Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the transition to private practice experiences of recently graduated dental hygienists (DHs) from a dental hygiene program. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was taken to understand the lived experiences of six study participants as they progressed from novice students to competent clinicians. Participants were invited to submit personal journals that expressed their experiences throughout the first six months of practice. These graduates also participated in individual semi-structured interviews in order to elaborate on their transition experiences discussed in their journals. Four key themes emerged from the data collected regarding the importance of: a support system or mentor; a workplace practicum; developing program curriculum to enhance graduate transition; self-assessment and self-directed learning in the development of competence. Informed by this data, several recommendations are made to private practice employers and Dental Hygiene Program faculty to facilitate the process of transitioning future graduates to practice. On this basis, further research should be undertaken to expand on the findings of this study.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenology was to explore the experiences of dentists and dental hygienists who transitioned from clinical practice to the role of clinical instructor at Southern University. The theory of andragogy was used to guide this study because it provided a framework for training clinical instructors as adult learners. This study focused on the central research question, "What are the experiences of dentists and dental hygienists who have transitioned from clinical practice to the role of clinical instructors?" A transcendental phenomenological study approach was used to provide a deeper understanding of participants' experiences and their thought processes as they transitioned from clinical practitioners to their roles as clinical instructors. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit dentists and dental hygienists who served as clinical instructors in a dental hygiene program at a midwestern public university. Data collection was triangulated using individual interviews, photograph journals, and a virtual focus group. Data analysis was conducted using epoché, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variance, and synthesis of the structural and textural descriptions gathered during data collection. The researcher uncovered five themes from the data collection: life responsibilities, challenges faced, training received, training needed, and training delivery preferences. These themes helped to create an understanding of the phenomena of transitioning from clinical practitioner to clinical instructor as the participants experienced it. The study's findings demonstrated the need to train dentists and dental hygienists to become clinical instructors. Keywords: dental hygiene, clinical instructor, adult learning theory, professional development

Book excerpt: This qualitative transcendental phenomenological study describes the lived experiences of clinical dental hygienists transitioning from clinical practitioners to dental hygiene educators. The theory guiding this study is Schlossberg’s (1981, 2011) transition theory as it relates to career transition. The focus of this study was based upon the central research question, “How do clinical dental hygienists describe their transition into dental hygiene education?” Educators reflected on the essence of their transition, including preparational methods, pedagogical practices, orientation, mentoring programs utilized during their transition, and staff development since becoming dental hygiene educators. This study took place in the School of Health Sciences at Cobb County Community College, located in the central piedmont region of North Carolina. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit dental hygiene educators with a minimum of two years of clinical experience and a minimum of six months in a teaching role who practice in the state of North Carolina. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews using open-ended questions, virtual focus groups, and a hypothetical letter from participants to dental hygienists considering transitioning from clinical dental hygiene explaining their lived experiences. Data were analyzed to determine emerging themes that explored the essence of the phenomenon. This qualitative transcendental phenomenological study sought to describe the lived experiences of clinical dental hygienists transitioning from clinical practitioners to dental hygiene educators. Themes resulting from data analysis include motivational factors, preparatory process, instructor learning needs and processes, and educational methodology development.
