Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference guide is nr 2 of a series about Dredging Technology and it contains the basic theories and formula's a project engineer needs when acting in the field of dredging projects. It serves as a quick and compact reminder of theories and formulas he needs during preparation, excecution and possibly the handling of a claim during dredging project. The guide is compact and meant to be used on-site. The emphasis of this guide lies on quickly reminding the subjects and being able to quantify the parameters involved. However should there be a need for a more extensive description than a refer is made to the authors tectbook "Dredging Technology". This guide starts with the basic soilmechanic concepts and formulas which are relevant for any dredging project, such as: Soil stability (retaining walls and quick sand condition) , compaction and dilatancy (slope stabilty and cutting forces) . Next the basic fluid mechanic parameters , such as concentration and density, for pumping soil and water are described and also the parameters of waterjets . Formula's for Pump production calculation and Degree of Loading of a Hopperdredge are given. The stability of a pontoon, often used on a dredging project, is explained and formula's for the calulation of the metacenterheight are described. A compact description of theories of a centrifugal dredge pump is given together with a description of the pump drive. Especially the specific impact on a centrifugal pump characteristic by a diesel drive is explained. The effect of the pipeline length on the working point and therefore on the effectiveness of the diesel drive is explained. The effect of a change in the pump impellar diameter or a change in the gear ratio is also explained. These are real practical problems on a dredging project and therefore a general procedure for solving a pump question is given. The suction process with the vacuum and the limiting vacuum and cavitation at the pump entrance is described. This is the most important part of the hydraulic transport process, since it is the starting point of the soil volume production in cubic meter per hour when using a suction dredger. The vacuum production is analysed resulting in an optimisation of the suction production.A compact description of electric generator and motor is given and the difference between DC and AC is explained. The three phase alternating current motor is explained and also the principle of the "Electrical Shaft" is explained. Finally production calculation formula's are given for a cutter suction dredger (CSD) and a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD).

Book excerpt: This book is nr 1 of a series about Dredging Technology. The author ir G.L.M. van der Schrieck has been a researcher in the Dutch Dredging Industry from 1978 to 2015. After starting his working career in 1978 at the Delft Hydraulics Institute he joined HAM Dredging in 1981 as a research engineer till 1988 and from there as Chief Research Officer till 2000. From 2000 until his retirement in 2015 he acted as a freelance research consultant giving master dredging courses at the Delft University and acting as secretary of the Joint Dredging Research Program ordered by the Dutch Dredging Companies. During that period, he wrote this book as a basic guide for master students following his course on Dredging Technology. The contents of the book can be summarised as: " The dredging process, such as excavating, lifting, transporting and depositing spoil and the scientific background to these processes. The possibilities of dredging for the execution of major civil engineering projects." After a general introduction, the application and use of dredgers is described in terms of capacities, workability and tolerances. An overview of dredging projects and the basic Dredging Processes is given and their scientific backgrounds are explained, such as: mechanical cutting of sand clay and rock and hydraulic breaching and erosion of sand. Followed by the suction and discharge processes using diesel and electric driven dredge pumps. Special attention is given to pipeline transport theory and the interaction between pipeline and pump. The process of deposition of the dredged materials in a Hopperdredge or in a reclamation area or hydraulic fill are being explained. The Relationship between soil properties and dredging processes is described together with soil classification and geophysical soil survey methods. Special attention is given to survey subjects such as positioning and depth measurement methods and the calculation of paid and unpaid dredging depth and the dredged volumes. Finally, some special subjects are treated in this book: The Dry Tons Production Measurement System; Tolerances and dredging depth probability distributions; Cost estimate of dredging projects. In the last chapter the book provides the reader with an extensive English-Dutch and Dutch-English glossary of all terms, items, theories, processes, practices and sorts of equipment being used in the dredging industry. As a result, the book supports project engineers from both the contractor as from the client, giving them a solid reference for the technical communication inside their own organisation as well between the client and contractor when dealing with contract issues and claims during dredging projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is derived from chapter 6 from my main book `Dredging Technology Book 1`. In order to keep track of things the section and formula numbers are kept the same with the prefix 6. The Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) is the mayor workhorse of the modern Dredging Industry. During the last decades the load capacity of a single dredger has been increased to over 30-40 thousand cubic meters. This increase of scale kept the price per cubic meter low and thus enabled large scale projects such as: Chek Lap Kok Hong Kong Airfield , Dutch Beach Replenishment Program and the