Many Poles--those displaced to work camps in Germany, those in German concentration and P.O.W. camps, and those still in Poland made the decision to immigrate to the United States. Their journey, however, would not be easy. The rigors of the war had affected America as well, and immigration laws were strict. Fortunately, many Polish refugees received help from the Polish American Immigration and Relief Committee (PAIRC). Founded in 1947 to help Polish citizens displaced by World War II, the committee continued its work as the postwar period became the Cold War era and Poles continued to flee the communist regime. This study of the PAIRC and its work includes both the broad history of the committee and stories of specific individuals, which add detail and lend insight into the plight of the refugees and the importance of the advocacy that the committee provided. Drawing on information from committee archives and firsthand consultations with prominent members, this book covers such topics as American immigration law, aid for the Polish Republic, and the effect of political change in Poland itself. It also discusses how the downfall of the communist government transformed Poland into a country that opened its own arms to the world's refugees.

Book excerpt: With over seventeen million refugees inhabiting the globe today, this book addresses this dramatic 20th century phenomenon and several of the issues it raises. Gorman examines how refugee situations arise and the way in which they are addressed by the various global actors: governments, U.N. agencies, and private voluntary organizations. He argues that the entire refugee situation-the provisions of aid, the search for durable solutions, and the resolution of conflicts-involves complex interactions between political and humanitarian causes. Drawing upon his own personal experience in the refugee assistance field, the author explores the various actors, their interactions, refugee emergencies, refugee protection, issues surrounding refugee repatriation, local settlement, and third country resettlement. Gorman pays special attention to refugee policies of the U.S. government, which have dominated the refugee assistance network since World War II. The book, however, is much more than a systematic analysis of contemporary refugee affairs; by referring to great literature, history, and political philosophy, it illustrates how the problem of exile has been a timeless element of the human condition. Combining classical scholarship, international policy analysis, and compelling human interest stories, it offers one of the most comprehensive and unique treatments of the politics of refugee affairs and humanitarian assistance to war-torn regions of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a diverse literature that underscores America's growing racial hostility and violence, York defines and explores the claims of cross-cultural training as an aid to increasing personal satisfaction and professional productivity in culturally diverse work environments. York claims that soaring failure rates among cross-cultural workers, particularly teachers, business personnel, and missionaries, are the result of inadequate, poorly administered, or inappropriate cross-cultural training. Examining more than 500 studies of cross-cultural training programs in more than a dozen occupations, York compares training given to Peace Corps and diplomatic corps members, teachers, doctors, and others who work in culturally diverse environments. In an analysis of these programs, she determines whether differences in policies, goals, selection procedures, lengths of training time, age or race of trainees, training location, or other factors contribute to long-term effectiveness of the programs.
