Book excerpt: The objective of this project is to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of fiber reinforced (FRP) composite wraps in preventing corrosion of reinforced concrete elements in severe environments. The experimental program was established to help determine if FRP wraps provide barriers against the transportation of chlorides into the concrete, or if impermeable wraps trap chlorides and moisture beneath the wrap and thereby accelerate the corrosion process. The focus of this report is on performance of 43 specimens that were removed from exposure testing 5-7 years. The specimens represent typical rectangular (beam) and cylindrical (column) elements in reinforced concrete bridges. Partially wrapped versus unwrapped elements were studied. Other parameters of interest in design and construction included: cast-in chlorides to represent specimens already exposed to a corrosive environment prior to wrapping, cracked versus uncracked elements, addition of corrosion inhibitors, and materials of repair for damage to concrete due to corrosion or the construction traffic prior to wrapping. Guidelines for use of these materials are developed using the results of the test program.

Book excerpt: The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. Book excerpt: Use of concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) tubes (CFFT) for columns and piles has been studied extensively over the last decade. The focus, however, has been exclusively on the monotonic behavior of CFFT. An issue that has received little attention is the implications of using CFFT in seismic regions. Survey of damaged structures in recent earthquakes indicates that catastrophic failure of an entire structure may result from failure of few columns in a chain action. Since it may not be economical to design columns to respond to earthquake loads in their elastic range, dissipation of energy by post-elastic deformation is desired. Although, FRP materials are known for their linear elastic behavior, some FRP systems may exhibit non-linearity due to their laminate architecture and inter-laminar shear. Also, confinement of concrete core in CFFT improves its ductility. This study was carried out to evaluate the cyclic behavior of CFFT beam-columns, and determine whether non-linearity of FRP or confinement of concrete can provide seismic performance comparable to reinforced concrete (RC) columns or concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST). The experimental work consisted of cyclic loading and unloading of FRP-wrapped concrete cylinders and FRP coupons, and reverse cyclic loading of CFFT beam-columns under constant axial load. Some measures of hysteretic performance, including cumulative energy dissipation, ductility and pinching effect were used to evaluate the cyclic response of tested CFFT beam-columns. The study resulted in a cyclic model for FRP-confined concrete in compression, and cyclic models for linear and non-linear FRP materials in tension and compression. A fiber element model was employed to predict the cyclic behavior of CFFT beam-columns. A parametric study was carried out on the cyclic behavior of CFFT beam-columns, and to compare the hysteretic response of CFFT beam-columns with those of RC and CFST members. The two types of CFFT beam-columns tested.

Book excerpt: "Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) jacketing of Reinforced Concrete (RC) columns, as a rapidly growing strengthening technique, requires appropriate design methods. However, the current available design guides are based on models, in their majority semi-empirical, and calibrated with small-scale plain concrete specimens. These models might not be reliable in predicting the strength and ductility enhancement sought through FRP-confinement in RC columns with geometric and material properties as found in practice. This dissertation presents the research conducted in three technical papers. In the first paper, the performance of 22 FRP-wrapped RC columns of medium- and large-scale is studied. The results of the experimental campaign were used to develop and evaluate an analytical method to determine the confining pressure and compressive capacity in a non-circular column ... A second paper is devoted to the review of state-of-the-art design methodologies available for the case of FRP-confined RC columns, and their ability to predict the increment of compressive strength and ductility ... a third paper address the subject of FRP-confined RC columns subjected to combined axial load and bending moment"--Abstract, leaf iv

Book excerpt: The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings. The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles. In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers: * An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design * The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars * Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members * The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process

Book excerpt: The common practice of applying deicing salts on highway bridges increases the potential of reinforcing steel in these structures to experience extensive corrosion in the decks as well as the substructure. A new rehabilitation method which is believed to arrest the corrosion, restore structural integrity, extend the life, and provide interim safety until replacement at a later time is FRP jacketing. In line with this concept, all the columns of the Highland Drive Bridge at I-80 in Salt Lake City were rehabilitated with carbon FRP composites in June 2000. The present project will evaluate the performance of the carbon FRP composite for two of these columns and its ability to maintain a good bond to the concrete, thus restoring and maintaining the column's capacity after exposure to field conditions for eight years. In addition, the use of a GFRP spiral as a non-corroding column tie will be examined.

Book excerpt: Although the short-term performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns wrapped with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials has been widely studied, research studies on the long-term performance are limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of various environmental conditions on the long-term behavior of RC columns wrapped with FRP sheets. The experimental program comprised two parts - ambient environmental effect tests and corrosion tests. The environmental conditions considered in the ambient environmental tests included (1) freeze-thaw cycles, (2) high-temperature cycles, (3) high-humidity cycles, (4) ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and (5) saline solution; while the corrosion tests dealt with the corrosion of steel reinforcement embedded in RC columns wrapped with FRP sheets. RC columns were wrapped with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets and conditioned under the environmental conditions listed. After the environmental conditioning, uni-axial compression tests were conducted in order to evaluate the effects on the mechanical properties, such as column capacity, stiffness, and ductility.

Book excerpt: Advances in Organic Farming: Agronomic Soil Management Practices focuses on the integrated interactions between soil-plant-microbe-environment elements in a functioning ecosystem. It explains sustainable nutrient management under organic farming and agriculture, with chapters focusing on the role of nutrient management in sustaining global ecosystems, the remediation of polluted soils, conservation practices, degradation of pollutants, biofertilizers and biopesticides, critical biogeochemical cycles, potential responses for current and impending environmental change, and other critical factors. Organic farming is both challenging and exciting, as its practice of “feeding the soil, not the plant provides opportunity to better understand why some growing methods are preferred over others. In the simplest terms, organic growing is based on maintaining a living soil with a diverse population of micro and macro soil organisms. Organic matter (OM) is maintained in the soil through the addition of compost, animal manure, green manures and the avoidance of excess mechanization. Presents a comprehensive overview of recent advances and new developments in the field OF research within a relevant theoretical framework Highlights the scope of the inexpensive and improved management practices Focuses on the role of nutrient management in sustaining the ecosystems
