Book Synopsis Educational Choices, Transitions and Aspirations in Europe by : Aina Tarabini
Download or read book Educational Choices, Transitions and Aspirations in Europe written by Aina Tarabini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational Choices, Transitions and Aspirations in Europe analyses educational choices and transitions in eight different European countries/regions and provides an engaging means of considering issues of inequality through international comparisons. The book is underpinned by explorations of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, which share the common goal of highlighting and challenging educational inequalities in relation to political imaginings and discursive constructions of notions of aspirations and choice. Beginning with an overview of the theoretical landscape, the book posits ways of understanding transitional experiences through both a social and a political lens. Comprising of chapters that explore these issues within the context of specific countries and at different stages of young people’s transitions, the collection examines the features of different European education systems and how they frame transitions and choices, before providing an overall analysis of systemic, institutional and subjective constraints on these processes. The book uniquely opens and develops an intellectual conversation about different education systems with similar educational challenges and outcomes. Assimilating key issues and solutions, this volume also makes general recommendations for policy and practice that would help to promote greater equity and social justice. The book covers a range of transition points and countries, which should make it essential reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students with an interest in international perspectives on education. It will be particularly useful for those working in education, sociology, social policy, geography, and politics.
Book Synopsis Europe at School by : Norman Newcombe
Download or read book Europe at School written by Norman Newcombe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977. This is a lively account of the day-to-day running of European schools based in five countries - France, West Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. It outlines the organisation of education in these countries, and examines aspects of curriculum, teaching methods, examinations, attitudes of teachers and pupils, buildings, equipment, out-of-school activities, pastoral care, discipline and rules and depicts what it is like to be a pupil or teacher in a European school. The schools discussed are mainly primary and lower secondary grades - the basic compulsory education of each country. Details of working hours, programmes and curricula which are, notably, often government controlled, are given in Appendices. But the author stresses that his aim throughout has been to show how individual schools work and adopt these rules to their own situation. He discusses the relative advantages and drawbacks of different educational systems, and draws his own conclusions about the favourable impressions he gained from many schools and the Awful Warning he saw in a few. This survey throws as much light on schools at home as on those in Europe and suggests that we have a good deal to learn from our neighbours.

Rights and values, pluralism and identity, justice and efficacy, autonomy and tradition, and integration and toleration cannot always be balanced without the loss of something valuable. This volume of essays tackles such dilemmas from two perspectives. To begin, major contemporary theorists rethink the place of religion in the public sphere from republican, liberal and critical-theoretical viewpoints. Contributors then bring together theory and practice to better conceptualize and assess the latest developments in European jurisprudence with respect to religion.

Moreover, this book identifies and examines relevant key research issues, building a conceptual framework drawing on the application of education and socio-economic development and growth process, enabling a comparative analysis in European level, explaining also any related socio-economic consequences. This book also presents a survey of the choices concerning education policy regarding development and efficiency enhancement, describing the instruments, the actors involved, the actions undertaken, and those which, although promoted in the context of other policies, affect the same channels or pursue similar aims. Moreover, this book explores and studies core dimensions of the interaction between education, research and development, efficiency, new paradigms, methods and techniques along with socio-economic links. Overall, this book describes the main kinds of policy interventions that are implemented, providing at the same time some useful elements, in order to understand the assumptions and theories which underpin them. This book fills a gap in education literature by exploring and studying various dimensions of the interaction between one of the most important socio-economic aspects, namely education, and interactions between related factors (both theoretically and empirically). Special focus is put on the appreciation of the ways in which education activities and policies change and adapt in the presence of new constraints of changing configurations of the knowledge-based economy combined with the emergence and adaptation of institutional or economic structures. Within this framework, this book acts as a platform for theoretical and empirical research, rendering a creative source for motivation, scientific dialogue, collaborative approaches, as well as knowledge creation and dissemination. To achieve its aims, the book consists of seven chapters by fifteen expert contributors.