Maasvlakte 2 Rotterdam Harbour Extension. The sand production of a TSHD not only depends on the load capacity of the ship but also on the suction capacity of the pumps and dragheads. This is especially the case if there is a short transport distance making the suction time the mayor part of the whole cycle. However, there is one more important production factor: the settling velocity of the sand in the Hopper. To give you an idea of the problem: When the average grainsize of the sand is as low as 100 microns or less most of the sand will not even settle in the hopper but will flow direct overboard as soon as the overflow level has been reached. In this case one better stop the suction process when the overflow level has been reached and start sailing. The first part of is book explains how to optimize the cycle production of the TSHD. The use of a variable overflow height is described. Also the difference in optimizing between a cycle with a dump of the load and a cycle using the self emptying pumpsystem is explained. The second part deals with explaining and define the relevant parameters like : Restload, Loading rate, Degree of loading , Overflow loss, Hopper load parameter, Grain fall velocity , Hindred settling, Constant tonnage or volume system, Hopper design. From these the Hindred settling caused by the near bed sand concentration is one of the most important phenomena to reckon with. As shown above it is of great importance to know in advance what the max settling rate and overflow loss will be during the loading phase of a cycle. Therefore the last part of this book describes the development over the last decades of the "insight" in this settling process. It is amazing to see what completely different sedimentation models have been suggested over the years ! Lucky for us the large scale tests in the PhD promotion research carried out by prof. ir. C. van Rhee gave a very clear and well proven description of what really happens in the hopper. Moreover , his computational model resulted in an easy to handle correlation formula for the estimation of the overflow loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third book of my "Dredging Technology " series contains a selection of hydraulic subjects also covered in my main book "Dredging Technology" . The reason for publishing these subjects in a separate book is to make them separately available at a lower price to the public of Civil Engineers. Besides theory of waterjets and waterjetpumps the book describes the possibilities for scaling hydraulic and soil mechanical processes, such as underwater excavation, lift, transport and deposit of sand, clay and rocks or stones and the scientific background of the scaling rules for each of these processes. For the formulas used for these processes reference is made to the previous sections and chapters of the main book "Dredging Technology". The theories for waterjets and waterjetpump are reviewed in the first two sections of the book. In the third section of the book the concepts of Scale Modelling such as Similarity, Scaling Effects, Scaling Factors and Scaling Rules are being explained. Also the concept of Geometric similarity and Dynamic Similarity and the use of Dimensionless Indicators is explained. The application of the Scale Modelling Technique is shown for the following under water processes:1) Settling of grains and/or stones 2) Breaching Sand 3) High speed Pick-up and erosion of sand 4) Discharging sand under water / slope instability by water overpressure 5) Sand cutting under water 6) Cutting clay. Also some examples of scale tests with Dredgers are given:1) Mixing process of coarse material in a rotary cutterhead 2) Breaching of the sand load in a trailing suction hopper dredger using water jets. More than one scenario is given: A) Using prototype sand or B) Modelling headwall velocity at Froude scale 3) Mixture formation in a rotary cutterhead in (plastic) clay. Here also two scenario's are given: A) Investigation of the possibilities for the mixture of clay or B) Investigation of cutting forces in clay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Chapter 13 of: "Dredging Technology Book1: The Basics" In the underwater hydraulic engineering one often needs more insight in the underwater processes. A very good way to gain this insight is performing relatively cheap small scale tests in clear trough visible water. These tests will help finding solutions for better working methods. Watching the underwater processes and knowing the scale factors will give you a good picture of your problem and will help you finding /discovering a solution or even a break trough. The best way to convince you is the following example: . A contractor used a large diameter water jet with a nozzle mounted on the drag head of a large trailing suction hopper dredge. Sailing slowly ahead with the nozzle just above the bottom the aim was to erode a trench in the sand by jetting about 90 degrees top view side wards and 30-45 degrees vertically down into the sand bottom. The premise was the jet would erode the sand to the desired trench depth and the jet would discharge the sand side wards away from the trench. A simple test in a small fish aquarium having a sand bottom and clear water using a horizontal moving water jet attached on the laboratory mains showed a completely different picture! The water jet appeared to dig indeed into the sand but did not transport the sand out of the trench. Instead the jet stayed in a narrow sleeve as wide as the jet diameter and the jet beam stayed in this sleeve 90 degrees backwards opposite of the sailing direction. So in fact the water jet stayed in the plane in the shade of the water jet. Shortly after the passage of the jet the sand on top of the sleeve fell down in the sleeve and most of the eroded sand stayed in the "trench" ! The result was a very limited trench depth. Clearly this wasn't the right working method. I hope this story convinces you to make use of the small scale modelling technique.
