Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cervantes is regarded as the author of the first novel and the inventor of fiction. From its publication in 1605, Don Quixote—recently named the world’s best book by authors from 54 countries—has been widely translated and imitated. Among its less acknowledged imitations are stories in children’s literature. In context of English adaptation and critical response this book explores the noble and “mad” adventures retold for children by distinguished writers and artists in Edwardian books, collections, home libraries, schoolbooks and picture books. More recent adaptations including comics and graphic novels deviate from traditional retellings. All speak to the knight-errant’s lasting influence and appeal to children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Unfinished Manner examines the fragments produced by European writers and artists in the eighteenth century and earlier, fragments that were not the result of an inability to finish either texts or buildings but rather deliberate refusals to make the traditional gestures of conclusion. Most books published in the past few years on the fragment and the unfinished see it as a peculiarly "Romantic" early nineteenth-century exclusively poetic form. Elizabeth Wanning Harries argues, instead, that the fragment not only had a long history beginning with Petrarch but also played an important part in the history of the novel and other kinds of prose." "Conceptualizing the fragment as a genre, Harries sheds a new light on the practice of reading fiction and "reading" ruins in the eighteenth century, complex practices that often require oscillation between two perspectives or ways of reading. She also explores the gendering of forms in eighteenth-century aesthetics - the perception of fragments as feminine (beautiful) rather than masculine (sublime) - and speculates on the fragment's meaning within the context of eighteenth-century social mythologies as well as those of later eras. Finally, she rereads Coleridge's "Kubla Khan" to show its roots in eighteenth-century fragmentary textual practices." "The Unfinished Manner takes up the questions that arise when writers and artists treat apparently unfinished forms - fragments, ruins, torsos, sketches - as finished, both in the eighteenth century and, implicitly, today. Harries's treatments of Petrarch as the initiator of the fragment tradition, of Sterne in relation to biblical criticism, of Coleridge's "Kubla Khan" in relation to Sterne's Tristram Shandy, and of fragments in their relation to the feminine are original and revisionary contributions that seriously challenge some critical assumptions about Romanticism and its relationship to eighteenth-century texts."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: The Age of Silver advances a "horizontal" method of comparative literature and applies this approach to analyze the multiple emergences of early realism and novelistic modernity in Eastern and Western cultural spheres from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. Naming this era of economic globalization the Age of Silver, Ning Ma emphasizes the bullion flow from South America and Japan to China through international commerce, and argues that the resultant transcontinental monetary and commercial co-evolutions stimulated analogous socioeconomic shifts and emergent novelistic realisms. The main texts addressed within include The Plum in the Golden Vase (China), Don Quixote (Spain), The Life of an Amorous Man (Japan), and Robinson Crusoe (England). These Eastern and Western narratives indicate from their own geographical vantage points commercial expansions' stimulation of social mobility and larger processes of cultural destabilization. Their realist tendencies are underlain with politically critical functions and connote "heteroglossic" national imaginaries. This horizontal argument realigns novelistic modernity with a multipolar global context and reestablishes commensurabilities between Eastern and Western literary histories. The Age of Silver challenges the unilateral equation between globalization and modernity with westernization, and foregrounds a polycentric mode of global early modernity for pluralizing the genealogy of world literature and historical transcultural relations.

Book excerpt: When released in 2003, The Room, an obscure, self-financed relationship drama by an eccentric self-taught filmmaker named Tommy Wiseau, should have been completely forgotten. Yet nearly two decades later, "the worst movie ever made"—as many a critic would have it—has become the most popular cult film since The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In You Are Tearing Me Apart, Lisa!, contributors explore this priceless cultural artifact, offering fans and film buffs critical insight into the movie's various meanings, historical context, and place in the cult canon. Even if by complete accident, The Room touches on many issues of modern concern, including sincerity, authenticity, badness, artistic value, gender relations, Americanness, Hollywood conventions, masculinity, and even the meaning of life. Revealing the timeless, infamous power of Wiseau's The Room, You Are Tearing Me Apart, Lisa! is a deeply entertaining deconstruction of an original work of all-American failure.

Book excerpt: James Montgomery's new translation of Don Quixote is the fourth already in the twenty-first century, and it stands with the best of them. It pays particular attention to what may be the hardest aspect of Cervantes's novel to render into English: the humorous passages, particularly those that feature a comic and original use of language. Cervantes would be proud. --Howard Mancing, Professor of Spanish, Purdue University and Vice President, Cervantes Society of America
