theory of EM logging and on understanding basic physics for both wireline and LWD logging tools, this reference furnishes valuable insights for development and use of EM techniques in practical logging applications. Basic Principles of Induction Logging will be vital for anyone attempting to investigate, invent, and develop the next generation of EM logging tools. It will provide information required to enable operation in more challenging environments such as logging while drilling, anisotropic and thinly laminated formations, high angle and horizontal wells. Provides a step-by-step approach to the theory of electromagnetic methods in borehole applications starting from the simplest models Presents theory on the subject that has been previously hard to find, making this a must have reference for anyone working in the field Delivers a much needed update on the latest analysis methods, modelling techniques, drilling environments, and probe configurations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fracturesâ€"a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storageâ€"has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.
