Book excerpt: Eihei Dogen (1200-1253), among the first to transmit Zen Buddhism from China to Japan and founder of the important Soto School, was not only a profoundly influential and provocative Zen philosopher but also one of the most stimulating figures in Japanese letters. Kazuaki Tanahashi, collaborating with several other Zen authorities, has produced sensitive and accurate translations of Dogen's most important texts. Moon in a Dewdrop contains the key essays of the great master, as well as extensive background materials that will help Western readers to approach this significant work. There is also a selection of Dogen's poetry, most of which has not appeared in English translation before. Dogen's thought runs counter to conventional logic, employing paradoxical language and startling imagery. It illuminates such fundamental concerns as the nature of time, existence, life, death, the self, and what is beyond self.

Book excerpt: The Japanese poet-recluse Ryokan (1758–1831) is one of the most beloved figures of Asian literature, renowned for his beautiful verse, exquisite calligraphy, and eccentric character. Deceptively simple, Ryokan's poems transcend artifice, presenting spontaneous expressions of pure Zen spirit. Like his contemporary Thoreau, Ryokan celebrates nature and the natural life, but his poems touch the whole range of human experience: joy and sadness, pleasure and pain, enlightenment and illusion, love and loneliness. This collection of translations reflects the full spectrum of Ryokan's spiritual and poetic vision, including Japanese haiku, longer folk songs, and Chinese-style verse. Fifteen ink paintings by Koshi no Sengai (1895–1958) complement these translations and beautifully depict the spirit of this famous poet.

Book excerpt: Critical Praise for Hyatt Carter's previous book Thinking Is the Best Way to Travel Hyatt Carter has now shared stations along the way of his intellectual experiences in his Thinking is the Best Way to Travel: Essays along the Journey. Carter is that rare creature, an independent polymath, the scarcity of which in the epoch of specialization has severely scarred contemporary life. There are dabblers aplenty, but the polymath in full flow is an exciting phenomenon. David Spooner, author of The Metaphysics of Insects and Other Essays Thinking Is the Best Way to Travel was not just any journey, it was the best kind of vacation, a vacation from myself and the usual ways I see and know myself and the world around me. I am intrigued by life-development transitions and how they facilitate new structures of reasoning and the freedom to find new mutualities of self-other knowing. This book is a wonderful way of making that journey without purposefully intending to do any of this. Dr. William Kent Larkin, author of Growing The Positive Mind and Director of The Applied Neuroscience Institute The best thing about the book is that it is enjoyable to read. It proceeds at a measured pace, without tight, convoluted thinking that one has to fight his way through. I like the cadence; it has a nice pace and rhythm. This is an interesting book that gives one the sense of a life spent in thoughtful reading and reflection. W. K. Maples, mathematician, Marshall Space Flight Center Hyatt Carter has a skillful way of making philosophical concepts easy to comprehend. I find myself taking notes while reading, looking up some of cited authors on the Internet, and ordering their books. Ramón Barayón, author of A Planetary Sojourn and A Death in Zamora

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume endeavors to make a contribution to contemporary Whitehead studies by clarifying his axiological process metaphysics, including his theory of values, concept of aesthetic experience, and doctrine of beauty, along with his philosophy of art, literature and poetry. Moreover, it establishes an east-west dialogue focusing on how Alfred North Whitehead’s process aesthetics can be clarified by the traditional Japanese Buddhist sense of evanescent beauty. As this east-west dialogue unfolds it is shown that there are many striking points of convergence between Whitehead’s process aesthetics and the traditional Japanese sense of beauty. However, the work especially focuses on two of Whitehead’s aesthetic categories, including the penumbral beauty of darkness and the tragic beauty of perishability, while further demonstrating parallels with the two Japanese aesthetic categories of yûgen and aware. It is clarified how both Whitehead and the Japanese tradition have articulated a poetics of evanescence that celebrates the transience of aesthetic experience and the ephemerality of beauty. Finally it is argued that both Whitehead and Japanese tradition develop an aesthetics of beauty as perishability culminating in a religio-aesthetic vision of tragic beauty and its reconciliation in the supreme ecstasy of peace or nirvana.

