While it is conceded that an aggregate of broken stone makes a stronger concrete than does an equal proportion of gravel, it is often ad visable for the sake of economy to choose the gravel concrete. If then, gravel is used, it is important that that gravel be selected which will give the greatest economy. The three qualities of gravel generally considered to be of most importance in making concrete are durability, fineness, and cleanness. Durability depends wholly upon the kind of rook compos ing the available gravel, and cannot be controlled by the engineer. However, durable gravel may be recognised by proper examination andif needed for special purposes may be obtained. Likewise the prob er fineness of gravel is agreed to be that which will give minimum voids. In regard to cleanness, however, there is so little relia ble information that engineers disagree radically as to the degree of fineness which may properly be demanded. Clarke and published in the Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers} Vol. XIV, page 163. These experiments showed that a mortar composed of clean sand and Rosendale cement was no stronger after six months or a year than the same mortar When loam, to the amount of 10% of the sand, was added. He found that Portland cement briquettes were not weakened by substituting clay for from 2 to 8 per cent of the sand and their weathering qualities were not impaired in two and one half years. For the neat cement at seven and twenty eight days, respectively; and 174 and 295 lb. Per sq. In. For the 1: 3 mortar at seven and twenty-eight days, respectively. Sand. The sand used came from a deposit of glacial drift near the Wabash River at Attica, Indiana. The sand was clean and well graded. The sand of the 1913 Series was somewhat coarser than that of the 1914 lot. The sand used in Group III - 1914 Series - gave a density of a specific gravity of and contained 32 per cent voids.
