Book excerpt: This work has successfully managed to order a vast and amorphous body of literary activity into one volume. The book marked a stage in the development of literary consciousness even more deeply than preceding works by Abdul Latif and Ram Babu Saxena. Taking a historical view, the study regards the formative Deccan period as most creditable both for the natural bent of the language and the natural inclination of the poets. The author regards the pure, indigenous Urdubetter than the Persianised Urdu. The literary history ends with a notice on Mohammad Iqbal. The Progressive Writers Movement was yet to be launched, and the author was standing at a cusp. From this vantage, he provided us with a useful summary of the past, and gave a context to unfolding trends inliterature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The poets represented in this collection have made a major contribution to the development of Urdu poetry during this century. In their hands it has been transformed from a literature of philosophy and psychology to one that has given a voice to the suppressed anger of the Urdu-speaking people. Those poets with the most influence, both popular and literary, include Faiz, who used the structure of the gazal, or love lyric, for his own political ends; Rashed, whose free verse represented a break with tradition; Akhtar-ul-Iman, who used an everyday style to address innovative topics; and Sardar J'afri, the intellectual and radical poet who brought a revolutionary fervour to his work. These and other poets, some of them women, document the prevailing moods of twentieth-century India, sometimes at the risk of imprisonment. From the optimism of the forties after the separation of Pakistan, they trace the consequent disappointment of the fifties when the problems remained unsolved. Then comes the scepticism of the sixties and the subsequent introversion that has led to greater artistry. This selection of their work imparts the flavour of life in the sub-continent and attempts to convey the beauty and lyricism of the Urdu original." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most oft-quoted poets of the nineteenth century, Ghalib was an intellectual colossus, whose poetry is imbued with timelessness and universality. Born and brought up in North India, he wrote both in his mother tongue, Urdu, and in Persian, the established and privileged language of literature and officialdom. He wrote exquisite prose, but is better known for his poetry, particularly his Urdu ghazals. In The Evolution of Ghalib, the author, Hasan Abdullah, provides a detailed introduction that describes Ghalib's life history and brings out his persona, and situates his work in time and space. He briefly discusses the Urdu language and ghazal as a literary form and familiarizes the reader with the words, symbols and concepts crucial for understanding Ghalib's poetry. Based on a chronological reading of Ghalib's Urdu ghazals, the author identifies the different stages and phases of the poet's development and from each of these phases, selects and interprets verses, including those that differ from the dominant trend, in order to reveal Ghalib's intellectual evolution. The book aims to make reading and understanding of Ghalib's Urdu ghazals a pleasurable and enlightening experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emergence of Urdu as a literary and Poetic language in the 18th century, highlighting its engagement with diverse regional cultures and communities in South Asia. Revisiting the Origins of Urdu Poetry reframes the history of Urdu within the diverse contexts from which it emerged. It places the earliest Urdu poets and their craft in the lively social gatherings, bazaars, shrines, and courts of 18th century South Asia. Through aesthetic analysis and historical contextualization of poems, using primary sources in manuscripts, the authors reveal why everyday vernaculars, multi-lingual puns, alongside the use of courtly Persian and complex metaphors attracted a wide audience for this new literary language. Dhawan and Pauwels re-examine the long-dominant mischaracterization of Urdu as an elite language of South Asian Muslims by analysing the poetic biographies of Vali Dakhani and his contemporaries Fa'iz, Abru and Hatim. The authors reveal how selective attention to a handful of poets and rarefied courtly texts obscured the much more diverse roots of an important vernacular tradition, thereby reconstructing a lost literary network of speakers, poets and participants in Urdu's past.
