Book excerpt: A fast and reasonably accurate perception of the environment is essential for successful navigation of an autonomous agent. Although many modes of sensing are applicable to this task and have been used, vision remains the most appealing due to its passive nature, good range, and resolution. Most vision techniques to recover depth for navigation use stereo. In the last few years, researchers have started studying techniques to combine stereo with the motion of the camera. Skifstad's dissertation proposes a new approach to recover depth information using known camera motion. This approach results in a robust technique for fast estimation of distances to objects in an image using only one translating camera. A very interesting aspect of the approach pursued by Skifstad is the method used to bypass the most difficult and computationally expensive step in using stereo or similar approaches for the vision-based depth esti mation. The correspondence problem has been the focus of research in most stereo approaches. Skifstad trades the correspondence problem for the known translational motion by using the fact that it is easier to detect single pixel disparities in a sequence of images rather than arbitrary disparities after two frames. A very attractive feature of this approach is that the computations required to detect single pixel disparities are local and hence can be easily parallelized. Another useful feature of the approach, particularly in naviga tion applications, is that the closer objects are detected earlier.

Book excerpt: This monograph is an outgrowth of the authors' recent research on the de velopment of algorithms for several low-level vision problems using artificial neural networks. Specific problems considered are static and motion stereo, computation of optical flow, and deblurring an image. From a mathematical point of view, these inverse problems are ill-posed according to Hadamard. Researchers in computer vision have taken the "regularization" approach to these problems, where one comes up with an appropriate energy or cost function and finds a minimum. Additional constraints such as smoothness, integrability of surfaces, and preservation of discontinuities are added to the cost function explicitly or implicitly. Depending on the nature of the inver sion to be performed and the constraints, the cost function could exhibit several minima. Optimization of such nonconvex functions can be quite involved. Although progress has been made in making techniques such as simulated annealing computationally more reasonable, it is our view that one can often find satisfactory solutions using deterministic optimization algorithms.

The idea here is to use the parallax error to our advantage. A single scene is recorded from two different viewing angles, and depth is estimated from the measure of parallax error. This field has made a lot of researchers and mathematicians to devise novel algorithms for the accurate output of the stereo systems. This system is particularly useful in the field of robotics. It provides them with the 3D understanding of the scene by giving them estimated object depths. This chapter, along with a complete overview of the stereo system, talks about the efficient estimation of the depth of the object. It stresses on the fact that if coupled with other perception techniques, stereo depth estimation can be made a lot more efficient than the current techniques. The idea revolves around the fact that stereo depth estimation is not necessary for all the pixels of the image. This fact opens room for more complex and accurate depth estimation techniques for the fewer regions of interest in the image scene. One of the most important techniques in this field is depth extraction. In this thesis, we first introduce a well-known stereo matching method using color segmentation and belief propagation, and make an implementation of this framework. The color-segmentation based stereo matching method performs well recently, since this method can keep the object boundaries accurate, which is very important to depth map. Based on the implemented framework of segmentation based stereo matching, we proposed a color segmentation based 2D-to-3D video conversion method using high quality motion information. In our proposed scheme, the original depth map is generated from motion parallax by optical flow calculation. After that we employ color segmentation and plane estimation to optimize the original depth map to get an improved depth map with sharp object boundaries. We also make some adjustments for optical flow calculation to improve its efficiency and accuracy. By using the motion vectors extracted from compressed video as initial values for optical flow calculation, the calculated motion vectors are more accurate within a shorter time compared with the same process without initial values. The experimental results shows that our proposed method indeed gives much more accurate depth maps with high quality edge information. Optical flow with initial values provides good original depth map, and color segmentation with plane estimation further improves the depth map by sharpening its boundaries.
