Book Synopsis Picture as Spectre in Diderot, Proust, and Deleuze by : Thomas Baldwin
Download or read book Picture as Spectre in Diderot, Proust, and Deleuze written by Thomas Baldwin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The possibility of ekphrasis, the verbal representation of visual imagery, is fundamental to all writing about art, be it art criticism, theory or a passage in a novel. But there is no consensus concerning how such representation works. Some take it for granted that writing about art can result in a precise match between words and visual images. For others, ekphrasis amounts to a kind of virtuoso rivalry, in which the writer aims to outdo the pictorial image that is being described. In close readings of Diderot, Proust and Deleuze, Thomas Baldwin shows how ekphrasis can create a spectral effect. In other words, ekphrastic spectres do not function as fully present stand-ins for given works of art; nor can they be reduced to the status of passive and absent others. Baldwin also explores the ways in which the works of Diderot, Proust and Deleuze inhabit each other as ghostly influences."
Book Synopsis Sensibility, Reading and Illustration by : Ann Lewis
Download or read book Sensibility, Reading and Illustration written by Ann Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eighteenth-century sensibilite has always been controversial. In fact, the term itself refers to complex forms of physical and emotional responsiveness, and Lewis's study investigates the fictional exploration of various key problems of sentimental response that were at the heart of eighteenth-century moral, epistemological and aesthetic debates. These are analysed in conjunction with some of the actual (often emotional) responses that the term, its fictions and images have provoked through time, including an indispensable survey of the varying construction of sensibilite as an object of study, and the polemics subtending its definition. The verbal evocation of the visual in the form of 'spectacles' and 'signs' was understood in the eighteenth century as having an especially powerful impact. Lewis provides a new reading of the theme of sensibility by analysing the 'textual images' in three best-selling novels from the mid-century: Graffigny's Lettres d'une Peruvienne, Marivaux's La Vie de Marianne and Rousseau's Julie. The examination of a largely neglected corpus of illustrations, understood as readings of each text, provides striking new evidence of the complexity, thematic richness and duplicity of these spectacles, whose power to provoke different reactions is perhaps their most interesting characteristic."

Book Synopsis La Vie d'Etienne le Jeune par Étienne le Diacre by : Marie-France Auzépy
Download or read book La Vie d'Etienne le Jeune par Étienne le Diacre written by Marie-France Auzépy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Stephen the Younger is one of the rare sources for Byzantium in the ’Dark Ages’ and one of the key witnesses to the history of Iconoclasm. This book presents a new edition of the text, together with a French translation and commentary, and an important introduction. Stephen was a hermit, killed in 765 at the order of the emperor Constantine V; his Life was written in 809, some forty years after the 7th Ecumenical Council, Nicaea II, at which Orthodoxy was affirmed. Professor Auzépy shows how the Life reflects the politics of the era, both those of the patriarchate on which the author depended, and of the female monastery near which Stephen had lived, and transforms the probable victim of a failed political plot into a Christ-like figure martyred by a diabolic emperor.

This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pontius Meropius Paulinus (ca 353-431), one of the greatest poets of Late Latin Poetry and author of an important correspondence, was born in a wealthy family of the Gallo-Roman aristocracy in Bordeaux. After his spectacular conversion to asceticism and his sacerdotal ordination, he set up definitively as a monk in Italy, in Campanian Nola besides the tomb of St. Felix. There, Paulinus devoted his considerable fortune to the restructuring of the monumental complex which has appeared around this holy place, since the early years of the fourth century and mainly a church. This book is a literary and spiritual study of the description of this complex (carm. 27 and 28 and epist. 32), an other way of edification (the edification of the soul in temple for her creator.) A careful comparison with archaeological testimonies must help estimate the status of Paulinus’monumental descriptions.
Book Synopsis Point, Dot, Period… The Dynamics of Punctuation in Text and Image by : Laurence Petit
Download or read book Point, Dot, Period… The Dynamics of Punctuation in Text and Image written by Laurence Petit and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Point, Dot, Period… The Dynamics of Punctuation in Text and Image is a collection of twelve previously unpublished essays which explore the fundamental role played by punctuation in the two semiotic fields of text and image. Whilst drawing upon a wide range of material, including painting, engraving, photography, video art, poetry, fiction, and journalism, each essay contributes to the exploration of singular uses of punctuation which highlight the complexity of what remains in all cases a silent, and yet particularly eloquent, mode of expression. By bringing together authors from a variety of fields, such as linguistics, literary studies, and art criticism, at a time when the relation between text and image occupies a prominent place in the critical landscape, this volume offers new insights into the possibility and nature of their encounter, and invites the reader to focus on the material aspect of visual and textual creation. This collection also offers an original approach to the works of some major artists and canonical authors, whilst simultaneously making room for emerging talents.
Book Synopsis George Sand: Voix, image, texte by : Nigel Harkness
Download or read book George Sand: Voix, image, texte written by Nigel Harkness and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2011 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Universal Grammar and Narrative Form by : David Herman
Download or read book Universal Grammar and Narrative Form written by David Herman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a major rethinking of the functions, methods, and aims of narrative poetics, David Herman exposes important links between modernist and postmodernist literary experimentation and contemporary language theory. Ultimately a search for new tools for narrative theory, his work clarifies complex connections between science and art, theory and culture, and philosophical analysis and narrative discourse. Following an extensive historical overview of theories about universal grammar, Herman examines Joyce's Ulysses, Kafka's The Trial, and Woolf's Between the Acts as case studies of modernist literary narratives that encode grammatical principles which were (re)fashioned in logic, linguistics, and philosophy during the same period. Herman then uses the interpretation of universal grammar developed via these modernist texts to explore later twentieth-century cultural phenomena. The problem of citation in the discourses of postmodernism, for example, is discussed with reference to syntactic theory. An analysis of Peter Greenaway's The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover raises the question of cinematic meaning and draws on semantic theory. In each case, Herman shows how postmodern narratives encode ideas at work in current theories about the nature and function of language. Outlining new directions for the study of language in literature, Universal Grammar and Narrative Form provides a wealth of information about key literary, linguistic, and philosophical trends in the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis Image et récit by : Jean-Michel Lacroix
Download or read book Image et récit written by Jean-Michel Lacroix and published by Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle. This book was released on 1993 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Formes Du Salut by : Emmanuelle Mercier
Download or read book Formes Du Salut written by Emmanuelle Mercier and published by Presses universitaires de Louvain. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