Book excerpt: THIS VOLUME contains a complete translation of Dōgen's collection of thirty-one-syllable Japanese poetry, or waka, along with a translation of a representative selection of his Chinese verse, or kanshi. Although Dōgen is generally considered to be more of a philosopher than a poet, his verse has great value for several reasons. First, the poems, most of which were composed on the mountain peak of Eiheiji Temple (the Temple of Eternal Peace, as pictured on the front cover), are beautiful, displaying Dōgen's remarkable facility with language. Second, the Japanese and Chinese collections illuminate key aspects of his life and thought not revealed in his prose writings, including his trips to China and Kamakura, his feelings about Kyoto while living in Eiheiji in the northern provinces, and his feelings about death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This text consists of Master Dōgen's own words, albeit through the filter of his Dharma successor, Koun Ejō, who wrote down the spoken words of his teacher. The title of the text, Shōbōgenzō Zuimonki, can be translated as "True Dharma Eye Treasury: Record of Things Heard." It also distinct from Dōgen's magnum opus (called just Shōbōgenzō) in that it consists of relatively straightforward and accessible teachings, making more limited use of the allusion, word-play, and metaphor that characterize the essays that comprise Shōbōgenzō. Record of Things Heard can be read as a highly practical manual of Buddhist practice, essentially a primer of Sōtō Zen. Dōgen's words express fundamental aspects of Buddhist practice in terms that are both concrete and straightforward in Japanese society in the thirteenth century. Among the many topics covered, Dōgen especially emphasizes the following points: seeing impermanence, departing from the ego-centered self, being free from greed, giving up self-attachment, following the guidance of a true teacher, and the practice of zazen, specifically shikantaza, or "just sitting". Record of Things Heard is a bilingual edition with extensive notes which help to provide the reader with a new way of approaching the text. As bonus material, this edition also includes translations and commentary of Dōgen's luminously evocative waka poetry, formerly published under the title White Snow on Bright Leaves. The book also includes a selection of Dogen's waka poetry with commentary"--

Book excerpt: The classic Buddhist text in three engaging new translations, with commentary from contemporary Zen masters. One of the greatest religious practitioners and philosophers of the East, Eihei Dogen Zenji (1200–1253) is today thought of as the founder of the Soto school of Zen. A deep thinker and writer, he was deeply involved in monastic methods and in integrating Zen realization into daily life. At times The Shobogenzo was profoundly difficult, and he worked on it over his entire life, revising and expanding, producing a book that is today thought to be one of the highest manifestations of Buddhist thought ever produced. Dogen’s Genjo Koan (Actualization of Reality) is the first chapter in that book, and for many followers it might be thought to contain the gist of Dogen’s work—it is one of the groundwork texts of Zen Buddhism, standing easily alongside The Diamond Sutra, The Heart Sutra, and a small handful of others. Our unique edition of Dogen’s Genjo Koan contains three separate translations and several commentaries by a wide variety of Zen masters. Nishiari Bokusan, Shohaku Okamura, Shunryu Suzuki, Kosho Uchiyama. Sojun Mel Weitsman, Kazuaki Tanahashi, and Dairyu Michael Wenger all have contributed to our presentation of this remarkable work. There can be no doubt that understanding and integrating this text will have a profound effect on anyone’s life and practice.

This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with a reflection on dichotomies in comparative studies of Chinese and Western literature and aesthetics. Critiquing an oppositional paradigm, Ming Dong Gu argues that despite linguistic and cultural differences, the two traditions share much common ground in critical theory, aesthetic thought, metaphysical conception, and reasoning. Focusing on issues of language, writing, and linguistics; metaphor, metonymy, and poetics; mimesis and representation; and lyricism, expressionism, creativity, and aesthetics, Gu demonstrates that though ways of conception and modes of expression may differ, the two traditions have cultivated similar aesthetic feelings and critical ideas capable of fusing critical and aesthetic horizons. With a two-way dialogue, this book covers a broad spectrum of critical discourses and uncovers fascinating connections among a wide range of thinkers, theorists, scholars, and aestheticians, thereby making a significant contribution to bridging the aesthetic divide and envisioning world theory and global aesthetics.
