Book excerpt: "This project is the bi-literacy narrative and autoethnography of a novice English teacher who earned the undergraduate degree in English Language at King Abdulazziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The author offers a brief literacy narrative of her experience learning Arabic in girls' schools on a military base in Tabuk in northern Saudi Arabia and at the university. Through strategic contemplation, she reflects on her mother's illiteracy, which was common for women of her mother's generation, while focusing on her mother's strengths, especially her commitment to educating her six children--all of whom have earned college degrees. In the autoethnography, she traces her growth as a teacher and her interest in applying Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to the education of women in Saudi Arabia, focusing on creating materials that reinforce Islamic values. She offers 11 written artifacts created during her graduate studies as well as three sample lessons she designed in her curriculum seminar and on lesson co-created by her and her thesis chair and internship supervisor. Rather than including just the four traditional macro-skills--reading, writing, speaking, and listening--she adds viewing and visually representing (Tompkins, 2016). In so doing, she refined and expanded basic CLT--sometimes described as a "fuzzy" method by applying the NCTE whole language educational philosophy to her original curriculum based on biographies of women"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: The need for cross-cultural communication forced a number of changes in the education systems of Europe and the Middle East: in Europe in general, and in Britain in particular, social and economic changes led to fundamental reforms in teaching methodologies culminating in communicative teaching. The latter became an important feature in British schools in the l96Os and remains so, both for the whole curriculum and particularly in the area of language teaching, in either Modern (foreign) languages or English. Similarly social and economic changes in the Middle East in general, and in Saudi Arabia in particular, led to a number of changes in school curricula and teaching materials. Changes in the area of language teaching in Saudi Arabia did not, however, reflect the country's need for communication, despite the wide use of communicative English in the Saudi home, street, and workplace. This research sets out to establish the relevance of the communicative approach to the Saudi education system and its usefulness in bridging the gap between the reality ìn the street' and classroom practice. Such an attempt is particularly pertinent in the aftermath of the Gulf War which highlighted the need for communication, often in English, between Saudi Arabia and the international community. The research is therefore two-fold: It reviews and analyses, in Part One, the main methodological terms required to understand the concept of communicative teaching as developed in Europe. Such a review highlights the importance of communicative competence to the communicative approach to language teaching. Secondly the research provides, in Parts Two and Three, an overview of communicative practice in Britain, where communicative teaching has been applied for the whole curriculum since the l96Os. A survey of the Saudi education system, in Part Three, shows that, despite some similarities - between, on the one hand, changes that led to communicative pedagogies in Britain, and, on the other, social and economic changes in Saudi Arabia that led to some changes in educational practices - communicative teaching is not yet featured in Saudi education. Data drawn from two questionnaires, designed for this thesis, enables us to assess what features of communicative pedagogies could be relevant to the.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the historical development of major language teaching methods in terms of theoretical principles and classroom procedures, and provides a critical evaluation of each. Drawing from seminal, foundational texts and from critical commentaries made by various scholars, Kumaravadivelu examines the profession's current transition from method to postmethod and, in the process, elucidates the relationship between theory, research, and practice. The chief objective is to help readers see the pattern that connects language, learning, teaching methods, and postmethod perspectives. In this book, Kumaravadivelu: *brings together a critical vision of L2 learning and teaching--a vision founded at once on historical development and contemporary thought; *connects findings of up-to-date research in L2 learning with issues in L2 teaching thus making the reader aware of the relationship between theory, research and practice; *presents language teaching methods within a coherent framework of language-, learner-, and learning-centered pedagogies, thus helping the reader to see how they are related to each other; *shows how the three categories of methods evolved historically leading ultimately (and inevitably) to the emergence of a postmethod condition; and *provides the reader with a solid background in several interconnected areas of L2 pedagogy, such as concepts of competence, input factors, intake processes, interactional modifications, and instructional design. Understanding Language Teaching: From Method to Postmethod is intended for an international audience of teacher educators, practicing teachers and graduate students, researchers, curriculum planners, and materials designers in the field of second and foreign language teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As English gains prominence as the language of higher education across the world, many institutions and lecturers are becoming increasingly concerned with the implications of this trend for the quality of university teaching and learning. With an innovative approach in both theme and scope, this book addresses four major competencies that are essential to ensure the effectiveness of English-medium higher education: creativity, critical thinking, autonomy and motivation. It offers an integrated perspective, both theoretical and practical, which defines these competences from different angles within ELT and Applied Linguistics, while also exploring their points of contact and applications to classroom routines. This approach is intended to provide practical guidance and inspiration, in the form of pedagogical proposals, examples of teaching practice and cutting-edge research by scholars and university teachers from all over the world. To that end, a leading specialist in the field introduces each of the four competencies, explaining concepts accessibly and synthetically, exposing false myths, presenting an updated state of the art, and opening windows for future studies. These introductions are followed by practitioner chapters written by teachers and scholars from different cultures and university contexts, who reflect on their experience and/or research and share effective procedures and suggestions for the university class with English as a vehicle for instruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an overview of current issues in English as an International Language (EIL) education and critical intercultural literacy pedagogy. The different chapters are inspired by ‘critical interculturality’ as a decolonial project that seeks to interrogate the structures, conditions, and mechanisms of colonial power relations that still pervade our increasingly globalising postcolonial societies; they tend to perpetuate forms of discrimination such as sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism and linguicism. Divided into five sections, this collection critically examines English Language Teaching textbooks’ integration of intercultural dimensions, the promotion of intercultural literacy in teacher education programs, the management of cultural diversity in multicultural professional/business and educational situations, and the ‘decolonisation’ of the curriculum in various global educational and professional situations. The book presents a range of linguistic approaches as a means of examining the nature of intercultural communication pertaining in EIL varied international contexts. The chapters also reflect a wide diversity of perspectives from local contexts with global relevance and applicability. This book is an indispensable reference for business leaders, international relations stakeholders, education and linguistics students, educationists, textbook designers, teacher trainers and researchers of language and culture, critical pedagogy, multiculturalism studies, TESOL and English as a lingua franca (ELF).

This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook discusses the theoretical and disciplinary background to the study of English-medium instruction (EMI) in higher education worldwide. It highlights issues relating to EMI pedagogy, varying motivations for EMI education, and the delivery of EMI in diverse contexts across the world. The spread of English as a teaching medium and the lingua franca of the academic world has been the subject of various debates in recent years on the perceived hegemony of the English language and the ‘domain loss’ of non-English languages in academic communication. Encompassing a wide range of contributions to the field of EMI, the chapters of this Handbook are arranged in four distinct parts: Part I provides an overview of English-medium instruction in higher education worldwide; Part II focusses on EMI in Europe; Part III on EMI in the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa; and Part IV on EMI in the Asian region. The overall scope and level of expertise of this Handbook provides an unrivalled overview of this field of education. It serves as an essential reference for many courses dealing with applied linguistics, English language education, multilingualism, sociolinguistics, and related subjects at many levels of education, including Master’s and PhD-level studies. This Handbook serves as a valuable edition for university libraries across the world and an essential read for many faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate students, educators, and policymakers.
