Book excerpt: In this final report we summarize our progress towards developing an innovative algorithm called BEAMTAP (Broadband Efficient Adaptive Method for True-time-delay Array Processing) for adaptive array processing in broadband scenarios. This approach is especially appropriate for optical implementation of sonar array beamforming. The BEAMTAP algorithm only requires two tapped delay lines, rather than one for every array element as required by conventional time-delay-and-sum beamformers. This efficiency provides a huge hardware savings for large arrays. By separating the delay lines from the adaptive weights, this algorithm can be more easily implemented in optical hardware, making it easier to exploit processing and interfacing advantages of optical systems. We discuss an optical beamforming and jammer-nulling system for sonar array beamforming that utilizes photorefractive crystals for the adaptive weights in combination with time-delay-and-integrate (TDI) charge-coupled device (CCD) detector arrays to process the parallel data from optically interrogated arrays of hydrophone sensors. In this report we discuss the operation of BEAMTAP in comparison with LMS time-delay-and-sum array processors and P-vector passive array beamsteering operations, and we demonstrate its operation using numerical simulations.

Book excerpt: We present an adaptation of the BEAMTAP (Broadband and Efficient Adaptive Method for True-time-delay Array Processing) algorithm, previously developed for wideband phased array radars, to lower bandwidth applications such as sonar. This system utilizes the emerging time or wavelength multiplexed optical hydrophone sensors and processes the cohered array of signals in the optical domain without conversion to the electronic domain or digitization. Modulated signals from an optical hydrophone array are pre-processed then imaged through a photorefractive crystal where they interfere with a reference signal and its delayed replicas. The diffraction of the sonar signals off these adaptive weight gratings and detection on a linear time-delay-and-integrate charge coupled device (TDI CCD) completes the true-time-delay (TTD) beamforming process. Optical signals focused on different regions of the TDI CCD accumulate the appropriate delays necessary to synchronize and coherently sum the acoustic signals arriving at various angles on the hydrophone array. In this report, we present an experimental demonstration of TTD processing of low frequency signals (in the KHz sonar regime) using a TDI CCD tapped delay line. Simulations demonstrating the performance of the overall system are also presented.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on Adaptive Methods in Underwater Acoustics was held on 30 July - 10 August 1984 in LLineburg, Germany. The Institute was primarily concerned with signal processing for underwater appl ica tions. The majority of the presentations, when taken together, yield a definite picture of the present status of understanding of adaptive and high resolution processing, setting out the progress achieved over the past four years together with the major problem areas remaining. Major effort was made to obtain a commensurate contribution of tutorial and advanced research papers. It is my hope that the material in this volume may be equally well suited for students getting an introduction to some of the basic problems in underwater signal processing and for the professionals who may obtain an up-to-date overview of the present state of the art. This might be especially useful in view of the controversy and lack of adequate interrelationships which have marked this rapidly expanding field in the past. Practical reinforcement of this picture is provided by the material concerning digital and optical processing technology, giving some guidance to achievable adaptive and high resolution techniques with current processing devices. The formal programme was extended and detailed by a series of six evening work shops on specific topics, during which informal discussions took place among the participants. Summaries of these workshops are also included in these Proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern radar, telecommunication, sonar, and radio-astronomy systems use integrated systems, complex signals, and signal processing methods exten sively. These systems require the development of new, more efficient systems. One of the major ways to improve radar and sonar systems is to use multichannel systems, the most promising of which employ space-time signal processing. In the last few years the intensive growth in electronics, informa tion processing techniques, microwave and laser technology, electrooptics and holography, acoustics, and optoelectronics have resulted in new scientific and technological research fronts. One of these is the theory and technology of electrooptical array antennas-a new class of receiving antennas whose pat tern is controlled by means of coherent optics and holography. Electrooptical array theory and technology have been involved in the study of the power, resolution, and range characteristics of arrays with various coherent opti cal processors. The practical applications of these systems and methods for building them using contemporary optoelectronics have also been studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application of optical signal processing techniques to adaptive array processing was investigated. The common adaptive array algorithms were reviewed. Adaptive array processing generally requires some form of correlation and the characterisitics of optical correlators were compared leading to the selection of the time integrating optical correlator for further investigation. An adaptive array processor using time integrating optical correlators, which was first proposed by David Casasent, was analyzed to determine applicability of this signal processing technique to a general adaptive array environment. This processor was found to be similar to a comparable maximum likelihood approach. Limitations on the performance of this processor in terms of ambiguity and resolution were found and these results were confirmed by computer simulation of the adaptive array environment, the processor, and the resulting antenna response. Book excerpt: Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN) are envisioned as an aquatic medium for a variety of applications including oceanographic data collection, disaster management or prevention, assisted navigation, attack protection, and pollution monitoring. Similar to terrestrial wireless sensor networks (WSN), UWSNs consist of sensor nodes that collect the information and pass it to a base station; however, researchers have to face many challenges in executing the network in an aquatic medium. Energy-Efficient Underwater Wireless Communications and Networking is a crucial reference source that covers existing and future possibilities of the area as well as the current challenges presented in the implementation of underwater sensor networks. While highlighting topics such as digital signal processing, underwater localization, and acoustic channel modeling, this publication is ideally designed for machine learning experts, IT specialists, government agencies, oceanic engineers, communication experts, researchers, academicians, students, and environmental agencies concerned with optimized data flow in communication network, securing assets, and mitigating security attacks.

Book excerpt: The comprehensive research activity around the World in the fields of Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing being strongly supported by new experimental technique and equipment and by the parallel fast developments in computer technology and solid state devices, which has led to a rapidly reducing cost of digital processing thus enabling more complex processing to be carried out economically, emphasize how necessary it is at intervals of a few years through a NATO Advanced Study Institute (NATO ASI) and guided by leading experts to study the conquests in the fields of Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing. This need of study is moreover stressed by the interdisciplina rity of Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing, where a strong impact from other branches of science, - Geophysics, Radioastronomy, Bioengineering, Telecommunication, Seismology, Space Research etc. - is taking place, which makes it an extre mely difficult task for scientists to follow-up the development in all its phases and to preserve the general view of its rapid ly increasing number of possibilities. The present Proceedings of the NATO ASI held in Copenhagen during August 1980 join the series of proceedings of NATO summer schools on Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing held during the past 20 years. The equality and the fusion of the individual research fields of Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing and the separate introduction of advanced research results from other scientific areas related to underwater acoustics such as transducers characterize the subject matter of this NATO ASI.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a modified improved LMS algorithm is employed for weight adaptation of dipole array for the generation of beam pattern in multiple signal environments. In phased arrays, the generation of adapted pattern according to the signal scenario requires an efficient adaptive algorithm. The antenna array is expected to maintain sufficient gain towards each of the desired source while at the same time suppress the probing sources. This cancels the signal transmission towards each of the hostile probing sources leading to active cancellation. In the book, the performance of dipole phased array is demonstrated in terms of fast convergence, output noise power and output signal-to-interference-and noise ratio. The mutual coupling effect and role of edge elements are taken into account. It is established that dipole array along with an efficient algorithm is able to maintain multilobe beamforming with accurate and deep nulls towards each probing source. This work has application to the active radar cross section (RCS) reduction. This book consists of formulation, algorithm description and result discussion on active cancellation of hostile probing sources in phased antenna array. It includes numerous illustrations demonstrating the theme of the book for different signal environments and array configurations. The concepts in this book are discussed in an easy-to-understand manner, making it suitable even for the beginners in the field of phased arrays and adaptive array processing.
