Book excerpt: The study was made to investigate the anodic polarization behavior of commercially-available titanium alloys in sulfuric acid solutions. Six materials were investigated at 22 plus or minus 1C using the potentiostatic technique. The electrolyte was 1, 5, and 10 normal concentrations of hydrogen-saturated, sulfuric acid. Anodic polarization curves (potential versus log current density) were obtained for all specimens in each of the three acid solutions. In addition, corrosion potential runs were determined for a 0.1N H2SO4 solution. All specimens display an active-to-passive transition. The alloy containing 13V-11Cr-3A1 was the only specimen investigated which exhibited transpassive behavior in the normal range of interest (E sub corr to +3.0 volts). None of the specimens exhibited Tafel behavior for anodic dissolution in the active region or in the transpassive region. The passive current density, ip, was less than 20 microamps/sq cm for all specimens, indicating the presence of a stable passive film on the specimen surface. The magnitude of the passive current density, ip, did not vary significantly with acid concentration. The passivation potential, Ep, became more noble (positive) with increasing acid concentration. The magnitude of the critical current density, icr, increased with increasing acid concentration. The corrosion potential was essentially constant for the 1, 5, and 10 normal environments. It was more noble by 0.2 to 0.4 volts in 0.1N acid concentrations for all specimens except the Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V alloy, for which it is more noble by almost 0.7 volts. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrochemical behavior of titanium and its alloys was studied in sulfuric acid media. Electronic potentiostatic anodic polarization techniques were employed. The anodic behavior of titanium was related to the parameters of temperature; acid concentration; chloride, iron, and copper additions to the electrolyte; yield strength level; microstructure of the alloy; and the use of passivating inhibitors. Book excerpt: An investigation of Ti in sulfuric acid and HC1 solns. was carried out at a.c. frequencies of 20-2000 cycles/sec. in 10N sulfuric acid and 20-1000 cycles/sec. in 10N HC1 solns. By superimposing an a.c. the anodic dissoln. of Ti is intensified, and this phenomenon is accelerated by higher frequencies. For the return of the Ti from the active to the passive condition in 10N sulfuric acid it is necessary to pass the current at the rate of 0.48 x 10 (to the minus 3rd power) coulomb/cm (to the 2nd power) of metal surface which converted into no. of 0 atoms corresponds to 1 monoat. layer. This also indicates that a corresponding quantity of 0 was present on the Ti surface. The Ti dissoln. rate in 10N HC1 under the action of a.c. of all frequencies was considerably higher than in sulfuric acid of equal concn. This indicates that C1 is the activating agent.

Book excerpt: The corrosive and electrochemical behavior of titanium was studied in 5 N sulfuric acid solutions with admixtures of para-, meta- and orthonitrobenzoic acids. It is shown that these admixtures, like other nitro derivatives, inhibit the corrosion of titanium; a characteristic feature of the action of these inhibitors, once a certain concentration is reached, is their ability to provide complete corrosion protection to titanium by shifting its steady-state potential to the passivation range. It is shown that these inhibitors sharply inhibit the anodic process, decreasing the passivation current severalfold, and facilitate the cathodic process as a result of their own electroreduction. The dependence of the cathodic polarization on the inhibitor concentration and rate of stirring of the solution was studied. The inhibition of the cathodic process upon transition to the range of hydrogen polarization is due to obstacles of a diffusional order. (Author).

Book excerpt: It is planned to use the highly corrosion resistant titanium grade 7 (Ti Gr 7) and a high strength titanium alloy (Ti Gr 29) to fabricate the drip shield for the Yucca Mountain repository. Ti Gr 7 contains 0.15% Palladium (Pd) to increase its corrosion performance, mainly under reducing conditions. It was important to determine the corrosion behavior of Ti Gr 7 in concentrated brines at temperatures higher than 100 C, which may represent the behavior of dust deliquescence solutions. Tests were performed in concentrated NaCl + KCl solutions containing also nitrates and fluorides. Results show that Ti Gr 7 was highly resistant to general and localized corrosion. Some specimens were polarized to potentials higher than 4 volts. None of the tightly creviced specimens suffered crevice corrosion. The presence of fluoride promoted localized corrosion around the edges of the crevice former.
