Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book’s title, Nonsmooth Mechanics and Analysis, refers to a major domain of mechanics, particularly those initiated by the works of Jean Jacques Moreau. Nonsmooth mechanics concerns mechanical situations with possible nondifferentiable relationships, eventually discontinuous, as unilateral contact, dry friction, collisions, plasticity, damage, and phase transition. The basis of the approach consists in dealing with such problems without resorting to any regularization process. Indeed, the nonsmoothness is due to simplified mechanical modeling; a more sophisticated model would require too large a number of variables, and sometimes the mechanical information is not available via experimental investigations. Therefore, the mathematical formulation becomes nonsmooth; regularizing would only be a trick of arithmetic without any physical justification. Nonsmooth analysis was developed, especially in Montpellier, to provide specific theoretical and numerical tools to deal with nonsmoothness. It is important not only in mechanics but also in physics, robotics, and economics. Audience This book is intended for researchers in mathematics and mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 44 papers presented at the Third Contact Mechanics International Symposium (CMIS 2001) held in Praia da Consola9ao, Peniche (portugal), June 17-21,2001. This Symposium was the direct continuation of the first two CMIS held in Lausanne (1992) and in Carry-Le-Rouet (1994). Other related meetings, in what concerns scientific topics and participants, took place in the nineties at La Grande Motte (1990), Vadstena (1996), Ferrara (1997), Munich (1998) and Grenoble (1999). The Symposium aimed at gathering researchers with interests in a wide range of topics in theoretical, computational and experimental contact mechanics. The call for papers mentioned topics in tribology, mathematical formulations and analysis, numerical methods in non-smooth mechanics, impact problems, instabilities and technological problems. The total number of participants was 102, from Universities and Research Institutes of 19 countries. The Scientific Committee reviewed 102 submitted abstracts, and the final program consisted of 6 main lectures, 43 oral communications and 36 poster presentations (see Appendix A). The papers in this book correspond to almost all the main lectures and oral communications, and they are assembled in 5 chapters: • Dynamics and Impact • Instabilities, Oscillations and Waves • Contact Models, Results and Applications • Mathematical Analysis • Numerical Methods. We thank all the authors for their valuable contributions to this volume. We are indebted to the members of the Scientific Committee for their help in refereeing the submitted abstracts and manuscripts. We also thank the Series editor, Prof. Graham Gladwell, for his assistance in the revision process.

Book excerpt: This is the last book of three devoted to Mechanics, and uses the theoretical background presented in Classical Mechanics: Kinematics and Statics and Classical Mechanics: Dynamics. It focuses on exhibiting a unique approach, rooted in the classical mechanics, to study mechanical and electromagnetic processes occurring in Mechatronics. Contrary to the majority of the books devoted to Applied Mechanics, this volume places a particular emphasis on theory, modeling, analysis, and control of gyroscopic devices, including the military applications. This volume provides practicing mechanical/mechatronic engineers and designers, researchers, graduate and postgraduate students with a knowledge of mechanics focused directly on advanced applications.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the development of Melnikov-type methods applied to high dimensional dynamical systems governed by ordinary differential equations. Although the classical Melnikov's technique has found various applications in predicting homoclinic intersections, it is devoted only to the analysis of three-dimensional systems (in the case of mechanics, they represent one-degree-of-freedom nonautonomous systems). This book extends the classical Melnikov's approach to the study of high dimensional dynamical systems, and uses simple models of dry friction to analytically predict the occurrence of both stick-slip and slip-slip chaotic orbits, research which is very rarely reported in the existing literature even on one-degree-of-freedom nonautonomous dynamics. This pioneering attempt to predict the occurrence of deterministic chaos of nonlinear dynamical systems will attract many researchers including applied mathematicians, physicists, as well as practicing engineers. Analytical formulas are explicitly formulated step-by-step, even attracting potential readers without a rigorous mathematical background. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: A Role of the Melnikov-Type Methods in Applied Sciences (137 KB). Contents: A Role of the Melnikov-Type Methods in Applied Sciences; Classical Melnikov Approach; Homoclinic Chaos Criterion in a Rotated Froude Pendulum with Dry Friction; Smooth and Nonsmooth Dynamics of a Quasi-Autonomous Oscillator with Coulomb and Viscous Frictions; Application of the MelnikovOCoGruendler Method to Mechanical Systems; A Self-Excited Spherical Pendulum; A Double Self-excited Duffing-type Oscillator; A Triple Self-Excited Duffing-type Oscillator. Readership: Graduate students and researchers in dynamical systems.

Book excerpt: The mathematical theory of contact mechanics is a growing field in engineering and scientific computing. This book is intended as a unified and readily accessible source for mathematicians, applied mathematicians, mechanicians, engineers and scientists, as well as advanced students. The first part describes models of the processes involved like friction, heat generation and thermal effects, wear, adhesion and damage. The second part presents many mathematical models of practical interest and demonstrates the close interaction and cross-fertilization between contact mechanics and the theory of variational inequalities. The last part reviews further results, gives many references to current research and discusses open problems and future developments. The book can be read by mechanical engineers interested in applications. In addition, some theorems and their proofs are given as examples for the mathematical tools used in the models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thank you for opening the second edition of this monograph, which is devoted to the study of a class of nonsmooth dynamical systems of the general form: ::i; = g(x,u) (0. 1) f(x, t) 2: 0 where x E JRn is the system's state vector, u E JRm is the vector of inputs, and the function f (-, . ) represents a unilateral constraint that is imposed on the state. More precisely, we shall restrict ourselves to a subclass of such systems, namely mechanical systems subject to unilateral constraints on the position, whose dynamical equations may be in a first instance written as: ii= g(q,q,u) (0. 2) f(q, t) 2: 0 where q E JRn is the vector of generalized coordinates of the system and u is an in put (or controller) that generally involves a state feedback loop, i. e. u= u(q, q, t, z), with z= Z(z, q, q, t) when the controller is a dynamic state feedback. Mechanical systems composed of rigid bodies interacting fall into this subclass. A general prop erty of systems as in (0. 1) and (0. 2) is that their solutions are nonsmooth (with respect to time): Nonsmoothness arises primarily from the occurence of impacts (or collisions, or percussions) in the dynamical behaviour, when the trajectories attain the surface f(x, t) = O. They are necessary to keep the trajectories within the subspace = {x : f(x, t) 2: O} of the system's state space.

Book excerpt: This book presents the theoretical frame for studying lumped nonsmooth dynamical systems: the mathematical methods are recalled, and adapted numerical methods are introduced (differential inclusions, maximal monotone operators, Filippov theory, Aizerman theory, etc.). Tools available for the analysis of classical smooth nonlinear dynamics (stability analysis, the Melnikov method, bifurcation scenarios, numerical integrators, solvers, etc.) are extended to the nonsmooth frame. Many models and applications arising from mechanical engineering, electrical circuits, material behavior and civil engineering are investigated to illustrate theoretical and computational developments.
