Book excerpt: DIVAN of MAHSATI Ruba'iyat of the Great Persian Female Poet Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. We know little of Mahsati Ganjavi's life (b.1089, d. after 1159) except that she lived in Ganjeh when Sultan Sanjar reigned and as she was a poet at his court she would have known Anvari. She was a court, dervish and ribald poet. She knew Nizami (she is said to have been buried in his mausoleum) and Omar Khayyam... and like Omar mainly composed only in the ruba'i form and must be considered not only a master of that form but also to have helped to revolutionize it. She was an influence on perhaps Iran's greatest female poet Jahan Khatun of Shiraz and Iran's greatest satirist Obeyd Zakani. She was famous and also infamous for her truly liberated behaviour. Included in the Introduction are the life of Mahsati and a history of the ruba'i and examples by its greatest exponents. Selected Bibliography. This is by far the largest collection of her poems translated into English (being 250 0f 300 that survived). The correct rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these immortal, courageous four-line poems. Large Print (18pt) & Large Format (8" x 10") Edition Pages 309. Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. "It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator of many mystical works in English into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart. "Smith has probably put together the greatest collection of literary facts and history concerning Hafiz." Daniel Ladinsky (Penguin Books author). Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre and many others, as well as his own poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and a dozen screenplays. Tahirih (meaning 'concealed'), also called Qurrat ul-ayn (meaning: 'freshness of the eye') was Zarrin Taj Fatima and this extremely beautiful and intelligent woman led a short and stormy life. Born (like Obeyd Zakani) in Qazvin she became a devotee of the Bab, who from Shiraz had given his prophetic message that would later appear in the form of Baha-ul-lah, the founder of the Baha'is and the self-proclaimed Imam Mahdi (Messiah). She was not only a poet but also wrote prose, knew literature, religious laws and interpretations of the Koran and lectured... very unusual for a woman of that time and previous times in Iran. She travelled to Kerbala and Baghdad spreading the message of the Bab. In Baghdad she was arrested by the governor and sent back to Iran. She became the first woman to appear unveiled before a crowd of women and men. She returned to Qazvin after the Bab was killed and was imprisoned in Tehran. She was thirty-six when sentenced to death after the Shah, who had proposed marriage to her, which she rejected was assassinated, leading to a massacre of the Baha'is. She was influenced in her poetry by Rumi, Jami and especially Hafiz whose winebringer masnavi influenced by Nizami greatly influenced hers. All her poems translated here are for the first time in the correct poetic form. Introduction on her Life, Times & Poetry & on the Forms of Poetry she used. Selected Bibliography. Book excerpt: DIVAN of RUDAKITranslation & Introduction Paul SmithAbu 'Abd Allah Ja'far ibn Muhammad Rudaki (858-941) the 'father of Persian Poetry' and possibly the ruba'i, was born in the village of Rudak near Samarkand. First a wandering 'dervish' poet/minstrel he later served at the court of the Samanids of Bokhara. Nasr ibn Ahmad summoned him to his court and he prospered there amassing great wealth. He had 200 slaves in his retinue... and 400 camels carried his belongings when he travelled. In 937 he fell out of favour at court (and was blinded at this time as some commentators suggest) after the death of the prime-minister who had supported him. His life ended in abject poverty, forgotten by the world at that time, perhaps the reason why so much of his vast output of 1,300,000 couplets, only 75 rubai's, ghazals, qasidas and qit'as survive (most are here translated, the most published). Rudaki's poetry is about the passage of time, old age, death, fortune's fickleness, importance of the matters of the heart, the need to be happy. Although he praised kings, nobles and heroes... his greatest love was knowledge and experience and he is at times considered to be an early Persian Sufi Poet and is often called 'The Father of Persian Poetry'. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept in this modern translation, as well as the beauty and meaning of these beautiful poems. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" Illustrated, 179 pages.COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'."It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart."I was very impressed with the beauty of these books." Dr. R.K. Barz. Faculty of Asian Studies, Australian National University."Smith has probably put together the greatest collection of literary facts and history concerning Hafiz." Daniel Ladinsky (Penguin Books author).
