Chief amongst the technology used in higher education are Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Blackboard, Sakai, and CANVAS. Urban community colleges have also embraced LMS, but with student bodies that often lack regular access to or extensive experience with using technology for socio-economic or generational reasons, the outcomes from using LMS can be very different to those experienced at four-year institutions that generally serve a more affluent, traditionally-aged demographic. In particular, students in developmental courses, or those courses designed for individuals who could not test into college-level courses, can be particularly challenged when it comes to using LMS in their studies as it is an additional component to which they must acculturate in higher education whilst attempting to rectify their skills deficiencies. For faculty teaching developmental students, this can raise the question of whether it is important to acclimate students to the technology they will be called upon to use in the 21st century classroom or whether the sole focus should be remediating students' lacking academic skills. This qualitative, interpretivist, constructivist-activist/pragmatic study uses interviews with urban community college professors who use or reject the college's LMS (i.e. CANVAS) to varying extents in their classrooms, non-participant observations of the course components those professors who use CANVAS post online, and course artifacts to examine and reflect upon professors' experiences with employing or eschewing such technology with their students.

The study was designed as a case study focusing on one MAUCC department. Adjunct faculty members constitute a growing percentage of the teaching force in higher education institutions--particularly in community colleges (Eagan, 2007; National Center for Educational Statistics, 2011). With rising economic pressure, community colleges increasingly rely on adjunct faculty for teaching their students, particularly in introductory and remedial courses (Eagan, 2007; National Center for Educational Statistics, 2011). However, research suggests that, relative to students taught by full-time faculty, students in introductory courses that are taught by adjunct faculty members are less likely to be successful and to persist to degree completion (Harrington & Schibik, 2001; Eagan, 2009; Jaeger, 2009). Some research suggests that adjunct faculty's work conditions interfere with the quality of their instruction (Eagan, 2007; Lei, 2008). Other research concludes that adjunct faculty members' motivation for teaching and/or method of teaching is incompatible with the investment required for supporting community college students in developmental courses (Adamowicz, 2007; Glenn, 2008). However, little is known about the way contemporary community college adjunct faculty members perceive their role in the organization and their responsibility for promoting students' learning, development, and academic success. The completed research answers the questions: (1) How do adjunct faculty members teaching developmental courses in a community college describe their satisfaction within their current organizational roles? (2) How do adjunct faculty members teaching developmental courses in a community college perceive their responsibility toward student learning and academic success? (3) How do adjunct faculty members describe their motivation within their current role? and (4) How do these adjunct faculty members' perceptions of satisfaction, instructional effectiveness, and motivation relate to their personal background? The research is designed as a case study and focuses on adjunct faculty members teaching introductory and developmental English at one community college.

Even the most experienced teachers can find this diversity demanding.Faculty developers at many two-year colleges still rely solely on the one-day workshop model that, while useful, rarely results in sustained student-centered changes in pedagogy or the curriculum, and may not be practicable for the growing cohort of part-time faculty members.By linking work in the classroom with scholarship and reflection, FLCs provide participants with a sense of renewed engagement and stimulate collegial exploration of ways to achieve educational excellence. FLCs are usually faculty-instigated and cross-disciplinary, and comprise groups of six to fifteen faculty that work collaboratively through regular meetings over an extended period of time to promote research and an exchange of experiences, foster community, and develop the scholarship of teaching. FLCs alleviate burnout and isolation, promote the development, testing, and peer review of new classroom strategies or technologies, and lead to the reenergizing and professionalization of teachers.This book introduces the reader to FLCs and to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, offering examples of application in two-year colleges. Individual chapters describe, among others, an FLC set up to support course redesign; an “Adjunct Connectivity FLC” to integrate part-time faculty within a department and collaborate on the curriculum; a cross-disciplinary FLC to promote student self-regulated learning, and improve academic performance and persistence; a critical thinking FLC that sought to define critical thinking in separate disciplines, examine interdisciplinary cross-over of critical thinking, and measure critical thinking more accurately; an FLC that researched the transfer of learning and developed strategies to promote students’ application of their learning across courses and beyond the classroom. Each chapter describes the formation of its FLC, the processes it engaged in, what worked and did not, and the outcomes achieved.Just as when college faculty fail to remain current in their fields, the failure to engage in continuing development of teaching skills, will equally lead teaching and learning to suffer. It is imperative for faculty members to be adept with using the institution's learning management system to maintain their instructional materials and teach using a technological system. Consequentially, higher education institutions are frequently upgrading or transitioning to a new learning management system to keep pace with technology and to rival other institutions. Unfortunately, in some instances, when a new learning management system is adopted, the institution's training practices for faculty members are neglected, and they are insufficiently prepared to operate the new learning management system. The purpose of this study was to examine the learning experiences of faculty at a state technical college who were required to participate in a new technology adoption of the Blackboard Learning Management System. Two research questions guided this study were: (1) What were the common learning experiences of faculty participating in the adoption of a new learning management system? and (2) How did the participating faculty navigate the requirement to learn or adapt to a new system? This qualitative case study consisted of eight participants: three full-time faculty members and five adjunct faculty members from different schools within a state technical college. The age range of participants was from 36 to 55, and all of the participants were women. The data corpus consisted of semi-structured interviews, document reviews, and observational memos. Four themes emerged from this study where participants perceived that: (a) Training occurred without stakeholders input, (b) Training was informative and burdensome to participants, (c) Participants underutilized training sessions, and (d) Participants designed their own learning experiences. There were also two conclusions drawn from this study: (1) The common learning experiences of the group were frustrating and did not sufficiently fulfill the needs of the participants and (2) Faculty navigated the requirement to learn a new system by using their prior knowledge as educators to create a process of self-directed, collaborative learning approaches, and looked beyond the management system that was assigned to examine similar systems that more directly served their needs.

Book excerpt: This is a phenomenological research study about a college that is changing course management systems for online courses and the experiences that the full-time faculty go through during the transition from one course management system (cms) to another. The reason this method was chosen was to capture the experiences of the faculty and gain an understanding of the phenomena they experience. Colleges are seeing a student enrollment shift away from the traditional classroom toward the online environment. In 2008 there was a 17% increase in online enrollments, accounting for 4.6 million online students. Total enrollments were only up 1.2% (Allen & Seaman, 2010). This demand in online learning means colleges have to offer more online courses, train more faculty, and support the technological requirements of online learning. Many colleges purchase a course management system to support their online courses. The cms provides a consistent format and look for the faculty and the students while also providing instructional tools such as discussion boards, testing, assignment drop boxes, and grade books. When a college changes the course management system then faculty must learn a new system and transition their courses into the new online software. The research question was: What are the experiences of online faculty as they transition from one course management system to another? Sixteen interviews were conducted with full-time faculty and from the interviews, three themes emerged. The themes related to training, technology, and workload. The essence of the study was that this transition was an emotional change process for faculty. From the results of the study a process chart is developed and the recommendations include methods to reduce the emotional impact on faculty members. Currently, there is little research about the effects of changing course management systems. More studies need to be done both with faculty and students. Other future research topics could include a cost study to determine the overall cost including both direct and indirect costs. Another angle would be to research the companies who provide the course management systems and learn what they do to meet the needs of the schools they support.
