In der Zusammenarbeit unterstützten und ergänzten sich Textdichter und Komponist in gegenseitigen Anregungen. Das Ergebnis war Mozarts Meisterwerk „Die Zauberflöte“. Sie wurde am 30. September 1791 in Wien uraufgeführt, Emanuel Schikaneder selbst sang den Papageno, Mozarts Schwägerin Josefa Hofer spielte die Königin der Nacht. Der Erfolg war außerordentlich und füllte noch jahrelang Schikaneders Kassen. Mozart hingegen ging dabei leer aus, neun Wochen nach der Uraufführung starb er und wurde, da völlig mittellos, im Armengrab beigesetzt. Die vorliegende Arbeit bietet einen Überblick über das Textbuch und die dramatische Konzeption der Zauberflöte von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Doch was genau unterscheidet die beiden Gattungen im Einzelnen? Könnte eine Oper nicht schlichtweg ein Konzert mit Schauspiel sein? Oder handelt es sich vielmehr um ein gesungenes Theaterstück? Welche Bedeutung kommt jeder Einzelnen zu und wie greifen sie ineinander? Dies will die vorliegende Arbeit zunächst durch theoretische Ausführungen zeigen, bevor deren Ergebnisse anhand von konkreten Produktionsausschnitten veranschaulicht werden. In diesem Fall wurden dafür Beispiele aus Mozarts „Zauberflöte“ – einem der „publikumsgewinnensten Werke der gesamten Opernwelt“ gewählt. Aufgrund ihrer Popularität ist es auch nicht sehr verwunderlich, dass über diese große deutsche Oper eine nahezu unüberblickbare Menge an Literatur, die sich insbesondere mit dem Inhalt und seiner Deutung, Freimaurersymbolik und den ägyptischen Elementen sowie der musikalischen Gestaltung und der Inszenierung beschäftigt, existiert.
