Book Synopsis Contact Problems in Elasticity by : N. Kikuchi

Book excerpt: The contact of one deformable body with another lies at the heart of almost every mechanical structure. Here, in a comprehensive treatment, two of the field's leading researchers present a systematic approach to contact problems. Using variational formulations, Kikuchi and Oden derive a multitude of new results, both for classical problems and for nonlinear problems involving large deflections and buckling of thin plates with unilateral supports, dry friction with nonclassical laws, large elastic and elastoplastic deformations with frictional contact, dynamic contacts with dynamic frictional effects, and rolling contacts. This method exposes properties of solutions obscured by classical methods, and it provides a basis for the development of powerful numerical schemes. Among the novel results presented here are algorithms for contact problems with nonlinear and nonlocal friction, and very effective algorithms for solving problems involving the large elastic deformation of hyperelastic bodies with general contact conditions. Includes detailed discussion of numerical methods for nonlinear materials with unilateral contact and friction, with examples of metalforming simulations. Also presents algorithms for the finite deformation rolling contact problem, along with a discussion of numerical examples.

Download or read book The Mechanics of Jointed Structures written by Matthew R.W. Brake and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the challenges inherent in jointed structures and guides researchers to the still-open, pressing challenges that need to be solved to advance this critical field. The authors cover multiple facets of interfacial mechanics that pertain to jointed structures: tribological modeling and measurements of the interface surfaces, constitutive modeling of joints, numerical reduction techniques for structures with joints, and uncertainty quantification and propagation for these structures. Thus, the key subspecialties addressed are model reduction for nonlinear systems, uncertainty quantification, constitutive modeling of joints, and measurements of interfacial mechanics properties (including tribology). The diverse contributions to this volume fill a much needed void in the literature and present to a new generation of joints researchers the potential challenges that they can engage in in order to advance the state of the art. Clearly defines internationally recognized challenges in joint mechanics/jointed structures and provides a comprehensive assessment of the state-of-the-art for joint modeling; Identifies open research questions facing joint mechanics; Details methodologies for accounting for uncertainties (due both to missing physics and variability) in joints; Explains and illustrates best-practices for measuring joints’ properties experimentally; Maximizes reader understanding of modeling joint dynamics with a comparison of multiple approaches.

Book Synopsis Nonsmooth Dynamics of Contacting Thermoelastic Bodies by : Jan Awrejcewicz
Download or read book Nonsmooth Dynamics of Contacting Thermoelastic Bodies written by Jan Awrejcewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is devoted to an intensive study in contact mechanics, treating the nonsmooth dynamics of contacting bodies. Mathematical modeling is illustrated and discussed in numerous examples of engineering objects working in different kinematic and dynamic environments. Topics covered in five self-contained chapters examine non-steady dynamic phenomena which are determined by key factors: i.e., heat conduction, thermal stresses, and the amount of wearing. New to this monograph is the importance of the inertia factor, which is considered on par with thermal stresses. Nonsmooth Dynamics of Contacting Thermoelastic Bodies is an engaging accessible practical reference for engineers (civil, mechanical, industrial) and researchers in theoretical and applied mechanics, applied mathematics, physicists, and graduate students.

Book Synopsis Interfacial Mechanics by : Jane Wang
Download or read book Interfacial Mechanics written by Jane Wang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the characteristics of material contact and lubrication at tribological interfaces is of great importance to engineering researchers and machine designers. Traditionally, contact and lubrication are separately studied due to technical difficulties, although they often coexist in reality and they are actually on the same physical ground. Fast research advancements in recent years have enabled the development and application of unified models and numerical approaches to simulate contact and lubrication, merging their studies into the domain of Interfacial Mechanics. This book provides updated information based on recent research progresses in related areas, which includes new concepts, theories, methods, and results for contact and lubrication problems involving elastic or inelastic materials, homogeneous or inhomogeneous contacting bodies, using stochastic or deterministic models for dealing with rough surfaces. It also contains unified models and numerical methods for mixed lubrication studies, analyses of interfacial frictional and thermal behaviors, as well as theories for studying the effects of multiple fields on interfacial characteristics. The book intends to reflect the recent trends of research by focusing on numerical simulation and problem solving techniques for practical interfaces of engineered surfaces and materials. This book is written primarily for graduate and senior undergraduate students, engineers, and researchers in the fields of tribology, lubrication, surface engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering.
