Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1800s, Charles Nordhoff forged the shape of modern journalism and profoundly influenced both politicians andpolitics. Principled, activist, investigative, and a champion of the disenfranchised and poor, he was more interested incharacter and results than in personality and credit. And like the blacksmith wielding his hammer, he left us the tangibleproducts of his labors, but few details of himself. With superb research, illuminating insights, and eloquent prose, Carol Frost brings Nordhoff vividly to life: both the man andhis extraordinary impacts on politics, journalism, government, and public discourseimpacts that are still defining publiclife today. Journalists, historians, and activists will find context and inspiration in this captivating and previously untold story, a storythat in many important ways feels like it was written about the events and debates of our own time rather than those ofmore than 100 years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Second World War, the United States would become the leading 'neoliberal' proponent of international trade liberalization. Yet for nearly a century before, American foreign trade policy was dominated by extreme economic nationalism. What brought about this pronounced ideological, political, and economic about-face? How did it affect Anglo-American imperialism? What were the repercussions for the global capitalist order? In answering these questions, The 'Conspiracy' of Free Trade offers the first detailed account of the controversial Anglo-American struggle over empire and economic globalization in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. The book reinterprets Anglo-American imperialism through the global interplay between Victorian free-trade cosmopolitanism and economic nationalism, uncovering how imperial expansion and economic integration were mired in political and ideological conflict. Beginning in the 1840s, this conspiratorial struggle over political economy would rip apart the Republican Party, reshape the Democratic Party, and redirect Anglo-American imperial expansion for decades to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book blends international relations and gender history to provide a new understanding of the Spanish-American and Philippine-American wars. Kristin L. Hoganson shows how gendered ideas about citizenship and political leadership influenced jingoist political leaders` desire to wage these conflicts, and she traces how they manipulated ideas about gender to embroil the nation in war. She argues that racial beliefs were only part of the cultural framework that undergirded U.S. martial policies at the turn of the century. Gender beliefs, also affected the rise and fall of the nation`s imperialist impulse. Drawing on an extensive range of sources, including congressional debates, campaign speeches, political tracts, newspapers, magazines, political cartoons, and the papers of politicians, soldiers, suffragists, and other political activists, Hoganson discusses how concerns about manhood affected debates over war and empire. She demonstrates that jingoist political leaders, distressed by the passing of the Civil War generation and by women`s incursions into electoral politics, embraced war as an opportunity to promote a political vision in which soldiers were venerated as model citizens and women remained on the fringes of political life. These gender concerns not only played an important role in the Spanish-American and Philippine-American wars, they have echoes in later time periods, says the author, and recognizing their significance has powerful ramifications for the way we view international relations. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the final tumultuous years of the nineteenth century the American government abandoned its traditional role in the field of foreign affairs when it adopted a policy of imperial expansion. This drastic change created a lengthy and fascinating, if divisive, national debate between the imperialists and anti-imperialists—with charges and countercharges, presentations and rebuttals filling the pages of the nation's journals and echoing in the halls of Congress and councils of state. This book, which emphasizes the anti-imperialist position, spans the period between the beginning of the debate in 1890 and the demise of the Anti-Imperialist League in 1920. It examines in a basically chronological context the interesting issues, events, ideas, and organizations that were a part of American anti-imperialism, and stresses the thought of the leading anti-imperialists in relation to changing incidents and circumstances. It is based on a wide range of materials and unexploited sources of the period and provides the first comprehensive treatment of the subject. The text, as well as contemporary editorial cartoons, conveys a vivid sense of the spirit and drama of the times. The opponents of imperialism insisted it would yield grave economic, social, military, constitutional, ethical, and other problems, and that it constituted an inherent negation of the finest facets of our governmental heritage. They pointed out that the United States had always stood as the champion of liberty, democracy, equality, and self-government, and that imperialism denied these basic tenets. The anti-imperialists' memorable struggle was long and frustrating, but eventually successful. Although the author concentrates upon the exciting events and ideas of the period in question, the reader will note at many points intriguing parallels with various aspects of contemporary foreign affairs and the reaction to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book showcases various ways in which digital archives allow for new approaches to journalism history. The chapters in this book were selected based on three overall objectives: 1) research that highlights specific concerns within journalism history through digital archives; 2) discussions of digital methodologies, as well as specific applications, that are accessible for journalism scholars with no prior experiences with such approaches; and 3) that journalism history and digital archives are connected in other ways than through specific methods, i.e., that the connection raises larger questions of historiography and power. The contributions address cases and developments in Asia, South and North America and Europe; and range from long-range, big-data, machine-leaning and topic modelling studies of journalistic characteristics and meta-journalistic discourses to critiques of archival practices and access in relation to gender, social movements and poverty. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Digital Journalism.
